Point Leader Davey J Nails First MACS Win of the Year at Brushcreek.

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
May 1, 2004
By: Jeff Geesey

Davey Johnson, Greensburg, PA, snared round three of Mid-Atlantic Championship Series taking the $5,000 to-win, Bob Malcom Dodge/Chrysler Jeep 50 at Brushcreek Motorsports, Peebles, OH.

Defending MACS Champion, Chuck Harper, and R.J. Conley paced the 24-car starting field trackside for the

50-lap A Main, with eventual winner, Johnson slotted in third. At the start, Conley bolted into the lead looking extremely stout as he was on the prowl in search of his first career MACS A Main marker.

Brushcreek is blistering fast with speeds that are absolutely breath taking. Conley led the first circuit over Harper, Johnson, Tim Dohm, and “Slow Ride” David Scott. Johnson blitzed past Harper for second on lap 2, with Dohm shuffling back to seventh as Keith Barbara, from eighth, popped into the top five.

Johnson was dogging Conley for the lead and on lap eight Johnson and Scott both freight trained past Conley taking the top two spots. As the first caution flew on lap 9, Johnson and Scott occupied the front row on the restart over Conley, Harper and Barbara.

Several more cautions slowed the early going but the action was none the less intense. By lap 15, Barbara had vaulted into second no chasing down the leader. Two laps later, Barbara, the 2003 WRISCO Aluminum MACS ROY overhauled Johnson and was out in front closely followed by Johnson, Scott, Conley and Jackie Boggs.

At the half-way point, Barbara waded into the tail of the field trying to shake the tenacious Johnson. Lap after lap Johnson patiently and methodically calculated the leaders every move waiting and watching for Barbara to slip.

While the leaders were fighting it out, Steve Shaver moved into fifth. By lap 30, the top five included the leader, Barbara, Johnson, Scott, Shaver and Robbie Blair from twelfth. Johnson was playing cat and mouse and on lap 35 leaped past Barbara and into the lead.

Two laps later, Johnson reentered lapped traffic trying to dispatch his challengers. On lap 42, Scott overtook Barbara, who popped a tire and exited to the pits for quick service. The revise top three included Johnson, Scott, Blair, Shaver and Jim Bernheisel, from 13th.

On the restart, Scott tried every trick in the repertoire trying to dethrone the leader, Johnson. With the white flag flying, Scott dove to the inside of Johnson, catching the inside berm crossing up the contender sending him careening towards the wall side ways. The yellow was quickly displayed, as the incident caused Scott to nock a tire down. Also pitting for quick tire service for flats were Ryan Markham and Jim Bernheisel.

After the field was realigned, Johnson now was challenged by Blair, Shaver, Barbara, who had rallied from the rear on lap 42, and “Hot Rod” Rod Conley. Series rules dictated a green, white, checkered finish as Johnson roared off at the cone. Blair smelling victory quickly darted after the leader. Coming to the checkers, Johnson took the victory over Blair, Barbara, Shaver, and Conley. Scott railed for sixth over Markham, Bernheisle, Paul Wilmoth, and Ty Meyers, the WRISCO Aluminum Rookie of the Race.

Miller Scores Big in MACS BB&T Challenge Series Victory at VMS

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
April 17, 2004
By: Jeff Geesey

Jeremy Miller, Gettysburg, PA, scored a big $10,000 victory in the opening round of the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series sanctioned, BB&T Challenge Series presented by Sunbelt Equipment Rentals at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, Saluda, VA.

Miller and local standout, Booper Bare, paced the 26-car starting field trackside for the 50-lap main event. At the start, Miller blazed into the lead looking to notch his second career Series maker, as well as win, for the second year in a row, the opening stanza of the BB&T Challenge Series. Bare quickly tucked in behind the fleet Miller followed by Randal Chupp, Chuck Finch, and Darryl Hills, in one of this driver’s strongest Series effort to date.

By lap 5, Davey Johnson, had clawed his way from tenth to fifth and was on a rail after the leader. Lap 13, saw the most significant incident of the event occur, as Denny Chamberlain, former two-time Series Champion, was racing for position with sixteenth starting, Jim Bernheisel. The duo made significant contact kerning Chamberlain into the front straight away wall, swiping off the complete right front of the car to the frame rails.

On the restart, Miller was still on point, over Bare, Chupp, Johnson and Finch. Johnson continued his march to the front and by lap 16 had moved into third as Bare was challenging the leader. Johnson reeled in the lead pair quickly and on lap 26 took the runner-up spot from Bare and set his guys on the lead.

The final restart came on lap 34, regrouping all the contenders behind Miller. Johnson had another close range shot at the lead but had to maintain his ground against Bare, Chupp, and Bernheisel. Miller, smooth as glass, accelerated at the cone, but Johnson wasn’t going to have the leader slip from his clutches.

The lead pair raced each other hard for the victory as Johnson was working his American Racers hard trying to gain the upper hand from Miller. Lap after lap, Johnson was trying every available trick in his bag to wrestle the lead from Miller. Miller stood his ground and gave no quarter as the two set a blistering pace.

With five laps top go, Johnson’s hopes were starting to fade as Miller was opening a slight advantage. Miller went on to claim a .335 second margin of victory over Johnson, Bare, Chupp, and Bernheisel. Greg Roberson led the next group of five over Kenny Pettyjohn, from fourteenth; Hills; Paul Wilmoth, from eleventh; and Robbie Blair, from thirteenth.

“Great Scott” David Scott Nails Stellar Field at Potomac MACS Opener

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
April 16, 2004
By: Jeff Geesey

Sixteen year veteran, David Scott, Garland, PA, nailed a stellar field in the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series lid lifter at Rick and Ernie Jones’ Potomac Speedway, Budds Creek, MD. David, 33, thrilled the hearty, chilled crowd by dominating every event he was in throughout the entire evening. He claimed well over $5,000 for his efforts.

By virtue of winning the Wild Side Trailer presented, Malcuit Racing Engines Dash King event, Scott, sat on the pole and was flanked by Paul Wilmoth pacing the 24-car field for the start of the 50-lap A Main.

As the green waved, Scott bolted into the lead only to have the start thwarted by a lazy spin by Kirk Ryan in turn four before the completion of lap one. On the restart, Scott again flexed his muscle catapulting into the lead. Robbie Blair, from his third place start, blew past Wilmoth into second, relegating him to third over Bob Close, from seventh and Randall Chupp from eighth. This type of breath taking action was occurring all over the track as lap one was completed.

Close breezed past Blair into second on lap five with Wilmoth still clinging to third now over Blair, Davey Johnson, from tenth, and Jeep Van Wormer. By lap 14, Scott was stretching out his lead slightly as the intense battle for position was fast and furious. The high banked, multi-groove surface was providing torrid skirmishes throughout as Blair knocked off Close regaining the runner-up spot. Johnson stealthy eyeing second by was fending off the stiff challenges of Chupp.

At half-way, Scott was starting to catch the tail of the field as the high flying Garland pilot was operating flawlessly. With Chupp’s sudden and unexpected departure from the event, Jim Bernheisel, who started fourteenth, was now holding down the fifth position. Scott was hoping to be able to sneak away from the field as tried to use lapped cars to reach that objective. However, his host of contenders would have nothing of that strategy. Blair, Close, Johnson, and Bernheisel were not only matching each others moves keeping them in check, but keeping Scott within striking distance.

With five laps to go, Scott held a slim margin over Blair, Close, Johnson and now Jeremy Miller, working his way from his eleventh place start into the top five. With 18 of the original 24 competitors still in action, the intensity level was still at a fever pitch.

As the checkers waved, Scott notched his third career Series victory over Blair, Close, Johnson, and Miller. The next tier of five drivers included Bernheisel, Booper Bare, Van Wormer, Wilmoth, and Kenny Pettyjohn.

The Calico Coatings (NC) “Hard Charger” was Bo Feathers. He received a $75.00 gift certificate from Calico for his efforts plus $200 from Sean Cosgrove and Drywall Systems. Scott added to his bounty as he received a $125.00 gift certificate from Calico. Calico also awarded Jerry Foster and Dan Stone, the first non-transfers from the twin B Mains $50.00 gift certificates. ATL Fuel Cells (NJ) is providing a $50.00 gift certificate to the winner, Scott, as well as a $100 gift certificate to the fiat B main winner Rod Conley. Design 500 (WA) awarded a $50.00 gift certificate to Miller for finishing fifth in the A Main as well as $100 gift certificate to Stone as the first non-transfer in the second B main. Frankland Racing Supplies provided a $50.00 gift certificate to Petty John for his tenth place finish in the A Main. Mason Racing provided a $50.00 gift certificate fro the winner Scott. Outerwears Prefilters provided a $50.00 to Darryl Hills Winner of the second B main.

$77,000 Awaits WRISCO Aluminum MACS ROY Candidates for Series Opening Weekend

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
April 11, 2004
By: Jeff Geesey

With nearly $77,000 on the line for the opening weekend of the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series, the anticipation level has risen dramatically with just a few days remaining before the kick-off of the 1.4 Million dollar season.

Drivers are starting to make their commitments known, as three drivers, Mike Christopher (DE), Scott Cross (MD), and Robbie Scott (WV), have all indicated their dedication to participate in the WRISCO Aluminum MACS ROY program. Several other drivers have also shown their interest in competing for the ROY crown, but at this point, have not submitted the appropriate applications. The deadline for ROY title driver declaration is Saturday, May 1, which coincidentally is the Series third event at Brushcreek Motorsports, Peebles, OH.

Christopher, 37, from Ellendale, DE, has been chauffeuring Late Models for thirteen seasons. Mike’s first career victory came in ’92 at the Camp Barnes Benefit event at Delaware International Speedway. Since then he has gained seven more A Main markers. He currently pilots a BRC, Lazer III Grand Prix powered by both 415 and 430 Draime as well as Dyno-Tech Chevrolet’s, with AFCO Shocks and American Racer tires on board. Mike and his wife Donna are owner/operators of the team and fully sponsor their own effort.

Cross, 41, calls Centreville, MD home and has been piloting dirt Late Models for the past fifteen years. He is former track champion at Potomac Speedway (MD) during the ’95 & ’96 campaigns. Additionally, he has several important wins under his belt including the ’95 Hoosier Race of Champions, ’01 Vern Harris Memorial both at Potomac as well as the ’95 version of the Fall Classic, now annual held at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. He drives a DIRTEK Grand Prix with power from a 430 Advanced Racing Engines Chevrolet clad with PRO shocks and Hoosier Tires. His boosters are Advanced Racing Engines, Security Remodeling, Ask About Doors, and Jay Dee’s Supply.

Scott, 28, hails from Shinnston, WV. This twelve year veteran has a long list of accomplishment to his credit. During the ’94 season he copped the Elkins Motor Speedway Late Model Rookie of the Year title. That was the catalyst for Robbie to start exerting his dominance at the Elkins oval. Just five short seasons later (’99) he claimed his first of four track Late Model Championships at Elkins including this past season (’01-‘03) as well as claiming the 2001 WV State Championship there. Accompanying all of his Championships seasons are 23 feature wins. Robbie pilots an Intrepid Rocket with a 410 Cressap MOPAR shod with AFCO Shocks and Hoosiers Tires. His sponsors include Rocket Chassis, Banshee Graphics, G&G Garage, and Amos Paving.

Adding to the list of drivers traveling with the Series this season are: defending champion, Chuck Harper, Beverly, WV, as he returns to defend his crown leading the MACS contingent south for the opener, Friday, April 16, at Rick Jones’, Potomac Speedway, Budds Creek, MD. This event will be a 50-lap, $5,000 to-win show with a total purse of $26,275.

At Harper’s side will be ’03 MACS ROY, Keith Barbara (PA); “Hot Rod” Rodney Phillips (PA); two-time MACS Champion, Denny Chamberlain (WV), Flyin’ Ryan Markham (OH); Rod Conley (OH); and David “Slow Ride” Scott (PA);

Also anticipated to be in attendance are Booper Bare (VA); Jackie Boggs (KY); Lance Elson (WV); Les Hare (PA); Mike Johnson (PA); and Jeremy Miller (PA), piloting Charles Bucker Rocket.

The MACS portion of the show will included AFCO “Shock the Clock” time trails presented by Sue Stevenson Photography; heats; the Malcuit Racing Engines “Dash King” competition presented by Wild Side Trailers; twin B Mains, and 50 lap A Main. The pay-off is stout with seventh place paying $1,000 and with $400 to take the green.

The next night, Saturday, April 17, the Series stops at Bill Sawyer’s, Virginia Motor Speedway, Saluda, VA. This marks the beginning of the four “BB&T Challenge Series” presented by Sun Belt Equipment Rentals at VMS. All four BB&T programs are 50-laps, paying $10,000 to-win from the gigantic $50,000 one-day purse. The purse highlights included fourteenth place paying $1,000 with $700 to start. All drivers failing to qualify will receive $200.00 tow money. The MACS format will be identical to the previous night’s show with the AFCO “Shock the Clock” time trails presented by Sue Stevenson Photography; heats; the Malcuit Racing Engines “Dash King” competition presented by Wild Side Trailers; twin B Mains, and 50 lap A Main.

Additionally, the “BB&T Challenge Series” events provide a tremendous incentive program for the quartet of events. If one driver wins two of the four shows s/he will receive a $10,000 bonus. If someone takes three of four the bonus grows to $35,000, while a clean sweep will net a cool $50,000. One driver could win $90,000 if s/he is able to sweep all four events.

Fans and drivers a like don’t miss one minute of the action at either Potomac Speedway or Virginia Motor Speedway on Friday and Saturday, April 16 & 17 respectively.

MACS Announces Expansion of its two Children Based Programs.

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
March 28, 2004
By: Jeff Geesey

Now in its sixth year since inception, the MACS Junior Racer’s Club (JRC) program will not only continue but expand. The JRC was originally designed to bring attention and focus to young race fans at every night’s race event. “We are aware that many children of all ages attend our racing programs. In order to encourage their continued involvement and interest in the sport, we feel it is our responsibility to make their visit to a race event conducive for the entire family to attend as well as provide entertainment value creating memories that will last a life time”, stated Regina Geesey. Each nightly JRC winner will have the opportunity to visit the MACS feature winner in victory lane and have their picture taken with the winner by Series photographer, Sue Stevenson. Included in the $10.00 membership is a FREE JRC T-shirt in addition to a MACS JRC bulldog temporary tattoo.

Last season, the series began the Checkin’ Out Reading Club in response to the “No Child Left Behind Act of 2001”. “Motivation for the kids’ reading club was derived from my desire to closely tie education into what we do with the Series. As educators at Indiana County Technology Center (ICTC), Indiana, PA, Jeff and I realize the value of a quality education. We understand the worth of being fluent readers and the impact reading has on our daily lives. In working with children, we are aware of the role reading plays in education and the effect that it has on their future. The enthusiasm racing generates is contagious. We hope this alliance of reading and motorsports will prompt kids to increase their time spent reading”, concluded Regina Geesey. The Series created this program for children up to age 16. The program is designed to encourage children and their families to spend time reading regularly to improve reading fluency, decoding skills, vocabulary development, and comprehension.

Each Checkin’ Out Reading Club member has monthly opportunities (January 1 through December 1) to submit their completed form(s) for eligibility to win prizes. The reading form is located on the bottom of the JRC page at the MACS website or at the Wild Side MACS apparel trailer at any of the Series’ events. Kids using “book it” forms in their schools are welcomed to count those same titles and pages toward this program. Interest about this program and its benefits has prompted Dr. Dave and Genny Horne, RPM Racing News co-editors to once again provide 40 books for free distribution to the Checkin’ Out Reading Club members at our events.

Prizes for this year’s Checkin’ Out Reading Club winners include a Gateway Computer compliments of MACS defending champion, Chuck Harper; a DVD Player, child’s bike, Hewlett Packard Desk Jet printer, and Borders gift certificate compliments of Doc and Carol Lehman, Lehman Motorsports Services; Tim Adamson and Alton Swayne have donated $100 through their Jesus Motorsports Outreach organization based at Brushcreek Motorsports, Peebles, OH. Chub Frank and Mike Farr have donated Chub Frank calendars and t-shirts. Proceeds from these items will benefit the kids’ prize and gift packages offered throughout the year.

New this season is an essay contest. As a result of an interview on www.racetalklive.com in February 2004, on Dirt Nation with Doc Lehman, Dave Seay, and Brian Tidball a suggestion was made to institute an essay contest for our young race fans. The conversation was prompted by MACS champion, Chuck Harper’s positive comments regarding last year’s Checkin’ Out Reading grand prize winner, Amanda Darke, Conneaut Lake, PA. She wrote an acceptance letter for prizes she received at the banquet for her reading efforts during the 2003 race season. This acceptance letter touched many in attendance realizing the feats that she had conquered in her personal quest to become a better reader. In collaboration with both an English and Reading teacher at ICTC Regina developed five writing prompts which kids can write to and enter up to five separate essays (age groups 6-9; 10-12; 13-16). Each prompt focuses on an aspect of racing. The contest winners will have their essays released to electronic and print medias. Dave Kitty, RPM Racing News co-editor will contribute a Best Buy gift certificate to a winner.

what they would see, hear, as well as experience from your prospective as a spectator.

3. Writing a narrative essay, giving a detailed explanation of how you became interested in the sport of auto racing. Enlighten the reader
which person(s) initially sparked your interest and how your interest has grown from the first event you attended to now.

4. Write an informative essay, describing your most memorable race event including what impressed you most about a driver, the event, or perhaps the time spent with your family.

5. Write a narrative essay on how sports can provide young people with positive role models. Express in your own words who within racing has impacted you the most in a positive way by steering you to emulate his/her success.

As an added program, Amanda Darke independently designed a book mark which will be distributed free to our Reading Club and JRC members. Her artwork is original and will be featured during this race season. Based upon this idea, we are conducting a contest for kids to create a bookmark. The artwork will be collected this year from our young race fans. Entries can be submitted at the Wild Side MACS apparel trailer at any of the Series’ events or electronically to macs1@verizon.net . The winner’s artwork will be featured at our banquet on January 8, 2005 as well as during the 2005 race season at our events.

As we prepare for the upcoming season we need to keep in mind that these programs are geared to our young people who will be our future columnists, promoters, drivers, car owners, and racing officials. We need to encourage them to get involved and give them every opportunity to prepare for these roles.

Check out the program guidelines on the MACS website at http://www.macsracing.com  or at the Pit Stall at the Wild Side MACS apparel trailer at any of the Series’ events. Also look for the new Weikel’s Racewear designed MACS JRC t-shirt in addition to a new general kid’s t-shirt for the 2004 race season.

Only 20 Days Until MACS Kicks-Off 1.3 Million Dollar Season

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
March 21, 2004
By: Jeff Geesey

With only approximately 20 days left before the kick-off to the eight season of operation for the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series, the posted cash, prizes and awards has topped over 1.3 million dollars.

“We are starting with a Maryland and Virginia weekend this year with the hopes for warmer weather south of the Mason-Dixon, to start our season”, indicated Jeff Geesey, Series P.R. Director.

The brimming schedule starts at Rick Jones’, Potomac Speedway, Budds Creek, MD, on Friday, April 16. This is the first of two appearances by the Series this season and will be the first since October of 1999.

This event will be a 50-lap, $5,000 to-win affair with a total purse of $26,275 being offered. The show will consist of the Sue Stevenson Photography presented, AFCO “Shock the Clock” time trails; heats; the Wild Side Trailers presented Malcuit Racing Engines “Dash King” competition, twin B Mains, and 50 lap A Main. The good news for the competitors is that seventh place pays $1,000 while $400 goes to start.

Gary Stuhler, who resides in second place in all-time Series wins, took home the checkers that brisk fall evening in ’99 out dueling a stout field of 57 drivers from five states. Potomac is a fleet, high-banked, 3/8 mile that provides multiple grooves of racing with action at every corner. The next Series stop this year at Potomac will be on Friday, July 16 for an identical program.

“With nearly $77,000 on the line for the weekend, we have high hope for driver participation and fan attendance. I sure wouldn't want to miss this one, for anything,” indicated Geesey.

The next night, Saturday, April 17, the Series makes the short, one and one-half hour haul to Bill Sawyer's Virginia Motor Speedway, Saluda, VA. This is for the first of four BB&T Challenge Series events.

“Bill and his crack crew, under the leadership of General Manager, Clarke Sawyer, have taken a facility that was in absolute ruin and decay, totally dismantled it down to the ground, which has given rise to the crown jewel of southern dirt late model facilities”, Geesey lamented.

All four BB&T programs are 50-laps, paying $10,000 to-win. The total purse for each of these one-day events weighs in at a whopping $50,000. From a driver or team owners prospective, it is a great purse throughout. Fourteenth place is $1,000 with $700 going to start. That isn’t the only good news however; all drivers that fail to qualify for the A Main will receive $200.00 tow money.

One of the most exciting points of this mini-series, or as some are referring to it as, a Series within a Series is the bonus program,” commented Geesey. “In addition to the $200,000 Bill has posted, he is offering a tremendous bonus program for the quartet of events. If one driver wins two of the four shows he will receive a $10,000 bonus. If someone takes three of four the bonus grows to $35,000, while a clean sweep will net a cool $50,000. That means if one driver can sweep the deal, he will earn $90,000 for his effort. That is a pretty sweet deal, if you ask me,” summarized Geesey.

The last time the Series was at VMS was on June 15, 2002 with Booper Bare narrowly edging out Les Hare by .106 seconds taking the dramatic win. In the previous visits by the Series during the rain plagued ’01 season, Todd Andrews, all-time career feature win leader with the Series, took the checkers and the $12,000 top prize.

“We are excited about returning to this great facility that has few rivals in our sport of short track, dirt racing. Bill and Clarke have extended an open invitation to all the teams, that they will leave the pit gate open at VMS on Friday night after the Potomac show, so that when competitors leave Potomac, they can pull straight to VMS, and park in their pits for the night. That is the type of class, professionalism and hospitality that is exhibited by everyone affiliated with the track,” concluded Geesey.

Another inspiring point of the four race set is that Lehman Motorsports, via Dirt America On line, has agreed to sign on as a sponsor of the FANtastic finale at VMS. One lucky fan could win $25,000. Fans will have their general admission tickets placed in a barrel. One lucky fan will have his or her ticket number drawn after the entire field has been set. They will come to center stage and through a blind draw, two of the numbers in the starting field will be drawn. If those two drivers finish first and second in any order, that fan will win $25,000.

Race fans make sure you don’t miss one minute of the action at either Potomac Speedway or Virginia Motor Speedway on Friday and Saturday, April 16 & 17 respectively.

MACS Adds Additional Date at Portsmouth Raceway Park

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
March 14, 2004
By: Regina Geesey

The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series is pleased to announce the addition of another event to its already brimming schedule. The date is Saturday, September 25 at Tim Coleman’s Portsmouth Raceway Park, Portsmouth, OH.

As a result of a meeting held recently in Portsmouth, promoter, Max Warnock and track owner, Tim Coleman met with Series officials and arrived at the additional date. “We are excited about the opportunity to be at this renowned facility three times this year. As we forged the general concept, as well as the date, we have dedicated time to work out the full details of the event”, explained Series PR Director, Jeff Geesey.

“We are gratified and excited to be working with the Geesey’s and the MACS Series”, commented Warnock. “We feel that they are up and coming and we, at Portsmouth Raceway Park, are eagerly anticipating a great working relationship with them. We see them as having the same values and philosophy as we do relative to quality, family entertainment”, concluded Warnock.

“Tim, Max and Donna plan to establish the total purse, winners share and event naming. We don’t want to keep everyone in too much suspense; however, we don’t envision the full details being available until about mid-summer. Both sides are considering and discussing several options of how the event will be presented. I believe the Series and the brain trust at Portsmouth can make this a huge event at that time of the year”, concluded Geesey.

Make sure to mark your calendar for all dates the MACS Series will be in action at Portsmouth Raceway Park; Saturday, June 5, for a $5,000 to-win, $26,275 event; Saturday and Sunday July 3 & 4 events co-sanctioned with the Boundless World of Outlaw Late Models paying $5,000 to-win the first night and $10,000 to-win the second night; concluding with Saturday, September 25.

MACS April 30 Show at Midway Canceled

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
March 12, 2004
By: Jeff Geesey

The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series is announcing the cancellation of the previously scheduled event for Friday, April 30 at Midway Speedway, Crooksville, OH. The cancellation was a direct result of a phone conversation with owner/promoter Ted Johnson and myself”, indicated Jeff Geesey Series PR Director. “Johnson cited the difficult winter weather conditions, as well as the lack of any signs of an early spring that completely thwarting his effort for several major improvement projects at the Speedway as sole reason for his decision to cancel”.

“We are disappointed, but we completely understand this turn of events. Ted, as one of our former competitors, has always supported the Series when he could, so I am confident that we will have an event there, if not later this year, certainly next. Ted, his wife Marion, as well as Vickie and Toma (Johnson) have put a lot of effort into the track over the last two years, and they want it completely right, including concession stands, parking both in the pits as well as for the spectators, and seating before we arrive. Ted expressed his sincerest desire to make a positive impression on the drivers and fans that come to visit his facility, and he didn’t want them to leave the least disappointed”, concluded Geesey.

At this point, Friday, April 30, is an open date that we will attempt to fill somewhere in Ohio, West Virginia or western Pennsylvania, so the trip the next night, Saturday, May 1, to Brushcreek, will make logistical sense for our teams, fans and us.

Mid-Atlantic Championship Series Adds More Dates to Preliminary Schedule

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
February 23, 2004
By: Jeff Geesey

The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series announces the addition of several shows to their preliminary schedule that was released approximately one month ago. Added to the schedule have been solo events for the Series as well as two co-sanctioned race meets.

Newly added dates include Friday, June 4, which is R.H. Armstrong Memorial at Elkins Motor Speedway, Elkins, WV. This event will be a 50-lap, $5,000 to-win contest with $26,275 in total prize money offered. This is the Series first stop since the new ownership took over Elkins several seasons ago. The MACS Series predecessor, NEWS, was last there in 1996 for the “Thunder in the Mountains” Speedweek.

The next night, Saturday, June 5, the Series travel across the Interstate for its inaugural visit to the Coleman families Portsmouth Raceway Park, Portsmouth, OH. Promoter, Max Warnock contacted the Series about presenting a show at the famed 1/3 mile high bank oval in late January and the details have just been finalized. The program at Portsmouth will be a 50-lap affair paying $5,000 to- win from the $26,275 purse.

Then the first of two co-sanctioned events between the MACS Series and the newly formed Boundless World of Outlaw Late Models Series will be presented at Portsmouth Raceway Park on Saturday and Sunday, July 3 & 4. The full details of the show are still being finalized, but the purse on the first night will be a $5,000 to win program while the July 4th show will pay $10,000 to win. The total purse will top $90,000. Key to the weekend is that points will be awarded both nights for all competitors by each Series. The first nights program will be under the MACS banner with the Series rules, procedures and format in place. Conversely, July 4 will be under WoO format, procedures and rules.

The second co-sanctioned weekend on the MACS schedule will be again co-sanctioned with WoO. This is Charter Communications Race Fest 2004 weekend which this year is Friday and Saturday, October 1 & 2 at the Minnite families’ West Virginia Motor Speedway, Mineral Wells, WV. The purses have yet to be established, but will be released within the next several weeks. Again, just like at Portsmouth, points will be awarded each night to all drivers by both sanctioning organization and the first night will by the MACS format, rules and procedures while night number two will follow the WoO procedures.

Additionally, tentative dates were also added at the Johnson’s Midway Speedway, Crooksville, OH, for Friday, April 30 for a $5,000 to-win show with the final announcement to be forthcoming within the next few weeks. Secondly, Saturday, May 15, Ronnie Moran’s Muskingum County Speedway is considering a $5,000 to-win show.

In related scheduling news, as of Monday, February 16, in a telephone conversation with Ernie Coffman, owner/promoter of the Wayne County Speedway, he officially canceled the MACS Series event for Saturday, July 24.

MACS Debuts New Website

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
February 23, 2004
By: Jeff Geesey

The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series is announcing their new, completely redesigned website at www.macsracing.com. It is now up on the world wide web and available for all our visitors including fans, owners, drivers, media, sponsor’s, and host facilities to visit.

The new site is a product of Cutting Edge owner, Lee Havlik and website designer Florian Seeger. “Our new site officially debuted on Saturday, January 31, 2004", indicated Jeff Geesey Series PR Director. “The fresh new look makes it easier to navigate and less congested giving way to a less busy more user friendly appearance, which is exactly what we wanted”, reiterated Geesey .

Series officials met with Havlik at the Performance Racing Industry show in Indianapolis in early December working out the general specifications for the endeavor. “We appreciate all of Lee and Florian’s work on the site and fully understand it is incomplete and unfinished. We ask everyone for a little patience, as we are confident that they will be rewarded for their perseverance”, commented Geesey.

Geesey interjected, “With the Internet becoming such a valuable tool and resource for racing enthusiasts, we feel the design is professional and crisp. As of now, the basic framework is in place with several other pages still under construction. We made a conscious business decision that it would be better to have an Internet presence, versus not, even though our site wasn’t in it’s final form. This decision was primarily based on that the racing industry, especially at this time, can be so rumor and innuendo driven that we decided it would be in our best interest to have an incomplete site versus none at all”, remarked Geesey.

Havlik remarked, “Florian and I are pleased to be working with the Series in another expanded capacity. Cutting Edge has been a Series supporter for several years through the decal side of our business. As we are expanding our service offerings through website design and development, which is opening more opportunities for us to be involved on a different level with our customers”, concluded, Havlik.

Geesey reassured, “We aren’t done yet, but we are at a comfortable point to announce its readiness for people to visit. We have several major sections including the Rules page that aren’t done; however, we are closing in on them quickly. As of now, we have eight pages still under construction including Junior Racers Club and Checking Out Reading, Advertising, Race Day, Results, Points, Drivers, and Merchandise. They are have been ranked in order of importance and will be completed within the next two-three weeks”, provided Geesey.

“Our new site took a major step forward responding to visitors suggestions and principal among them were requests for more pictures. Those dynamite photographs are provided by Series Photographer, Sue Stevenson. An entire page is devoted to Sue’s superior work as well as being illustrated on the home page throughout the year”, added Geesey.

Visitors should see weekly progress with each of the pages being finished in order of importance, and by April, all of the pages should be complete.

In a related sidebar, the Series new email address is macs1@verizon.net. The former macs@ptd.net address will be deactivated by February 29.

MACS Tweaks A Few Rules And Adds More Driver
Incentive Programs for ‘04

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
February 8, 2004
By: Jeff Geesey

The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series is busy gearing up for the new brimming season by tweaking a few rules as well as adding more driver incentive programs. “The vast majority of our rules and procedures will remain unchanged from 2003, chiefly because we believe consistency is the one of the keys ingredients to longevity”, interjected, Jeff Geesey, Series Public Relations Director.

The first rule argumentation is in regards to fine tuning the point fund distribution system. This year the rules states “...drivers must compete in 80% or more of the events to be eligible for any point fund, contingencies, or additional prize distribution. However, if a driver, that finishes inside the top ten of the final points standings, competes in less than 80% of the shows, s/he will receive the percentage of the prize package based on the number of events that s/he participated in. (i.e. 70% of the shows and the position value is $3000 therefore the driver will receive $2,100)

The second rule amendment involves driver provisionals. Starting in 2004, the number of provisionals will be based on the number of events presented. Drivers will be awarded five (5) provisionals for up to the first 20 events presented. One (1) additional provisional will be awarded for events 21 - 25 plus one (1) more provisional for events 26 - 30. Drivers will not receive any additional provisionals for more than 30 events. Additionally, no driver can use more then five (5) provisionals in the first 20 events as well as drivers are not permitted to use more than two (2) back to back at anytime.

Also for the first time in Series history a minimum point fund is being announced in advance. With the increased involvement of several sponsors including Hoosier Tire, Wrisco Aluminum, Bazell Oil, and Lias Tire Racing Division the Series will pay a minimum of $10,000 to-win the championship based on 20 completed events. Tenth place will be presented with $2,000 again based on 20 completed programs. Once that 20 show minimum is eclipsed, the point fund will continue to grow with more being added to each position throughout the top ten for each show over 20.

Several new award programs have been instituted as well as some title sponsorship changes have occurred. First, Wrisco Industries which is becoming known in the oval track wars as Wrisco Aluminum, has significantly broadened its commitment to the Series by becoming the presenting sponsor for the MACS Rookie of the Year (ROY) Program. Subsequently, the ROY title will be referred to as the Wrisco Aluminum MACS ROY title. Wrisco ’s involvement with the ROY crown will be for the next three season and will provide the titlest with $2,500 in cash. Wrisco is also making a contribution to the general point fund as well as providing gift certificates for aluminum sheets to the top ten drivers at the annual MACS awards banquet.

Also new this season are two separate point systems related to the dash and qualifying. The first program is sponsored by B.A. Malcuit, Malcuit Racing Engines, Strasburg, OH. This program is for the purpose of crowning the Malcuit Racing Engines “Dash King” at the end of the season. It will be a completely separate point systems from the main MACS points title chase. Points for the “Dash King” program will be earned during the Dash and are not added into the drivers main point total. This payoff procedure is again based on 20 completed events. The “Dash King” title will pay $1,000 for the winner with the next four drivers in line sharing the wealth of the program. Also, all competitors using Malcuit Race Engines are eligible to receive a $100.00 gift certificate provided they win a feature event. Points for the Malcuit Race Engines program will be awarded to the top eight (8) Dash cars as follows: 1.) 25; 2.) 20; 3.) 18; 4.) 16; 5.) 14; 6.) 12; 7.) 10; 8.) 8.

The second new program is sponsored by Sue and Jim Stevenson Photography and is dubbed the Sue Stevenson Photography Challenge The Clock. These points are also a separate points system and will be kept for the top ten (10) drivers in time trails at each MACS sanctioned event. The points earned during time trials do not add into the drivers main point total. The purpose of this point system is to determine an overall “Challenge of the Clock” winner. Provided there are 20 events presented, the title will be worth a $1,000 for the winner with the next four drivers sharing the proceeds of the program. Points will be awarded as follows: 1.) 25; 2.) 20; 3.) 18; 4.) 16; 5.) 14; 6.) 12; 7.) 10; 8.) 8; 9.) 6; 10.) 4.

More news will follow with additional sponsor signings, website news, and dates being added to the schedule.

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS) Indiana, PA January 23, 2004
By: Regina Geesey

The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series is pleased to announce several new marketing partners for the upcoming season. “We have had a very busy off-season working on a variety of projects and programs for 2004,” commented Jeff Geesey, Series Public Relations Director. “At this point, we have eight new sponsor programs confirmed with the details still being finalized on a couple of more. We feel by bringing new sponsorship support to the Series that it affords us additional important elements for our continued growth by providing more lucrative post-season awards and incentives for drivers and team owners,” concluded Geesey.

Included in the new sponsorship arrangements are Wild Side Trailers, Franklin, TN producers of some of the finest customized racing trailers and rigs available on the market today; Cousins Designs and Custom Graphics, Eldred, PA, providing dazzling victory lane checks for all the Series events as well as a decal package for one of the top ten drivers in the final point standings. Additionally, Heath Cousins will provide a customized, air brush helmet masterpiece; Cutting Edge, Boone, IA, has designed the new MACS website that will debut within two weeks plus they are also providing decal packages for two of the top point finishers; G&L Racing Supplies, Washington, PA will provide one of the top ten drivers with a new helmet of their choice; Mason Racin’, Millersburg, OH will award a nightly gift certificate to one lucky driver. Rocket Chassis, Shinnston, WV, will award a new Rocket Chassis to the highest finishing driver in the final top ten of points piloting a Rocket during the season.

Two important nightly programs are going to be instituted this year with the support of Malcuit Racing Engines, Strasburg, OH, and Sue and Jim Stevenson Photography, Euclid, OH. We are pleased to be able to add these two programs and their respective incentive awards to our post-season bounty,” interjected Geesey.

Malcuit Racing Engines will sponsor the nightly “Dash King” program that will award points to each of the top eight finishers in the dash. These points will be completely separate from the main driver point system. Points earned during the dash do not add into the drivers primary point total. The purpose of this point system is to determine an overall “Dash King”. Provided there are 20 events presented, the title will pay $1,000 for the winner with the next four drivers sharing in the balance of the program. Points will be awarded to the top 8 Malcuit Race Engines Dash cars as follows: 1.) 25; 2.) 20; 3.)18; 4.) 16; 5.) 14; 6.) 12; 7.) 10; 8.) 8.

Sue and Jim Stevenson Photography “Challenge The Clock” will also be a completely separate points system. The points earned during time trials do not add to the drivers main point total. The purpose of this point system is to determine an overall “Challenge of the Clock” winner. Each night the top ten drivers during time trails will be awarded points. Provided there are 20 events held, the title will pay $1,000 for the winner with the next four drivers sharing the balance of the prize package. Points will be awarded as follows: 1.) 25; 2.) 20; 3.) 18; 4.) 16; 5.) 14; 6.) 12; 7.) 10; 8.) 8; 9.) 6; 10.) 4.

Also just confirmed are additional sponsorship investments from the Jesus Motorsports Outreach program for each of the three Brushcreek Motorsports Complex, Pebbles, OH, events. Tim Adams and Alton Swayne have successfully gained support from the business community in and around Pebbles to provide a $200 fast qualifier award as well as $500 for the winner of the Dash for all three MACS events at Brushcreek this season. The first MACS program at Brushcreek is on Saturday, May 1, and will be a $5,000 to-win show with the total purse of nearly $27,000. One driver could win more than $6,000 with all the added bonuses and contingencies that are available. The next appearance of the Series is for the 3rd Annual American Heritage Harley Davidson 101 on Friday and Saturday, August 6 & 7. Friday night’s program will be a complete, separate, one-day show paying $3,000 to-win from the $23,000 purse with one driver capable of winning more than $4,000. Saturday will also be a complete show with the winner’s laurels including a beautiful American Heritage Harley Davidson with an estimated winners value nearing $20,000 in cash and prizes. One driver could walk away with almost $25,000 for the weekend from the nearly $82,000 in posted prizes and awards. In even bigger news for fans in attendance, one lucky fan will win a Harley Davidson sportster motorcycle.

Rest assured, more announcements will be forthcoming as additional sponsors join the MACS organization for 2004.

MACS Releases First Draft of 2K4 Schedule

Mid- Atlantic Championship Series (MACS) Indiana, PA January 16, 2004
By: Regina Geesey

The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS), entering its eight season of operation under the auspices of the Geesey Brothers is pleased to announce the first draft of the 2004 racing schedule. Coming off of two slim seasons, the Series is now looking forward to a robust 2004. “Fans and drivers alike have been clamoring for the schedule since mid-December and now here it is,” stated an enthusiastic Jeff Geesey Series P.R. Director.

“We have been very busy this off-season working with promoters to bring our events to a much wider and larger audience,” continued Geesey. “At this stage, we have 21 dates, and we are still talking to more host facilities about adding additional shows. Currently, we will be presenting shows at 13 host speedways’ in six states including Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York Virginia, and West Virginia. To-date, the tracks presenting MACS events include, in alphabetical order: Challenger Raceway (PA), Beckley Motor Speedway (WV); Brushcreek Motorsports Complex (OH); Eriez Speedway (PA), Lernerville Motorsports, Inc. (PA); McKean County Raceway (PA); Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway (PA); Potomac Speedway (MD); Raceway 7 (OH); Tri-City Speedway (PA); Stateline Speedway (NY); Virginia Motor Speedway (VA); and Wayne County Speedway (OH),” concluded Geesey.

“We aren’t done quite yet” reassured Geesey. “Other promoters continue to express interest as they ponder the remaining dates available. Tracks still interested in securing date(s) for this season are: “The Rock” Allegany County Speedway (MD); Latrobe Speedway (PA); Muskingum County Speedway (OH); Portsmouth Raceway Park (OH); and West Virginia Motor Speedway (WV). We may not be at all of those just listed, but I think we will be at the majority of them,” related Geesey.

“The balance of the remaining open dates will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. We want to accommodate the promoter’s needs but the window of opportunity for picking selected dates is narrowing fast. Once we get to 30-35 shows we are not going to schedule any more”, summarized Geesey.

In other notable news about the schedule Geesey added, “We are rapidly nearing the one million-dollar mark in prize money for the season. If we gain the rest of the shows that are currently being discussed, then we’ll eclipse that number easily.”

Specific details about each event will be forthcoming in the next several weeks with the kick-off the this season only a 12 short weeks away.
