CAPPS QUALIFIES 11TH AT BRISTOL

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 1, 2004) - Ron Capps drove his Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 11 qualifying position Saturday at Bristol Dragway as qualifying for the O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals was concluded.

Capps, a 14-time NHRA winner, powered his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy flopper to a weekend-best effort of 4.870 seconds at 316.90 mph on his fourth and final qualifying attempt. Capps recorded a performance of 6.087 at 156.57 after losing traction on Saturday?s first qualifying run.

"We were trying to run a low 4.80 this weekend," Capps said. "We knew that getting into the top half of the field and having lane choice wasn't as big a deal here as a lot of other tracks. Both lanes are pretty good."

"We experimented on Saturday's first run, but we're really happy with the changes we made for our final pass. That run, the car did pretty much what we wanted it to do. It spun the tires at the top end or it would have run 321 or 322 mph. We're happy with things."

Capps, who won the inaugural event at Bristol Dragway in 2001, eyes a second win at Thunder Valley when he begins Funny Car eliminations against Gary Densham at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.

DIXON QUALIFIES EIGHTH AT BRISTOL

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 1, 2004) - Two-time consecutive NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon powered his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 8 qualifying position Saturday as qualifying for the O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals completed at Bristol Dragway.

Dixon, who won the Bristol event in 2002, blasted his Dick LaHaie-tuned dragster to a performance of 4.602 seconds at 321.42 mph on his final qualifying attempt to earn the No. 8 qualifying spot and lane choice in the first round of eliminations. On Saturday's first qualifying effort, the Miller-backed rail lost traction and slowed to a run of 6.260 at 138.06.

"We have an opportunity to race on Sunday, which means we have an opportunity to win," Dixon said. "I don't think the lanes make a difference this weekend, cars have gotten down both lanes with no problem."

One of the major concerns entering the Bristol race was the change to the new Good-Year 2096 tire. NHRA mandated that all teams change to the 2096 tire beginning at the Bristol Dragway event.

"It's challenging depending on what the weather is like," said LaHaie. "When it is cool, the tires will take whatever you want to throw at it. When it starts warming up, it can be a problem."

Dixon eyes his second career victory at Thunder Valley when he battles Doug Herbert in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals beginning at 7 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, May 1 and show three hours of final eliminations at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, May 2.

JOHNSON JR. QUALIFIES EIGHTH AT BRISTOL

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BRISTOL, Tenn. (May 1, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 8 qualifying position Saturday at the O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.

The five-time NHRA winner blasted his Mike Green-tuned Monte Carlo to a weekend-best effort of 4.856 seconds at 321.58 to claim the eighth qualifying position and lane choice in the first round of Funny Car eliminations. Johnson's flopper slowed to a pass of 7.265 at 117.58 on Saturday's first qualifying attempt, marking the only run during qualifying that the Iowa native failed to make a full pass on the Bristol Dragway quarter mile.

"We've made it down the race track on eight of our last nine runs," Johnson said. "On Saturday's first run, we were testing to see how far we could push it. Consistency is what we needed to work on and that's what we're getting. You can be consistent, but you need to be consistently quick, and each run the car has gone a little quicker. That allows you to be more optimistic heading into race day."

Johnson looks to win his first career event at Bristol Dragway on Sunday. He'll meet Gary Scelzi in the first round of Funny Car eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET).

JOHNSON JR. SEVENTH FOLLOWING FRIDAY'S QUALIFYING AT BRISTOL

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 30, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal Racing Chevy Funny Car to the No. 7 qualifying position Friday after powering to a run of 4.870 seconds at 319.67 mph at Bristol Dragway.

Johnson blasted to a performance of 4.922 at 313.00 on his first qualifying effort of the weekend before finishing in the seventh spot with the 4.870, 319.67 effort behind the wheel of his Mike Green-tuned flopper. With the two full passes on Friday, Johnson has now posted seven consecutive full passes with his Don Prudhomme-owned Funny Car.

"We figured out what was causing our problems early in the season and we're able to tune the race car," Johnson said. "Our goal is to get in the show on the first run because you know the conditions will be better at night. So, you can tune it up a little bit. I'm plenty pleased and I don't see any reason why we can't improve on Saturday".

"The speeds show the horsepower the engine is producing. We knew we had a clutch problem all along. Our speeds are right there with everyone else in the Funny Car class. We know the motor is making lots of power."

Johnson aims to move up in the Funny Car order when qualifying continues Saturday with sessions at 1 and 4 p.m. (ET).

DIXON SITS NINTH AFTER FRIDAY QUALIFYING AT BRISTOL

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 30, 2004) - Two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon drove his Miller Lite Top Fuel dragster to the No. 9 qualifying spot Friday following the first two qualifying sessions at Bristol Dragway.

Dixon posted a run of 11.016 seconds at 86.38 mph on his first qualifying effort of the weekend after his Miller-back rail lost traction early in the run. Crew chief Dick LaHaie tuned the 33-time event winner to a performance of 4.617 at 320.58 to claim the ninth qualifying position after two of four scheduled qualifying sessions.

"After we smoked the tires on the first run, we needed to set the car up so that we got qualified and we did that," Dixon said. "I'm happy that we're now in the show because it's been proven that you can win from any position on Sunday."

Dixon, who won at Thunder Valley in 2002, aims to move up the Top Fuel ladder when qualifying resumes at 1 and 4 p.m. (ET) on Saturday.

ESPN2 will televise 90 minutes of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals beginning at 7:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, May 1 and show three hours of final eliminations at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, May 2.

CAPPS SITS NINTH AFTER FRIDAY QUALIFYING AT THUNDER VALLEY

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 30, 2004) - Ron Capps powered his Skoal Racing Chevy Funny Car into the ninth qualifying position Friday following the first two qualifying sessions at Bristol Dragway.

Capps piloted his John Stewart-tuned Chevy to a performance of 4.922 seconds at 313.00 mph on the opening qualifying pass. Capps improved on his second attempt, driving his Don Prudhomme-owned flopper to a run of 4.915 at 274.72 to position himself in the No. 9 spot at Thunder Valley.

"On the second run, we were trying to run 4.79 or 4.80 and it had great numbers and got down near the end of the track and suffered an ignition problem, so I clicked if off early," Capps said. "To click it early and still run a 4.91 is pretty impressive. We're real happy with what the car is doing".

"The results that we've experience have not shown the progress that we've made with this Skoal Racing Monte Carlo. Unless you're on this side of the fence, you really don't know how much progress we've made with the car. We feel like we can run a low 4.80 in these conditions this weekend".

Funny Car qualifying resumes at 1 and 4 p.m. (ET) on Saturday as Capps aims to build upon his No. 9 position.

DIXON POSTS SEMIFINAL FINISH AT HOUSTON

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 18, 2004) - Two-time consecutive NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon and the Miller Lite team continued going rounds on race day, posting a semifinal finish at Houston Raceway Park on Sunday.

The 33-time NHRA event winner defeated Brady Kalivoda and Tony Schumacher, before falling to Clay Millican in the Top Fuel semifinals.

Dixon raced to a performance of 4.609 seconds at 302.69 mph to dispose of Kalivoda in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations. In round two, the two-time consecutive champion bested Schumacher, the current NHRA points leader, after powering his Dick LaHaie-tuned Miller Lite rail to the quickest pass of the round at 4.562 at 317.94. Schumacher lost traction and slowed to a pass of 6.820 at 117.70. Dixon's dragster lost traction early in the run in his semifinal matchup with Millican, who drove to a performance of 4.810 at 287.72 to score the win.

"I'm satisfied that we gained 30 points on first place," Dixon said. "We went to the semis on Sunday. You're never happy getting beat. I think everybody's objective is to win races. You come here and you get down to four cars and we had a car that was running really good, but we spun the tires and got beat."

ESPN2 will televise two hours of final eliminations coverage from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the fourth annual O'Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals, April 30-May 2, at Bristol Dragway in Bristol, Tenn.

JOHNSON JR. SUFFERS FIRST ROUND SETBACK AT HOUSTON

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 18, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. and the Skoal Racing crew continued their weekend trend of consistent performances with their Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car. However, the five-time NHRA winner was defeated in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations Sunday at Houston Raceway Park.

Johnson, who qualified in the No. 5 position, powered his Mike Green-tuned Chevy flopper to a run of 4.924 seconds at 303.03 mph, but was edged at the finish line by John Force, who drove to a performance of 4.847 at 308.99. It was Force's best elapsed time of the weekend.

"You hate to lose and you're disappointed, but you can't be upset because we didn't beat ourselves," Johnson said. "We went down the race track and made a good run. The problem is that we drew the wrong guy. (John) Force stepped it up. You knew he was capable of doing that, but you can't go out there and try and go quicker and smoke the tires just because you're running John Force."

Despite the early-round setback, Johnson made five consistent, full passes down the Houston Raceway Park quarter mile and is confident that his Skoal Racing Chevy Funny Car will be a contender in the Funny Car ranks.

"Now that we've made it down the track five runs in a row, the car is a lot more tunable," Johnson said. "The guys are learning how to make it go quicker and a lot of positives came out of this race even though we lost early."

CAPPS SUFFERS EARLY DEFEAT AT HOUSTON

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 18, 2004) - Ron Capps, who qualified his Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo in the top half of the Funny Car order for the second consecutive race, suffered a narrow defeat in the first round of Funny Car eliminations Sunday at Houston Raceway Park.

Capps, who qualified eighth, squared off against 2003 NHRA Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon in round one. The Skoal Racing driver blasted his Don Prudhomme-owned flopper to a performance of 4.947 seconds at 306.81 mph. However, Pedregon's Chevy was slightly quicker, recording a run of 4.892 at 296.63 to take the narrow victory.

"We're real disappointed," Capps said. "We were really comfortable with the way the car was running. We knew the track had been tricky and felt we had an advantage with the down force of the Monte Carlo body. We thought lane choice would be a big deal, but it wasn't at all since the weather cooled down on Sunday. We had to run Tony Pedregon and he's the champ and they have a great car. We didn't make any mistakes, but they just ran a little quicker than us."

ESPN2 will televise two hours of final eliminations coverage from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.

CAPPS RACES TO NO. 8 QUALIFYING SPOT AT HOUSTON

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 17, 2004) - For the second consecutive race, Ron Capps qualified his Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo in the top half of the Funny Car field. Capps powered his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Chevy to the No. 8 qualifying position with a run of 4.912 seconds at 312.71 mph.

On Saturday, Capps drove his John Stewart-tuned flopper to a run of 5.030 at 298.73 on his first qualifying attempt, then lost traction on his final qualifying effort and slowed to a run of 9.191 at 93.31. Capps? speed of 312.71 mph was the top speed of the Funny Car category during qualifying.

"The car is running pretty good and we qualified in the top half of the field which is important," Capps said. "We've got last year's champion in the first round. The conditions are going to be pretty close to what they were on Saturday. You're not going to see very many 4.80s. It's going to come down to which crew chief calls the smartest race and the driver needs to be on his game because the track is going to be slick.

"The track is tricky because it"s still a little green from the resurfacing. There are a few bumps in one lane. You need to really concentrate, as a driver, to keep the car in the center of the track, that's the key."

Capps, a 14-time NHRA winner, will face defending NHRA Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon, who qualified ninth, in the first round of Funny Car eliminations.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals beginning at 1 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18 and show two hours of final eliminations at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.

JOHNSON JR. POWERS TO NO. 5 QUALIFYING SPOT AT HOUSTON

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 17, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. equaled his best qualifying outing of the young 2004 NHRA season at the O?Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. The Iowa native drove his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 5 qualifying position after racing to a run of 4.896 seconds at 311.20 mph.

Johnson and the Skoal Racing crew rebounded following a qualifying setback in Las Vegas two weeks ago, making four, clean runs down the H.R.P. drag strip. Johnson drove his Skoal Racing flopper to runs of 4.969 at 301.33 and 4.933 at 304.46 on Saturday.

"I like our chances on Sunday," Johnson said. "Talk about a rebound. We were pretty dejected at Vegas and as a group we all made sure that wouldn't happen again. We did a great job of making the right changes. To go from not qualifying to making four straight runs down the drag strip and end up fifth is very satisfying."

Johnson, who posted a runner-up finish to John Force two years ago at Houston Raceway Park, will battle the 12-time NHRA champion in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday. Force qualified 12th.

"If you have lane choice on John Force in the first round, that kind of tells you that you're running pretty well," Johnson said. "When you qualify fifth, you have to race a guy at the bottom of the field and you know you're doing all right. I feel good; I'm ready to race."

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals beginning at 1 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18 and show two hours of final eliminations at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.

DIXON QUALIFIES SIXTH AT HOUSTON

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 17, 2004) - Larry Dixon remained in the No. 6 qualifying position Saturday following the completion of qualifying at the O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park. Dixon clocked his best performance of qualifying when he drove his Miller Lite dragster to a run of 4.577 seconds at 324.75 mph on his second of four qualifying efforts.

The two-time consecutive NHRA POWERade Top Fuel champion suffered mechanical problems on both qualifying attempts on Saturday, losing traction on the first pass and then breaking a blower belt on the second attempt. The 33-time NHRA event winner drove his Miller-backed rail to the 4.577-second effort on Friday evening. Dixon's 324.75-mph speed was the top speed of qualifying in the Top Fuel category.

"I'm glad that we qualified in the top half of the field," said Dixon, who clocked the first 4.4-second run in NHRA history at H.R.P. in 1999. "We had trouble getting down the track on Saturday. On the first run, it spun the tires and on the second pass the car dropped a cylinder and threw the belt off. If we correct those problems, I feel good about our chances on Sunday."

Dixon, a two-time winner at Houston Raceway Park, will face Brady Kalivoda in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations which began at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals beginning at 1 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18 and show two hours of final eliminations at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.

CAPPS POWERS TO NO. 6 SPOT AT HOUSTON ON FRIDAY

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 16, 2004) - Ron Capps powered his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 6 qualifying position Friday at Houston Raceway Park after clocking a performance of 4.912 seconds at 312.71 mph on his second qualifying effort.

Capps opened qualifying with a run of 8.416 at 102.21 after his Chevy Funny Car lost traction on the newly resurfaced Houston Raceway Park drag strip. On his second of four scheduled qualifying attempts, Capps blasted his Skoal Racing Chevy into the top half of the Funny Car order.

"On the first run, the track was very, very green," Capps said. "It was pretty much everybody smoking the tires. The Safety Safari did a great job of getting the track ready for the evening session, and sure enough, out comes the 4.80s on Friday night."

"We were pretty much at the front of the pack on the second run, so we couldn't really stand on it. We wanted to make a safe run. The guys wanted to run a low 4.90 and that's what the car did. We're in the show, now we can concentrate on our race day setup on Saturday."

Capps look to move up the Funny Car order when qualifying continues Saturday with nitro qualifying sessions at noon and 3 p.m. (CT).

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals beginning at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 17 and show two hours of final eliminations at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.

JOHNSON JR. QUALIFIES FOURTH AT HOUSTON ON FRIDAY

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 16, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. and the Skoal Racing Funny Car crew rebounded from a qualifying setback two weeks ago in Las Vegas and raced to the No. 4 qualifying position at Houston Raceway Park on Friday.

Johnson, a five-time NHRA winner, cruised to a run of 5.045 seconds at 275.11 mph on Friday's first qualifying effort, before blasting his Mike Green-tuned Chevy Monte Carlo to a performance of 4.896 at 311.20. Johnson sits fourth best with two qualifying attempts scheduled for Saturday.

"The first run was a get back on track run to get in the show," Johnson said. "I know Mike (Green) and the guys would have liked to have stepped on it harder on the second run, but they're still a bit conservative after Vegas. So, we just wanted to get in the show."

"It was a nice, easy run with a pretty solid speed. It was a clean run all the way down the quarter mile. We learned a lot during testing after Vegas. Friday night gets you qualified and on Saturday's you work on the race-day tune-up."

Johnson aims to claim his first No. 1 qualifying position in more than three years when Funny Car qualifying continues Saturday at noon and 3 p.m. (CT).

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals beginning at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 17 and show two hours of final eliminations at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.

DIXON RECORDS TOP SPEED EN ROUTE TO NO. 6 QUALIFYING
POSITION ON FRIDAY AT HOUSTON

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 16, 2004) - Two-time defending NHRA POWERade Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon raced to the No. 6 qualifying position Friday at Houston Raceway Park after powering his Dick LaHaie-tuned Miller Lite dragster to a run of 4.577 seconds at 324.75 mph - top speed of the Top Fuel category.

On Dixon's first attempt of the weekend, his Miller Lite rail lost traction and slowed to a performance of 5.289 at 183.87. Dixon posted the quickest half-track elapsed time on the opening run. On Friday's second effort, he blasted the Miller-backed dragster to the No. 6 position.

"It spun the tires on the first pass, so we had to abort the run," Dixon said. "We hopped the car up a little bit knowing we had to make a good run to get solidly into the field, but nothing crazy. We wanted to get down the race track. We ended up sixth in the session and have top speed. That means things are coming together with this new combination."

Dixon aims to move up the Top Fuel ladder when qualifying continues at noon and 3 p.m. (CT) on Saturday.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the O'Reilly Spring Nationals beginning at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 17 and show two hours of final eliminations at 5 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 18.

JOHNSON JR. HOPES TO REBOUND IN LONE STAR STATE

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 13, 2004) - Following a qualifying setback in Sin City where Tommy Johnson's 37-race qualifying streak abruptly ended at Las Vegas, the five-time NHRA winner immediately focused his attention towards the next race in Texas.

"You hate to struggle and you can't afford to struggle more than one race or you'll fall way behind," Johnson said. "We lost a little ground in Vegas, but it could be worse. We want to bounce back and show we're a true contender in the Funny Car class. It's really important for the confidence of the entire crew to get this thing going in the right direction."

Johnson and Don Prudhomme's Skoal Racing Funny Cars look to return to the top 10 in the NHRA Funny Car standings when the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series visits the Lone Star State for the first time, April 15-18, for the 17th annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.

"The other day, someone asked me if anybody has ever had a DNQ and still won the championship," Johnson said. "I told them Larry (Dixon) and the Miller Lite dragster did it in 2002."

"As bad as the DNQ sounds, we really only lost 20 points. If we would have lost in the first round at Vegas, we'd have only had 20 more points. If you can't make up 20 points over 19 races, then you shouldn't be out there racing. It's really not much worse than a first round loss."

Johnson, whose best career finish at the Texas facility was a runner-up finish to John Force two years ago, is confident that his Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo can make some noise in the Funny Car ranks and feels the car's clean performance will play a key role in the finish of the car.

"Another thing we have going is that we have zero oil down penalties, while some of the other guys have two or more," Johnson said. "Two oil downs are the same as a DNQ. If you lose 10 points per oil down, that can add up to a lot of points over the course of the season."

Another factor this weekend is the new track surface at HRP. The weather forecast is calling for warm temperatures, which could produce tricky track conditions for the crew chiefs and drivers.

"It could be Gainesville (Fla.) all over again," Johnson said. "The track at Houston has a new surface and will be very green. When it's hot, the oil tends to come up to the surface of the track, and a new track and hot weather makes it hard to get the rubber to stick. We did pretty well at Gainesville, so I'm hoping for some hot conditions at Houston."

CAPPS HOPES FOR MORE BIG SPEEDS AT HOUSTON

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 12, 2004) - When someone mentions Houston Raceway Park, the first thought that enters the mind is, "fast drag strip." The track elevation at HRP is 10 feet above sea level, which is any crew chief's dream. The sea level conditions and cool spring weather at the Texas facility typically deliver some of the quickest and fastest performances of the 20 race tracks on the NHRA POWERade circuit.

At the last national event in Las Vegas, Ron Capps powered his Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo to a career-best speed when he tripped the clocks at 324.75 mph during qualifying. The Las Vegas track is elevated at more than 2,100 feet above sea level. With that in mind, Capps has his sights tunneled towards another career-best speed when the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series makes its annual trek to Houston Raceway Park, April 15-18, for the 17th annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals. Capps, a 14-time NHRA winner, has never won at HRP.

When Capps debuted the new Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car body in February, he immediately raved of the car's safety features and increased driver visibility. However, the on-track performance of the Monte Carlo body was still a question mark because the team had yet to gather sufficient data with the new piece. After unleashing his Chevy to a 4.779 second, 324.75 mph pass in Las Vegas, Capps and the rest of the GM flopper contingent are ready to make a run at the NHRA record books with the new aerodynamic piece.

"At mid-track, I could tell it was on a really good pass," Capps said. "That's where I really started to feel the car move. We ran 263 mph at half-track, which is phenomenal for a Funny Car. I felt the Monte Carlo throw me back. It even dropped two cylinders which makes that run more encouraging. The conditions were good at Vegas and it was a great call by our crew chiefs. I was relieved when I heard the performance because we've known that the car has wanted to run those numbers for some time."

Weather plays a critical role at each race and if the third weekend in April in Southern Texas experiences cool, dry conditions, look out because drivers will be focused on setting an NHRA record and earning 20 bonus points.

"The conditions at Houston have always been good enough to set a national record let alone a track record," Capps said. "It's a track that's been repaved recently and I hear great things about the new surface. If we get the conditions we think we're gonna have and it's not too hot and humid, then you'll see a lot of drivers set personal bests at Houston. I won't be surprised if we finally see a Funny Car crack the 330-mph barrier there."

DIXON EYES SECOND CAREER 4.4-SECOND PASS AT
ULTRA-QUICK HOUSTON FACILITY

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

BAYTOWN, Texas (April 12, 2004)  A little more than five years ago, two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon made NHRA history at Houston Raceway Park. On Friday, April 9, 1999, the 1995 NHRA Rookie of the Year powered his Miller Lite dragster to the first 4.4-second elapsed time in NHRA history when he covered the HRP quarter mile in 4.486 seconds.

"I was pretty happy with the number," Dixon said. "The first pass on that Friday, we ran a 4.51 and the engine dropped a few cylinders early in the run. We knew that if we fixed that, it was possible to not only run a 4.40, but to get the national record. We came back and the car stuck and we were the first car to run under 4.5-seconds in the quarter mile."

Some five years later, Dixon aims to repeat the accomplishment and clock his second career sub-4.5-second pass when the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series makes the first of two visits to the Lone Star State for the 17th annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals, April 15-18, at Houston Raceway Park.

"At the time, (crew chief) Dale (Armstrong) was very motivated on wanting to be the first to run a 4.40," Dixon said. "He had been involved in breaking a lot of barriers and he was really motivated for us to do that. As a driver, you tend to get caught up in that. It was great for us to be the first, but we didn't win the race. Dick LaHaie tuned (Doug) Herbert to the win running 4.60s all weekend. I had a lot of respect for how LaHaie did things. I would have been happier to have run 4.60s and win the race".

"Later that year, Gary Scelzi and Alan Johnson ran a 4.480 at Houston and took the record from us. LaHaie, who was with our team then, tuned us to 4.50s and we won the race. We've won a lot of races and a few championships not running 4.40s, so I'm probably more proud of that."

Dixon, a two-time winner at the Baytown facility, has heard the cries from experts and fans alike regarding his lack of 4.4-second performances.

"I'm just a racer, not a critic," Dixon said. "I just go out there and try to do the best I can. I know our team does the best with what we've got and we've been somewhat successful to date."

The Baytown track has a reputation for being one of the quickest and fastest drag strips on the NHRA circuit and deservedly so. The first two 4.4-second runs in NHRA history were clocked on the HRP quarter mile, and with the right weather conditions this weekend, there's an excellent chance that the Miller Lite dragster will again be a 4.40 race car.

"If the conditions are right, there will be a lot of cars running 4.40s and I hope we're one of them, but I'd rather win the race," Dixon said. "Nobody has run a 4.40 in the final round yet this season. And when summer gets here, you'll have a better shot of running 5.40s than 4.40s."

JOHNSON JR. SUFFERS SETBACK AT LAS VEGAS

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

LAS VEGAS (April 3, 2004)  Tommy Johnson Jr., who earned his last NHRA Funny Car victory at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2001, suffered a setback behind the wheel of his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car Saturday during qualifying at The Strip.

The five-time NHRA winner failed to qualify his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy Monte Carlo for Sunday's final eliminations at the fifth annual Summitracing.com Nationals. Johnson, who entered the event 10th in the Funny Cars points standings, recorded a run of 5.566 seconds at 210.05 mph. On his second qualifying effort, Johnson's flopper overpowered the track and slowed to a pass of 7.813 at 107.70.

After the first two qualifying sessions were canceled due to inclement weather on Friday, Johnson and the Skoal Racing crew had their backs against the wall with only two shots to make the 16-car field. It marks the first time that Johnson has failed to race on Sunday since June 2002.

"Nothing makes this better," Johnson said. "Yeah, there is another race in two weeks, but it can't make up for this one. This is rough. It's not acceptable for us not to qualify. The rain bit us only getting two qualifying runs, but everyone else only had two runs. It's very frustrating."

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the Summitracing.com Nationals at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 3, and broadcast two hours of final eliminations coverage at 11 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 4.

CAPPS AIMS FOR TURNAROUND AT LAS VEGAS

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

LAS VEGAS (March 31, 2004) - Ron Capps has achieved just about every major accomplishment in NHRA drag racing except finishing the season at the Auto Club Finals in Pomona, Calif. on top of the Funny Car points standings and winning an NHRA championship.

Capps, a 14-time NHRA winner, has won in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories; only 13 drivers have accomplished that feat. He drives one of the two Skoal Racing Funny Cars for arguably the biggest name in the sport, Don Prudhomme. Capps was named "Road to the Future" award winner in 1997. He also has won the Budweiser Shootout at Indianapolis, which garners a $100,000 bonus, three times while driving for Prudhomme. And, he has raced to top 10 finishes in the Funny Car standings in each of his seven seasons while driving for Don Prudhomme Racing.

"When you hear a list of all your accomplishments, you start thinking of all the big names in drag racing that I've followed for years like Don Prudhomme and Ed McCulloch," Capps said. "So, when you hear your name at the end of that list, you kind of lose sight because you're focused on winning races and a championship. To win multiple Showdowns at Indy and to win in both categories, it's hard to picture myself with many of the greats of the sport of drag racing."

Capps, who enters the fourth event of the 2004 NHRA season in the No. 14 spot in the Funny Car points standings, looks to right his season and add to that list of achievements when the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series makes its first of two stops at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, April 1-4, just north of the famed Las Vegas Strip.

"The results don't show it, but we've made strides," Capps said. "We've had some unfortunate things happen during eliminations. We've just hit a string where we are running into bad luck. Like in the first round at Pomona (Calif.), we run 4.80 and lose. That would have won just about every other match up.

"I can tell you, it's not for lack of effort. The guys are working hard to make this Skoal Racing Monte Carlo win rounds. It's got to turn around. John Stewart and the guys have worked hard and the car is on the edge of breaking out and winning races. It's just a matter of time. Things just have to start falling our way."

Both of the Don Prudhomme-owned Skoal Racing Funny Cars has experienced success at the Las Vegas track as both Capps and Tommy Johnson Jr. have been the last man standing at The Strip. With a consistent tune-up and a bit of luck, there's a very good chance Capps' Skoal Racing Chevy will be one car opponents won't want to match up against on Sunday, April 4.

"I've won there and have posted some good results at The Strip," Capps said. "Tommy also has won at Vegas a few years back. It's close to home, which makes it exciting as well. I think we'll go some rounds this weekend."

JOHNSON JR. RETURNS TO SITE OF LAST CAREER NHRA VICTORY
LOOKING TO BREAK THE BANK AT THE STRIP

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

LAS VEGAS (March 29, 2004)  Tommy Johnson Jr. has reached the pinnacle of NHRA drag racing on many different levels. The second generation racer from Iowa is one of 13 drivers to have earned NHRA victories in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories, the two premier classes in the sport of drag racing. He also drove an alcohol Funny Car to an NHRA national event victory in 1988.

Ask the spectacle-clad driver which of the 20 race tracks on the NHRA circuit he enjoys racing at the most and without hesitation he'll say Las Vegas. Johnson has had pretty good success at the Bruton Smith-owned track since joining Don Prudhomme Racing prior to the 2001 NHRA campaign.

"Las Vegas is absolutely my favorite race on the tour," Johnson said. "The best thing about Gainesville being over is that Vegas is the next race on the schedule. I don't know what it is about the place, but I just enjoy racing there. If NHRA ran all 23 races at Vegas, it would be fine with me. The breaks seem to go my way at The Strip. It's a fun race and I'm really relaxed at Las Vegas."

T.J. captured his only victory under the Snake Racing umbrella at The Strip in 2001 and scored a runner-up finish the following season. Johnson and his Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo aim for another successful weekend in Sin City when the NHRA returns to the desert for the fifth annual Summitracing.com NHRA Nationals, April 1-4, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

After qualifying in the top half of the Funny Car order at the past two NHRA events in Arizona and Florida where he advanced to round two during eliminations, the Indianapolis resident is confident that his Mike Green-tuned Chevy Funny Car will once again see success at The Strip.

"I'm as confident as ever heading into Las Vegas," Johnson said. "What lifted my spirits after Gainesville was looking at points and seeing us in the top 10. We haven't done as well as we should have, but we're only 2 1/2 rounds out of second place. So, we're still in the hunt and have a chance to make a run at the POWERade championship.

"If we can leave Vegas in the top five we'll be in good shape. Our goal is to win the race and move into the top five in the Funny Car points. We've qualified better recently and moved into the Skoal Showdown. The Skoal Racing crew is making improvements and we're continuing to go forward. As soon as we figure out the consistency we'll be a contender, but none of that matters at Vegas because I have history on my side."

History is an important, unexplainable factor in the drag racing world. Some drivers just seem to have success at certain race tracks no matter what adversity they're faced with. With a little consistency, there's an excellent chance that Johnson and Don Prudhomme's Skoal Racing Chevy Funny Car will ride the wave of past success into the winner's circle at The Strip.

DIXON LOOKS TO CASH IN AT SPRING
LAS VEGAS RACE FOR THIRD STRAIGHT SEASON

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

LAS VEGAS (March 29, 2004)  Two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon and Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite Top Fuel team have played the right cards at NHRA's spring event at the Bruton Smith-owned Las Vegas Motor Speedway the past few seasons, collecting the weekend's biggest prize' the NHRA "Wally" trophy and valuable POWERade points.

The three-time winner at The Strip hopes to break the bank yet again when the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series makes the first of two visits to Las Vegas, April 1-4, for the fifth annual Summitracing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"I'm excited about going back to Las Vegas ," said Dixon , a 33-time NHRA winner who set the Top Fuel speed record at 332.75 mph at The Strip last April. "We've had good success at The Strip in the past. We're the defending event champion going into the race and I'm really excited with the way the Miller Lite dragster is running. The car keeps going quicker and faster and I don't expect it to slow down."

Despite entering the spring Las Vegas event in ninth place in the Top Fuel points standings, Dixon's Dick LaHaie-tuned Miller-backed rail demonstrated the kind of performance that helped Dixon race to two consecutive NHRA championships at the recently completed Gainesville, Fla. event, as the Indianapolis resident qualified a season-best fifth and recorded the second quickest elapsed time of the race.

"I think Snake said it best that if you give Dick LaHaie the same equipment that everyone else is using, he'll find a way to go quicker and faster than most," Dixon said. "With all new pieces that are on this race car and to be up to speed as quickly as we are shows how talented of an individual LaHaie really is."

Following a second round finish at the first event of the season in Pomona, Calif., LaHaie decided to make the change to the popular setback supercharger that was being used by all of the top teams, along with continuing to develop the six-disc clutch program. In just two races, the Miller Lite car clocked the second quickest and fastest times of the Gainesville race (4.598 seconds at 316.01 mph).

"I figured it would come around quickly," LaHaie said. "It doesn't surprise me. When you have good equipment and the talented guys that we've got on this team, there's no reason the performance shouldn't be there."

The combination of Prudhomme's leadership skills, Dixon's championship driving experience and LaHaie's tuning prowess, should see the Miller Lite dragster as one of the odds-on favorites to visit the winner's circle at The Strip come Sunday afternoon on April 4.

DIXON SUFFERS RARE FIRST-ROUND SETBACK AT GAINESVILLE

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 21, 2004)  Two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon missed out on an opportunity to earn his fourth career victory at the track where he earned his NHRA Top Fuel license 10 years ago when the 33-time NHRA event winner suffered an uncommon first-round defeat Sunday at Gainesville Raceway.

Dixon powered his Miller Lite rail to a pass of 4.598 seconds at 316.01 mph, but was edged at the finish line by just inches by Doug Kalitta's Mac Tools dragster, which clocked a performance of 4.607 at 307.48. It was one of the closest races of the day at Gainesville Raceway.

"We were on the wrong end of a real tight drag race," Dixon said. "It's a bummer, that's for sure. I had a decent reaction time, but he had a better one. No driver likes to lose on a holeshot and the fact is that I did. I feel bad for the team."

Dixon and the Dick LaHaie-tuned Miller Lite dragster continued to make progress with the new setback blower and six-disc clutch combination, qualifying No. 5 at Gainesville Raceway, a season-best, and posting the second quickest run of the opening round of eliminations.

"The car is running pretty good," Dixon said. "We were the second quickest of the session. Dick LaHaie is sorting things out pretty quickly with the car. Again, we were just on the wrong end of a close race on Sunday. You could run that race again and get a different outcome."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the fifth annual Summitracing.com NHRA Nationals, April 1-4, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

CAPPS AND SKOAL RACINGSM CREW SUFFER EARLY SETBACK IN FLORIDA

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 21, 2004)  Ron Capps attempt to capture his 15th career NHRA victory and help team owner Don "the Snake" Prudhomme inch closer towards his 100th career victory fell short when the California driver fell in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations Sunday at Gainesville Raceway.

Capps, one of 13 NHRA drivers to have earned victories in both Top Fuel and Funny Car, matched-up against longtime rival John Force in round one. The Skoal Racing driver used a startling-line advantage to get an early jump on Force and raced to a run of 5.143 seconds at 259.66, but Force outdistanced Capps  Monte Carlo Funny Car at the finish line with a performance of 5.000 at 273.47.

"We are going to run into tough weekends like this," Capps said. "You don't expect to run into a track that's tough to get down until the summer months. We did so well in testing and now we're fighting to get the car down the track. It's just a matter of staying after it. It's easy to throw your hands up in the air and shrug your shoulders and say what are we going to do But, that's what makes champions, champions. And then win you win it really pays off because you've been through a lot of adversity."

JOHNSON JR. REACHES QUARTERFINALS AT GAINESVILLE

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 21, 2004)  Tommy Johnson Jr. and the Skoal RacingSM Funny Car of Don "the Snake" Prudhomme continued moving forward towards returning to the NHRA winner's circle after making a second consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals Sunday at Gainesville Raceway.

Johnson powered his Mike Green-tuned Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 7 qualifying position  marking the second consecutive event that Johnson has qualified in the top half of the Funny Car order  and advanced to the second round of Funny Car eliminations for the second straight race.

The Iowa native defeated 2003 NHRA Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon in the first round after Johnson powered his Skoal Racing Chevy to a performance of 5.013 seconds at 298.70 mph to hold off Pedregon's run of 5.020 at 290.60 in one of the closest races of the day.

In round two, Johnson got the jump on opponent Cory Lee, but Johnson's Monte Carlo lost traction as he slowed to a run of 5.769 at 199.46, while Lee ran 5.216 at 277.34 for the win.

"It's a little frustrating when you give one away like that," Johnson said. "We should have been able to beat a 5.21. We're looking pretty good for the rest of the season, it's just frustrating. We're a little bit off on the consistency and that's the key on race day. Sunday is all about being consistent. Making one or two good runs on a Sunday will never win a drag race."

CAPPS WILL START 12TH AT GAINESVILLE

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 20, 2004)  Ron Capps drove his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car to the No. 12 qualifying spot Saturday as qualifying for the 35th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals was completed.

Capps, a 14-time NHRA event winner, drove to a weekend-best performance of 5.052 seconds at 293.73 mph on Saturday's first qualifying effort, before slowing to a run of 5.477 at 185.52 on his final qualifying attempt.

"We feel comfortable that if the weather stays the same that we can duplicate what the car was trying to do on the last run on Saturday," Capps said. "We haven't started off with the best results at the first two races, but right now, as tough as this Funny Car class is, anybody can win these races."

Capps will face off against long-time nemesis John Force in the first round of Funny Car eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET).

"He (John Force) is the best guy out there," Capps said. "We're not going to focus on racing (John) Force. We know they're going to run pretty good. We're still working on our setup. It's unfortunate that we have to race someone that tough early in the day."

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the Mac Tools Gatornationals beginning at 2:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 21 and show two hours of final eliminations at 11:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 21.

JOHNSON JR. QUALIFIES SEVENTH AT GAINESVILLE

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 20, 2004)  For the second consecutive event, Tommy Johnson Jr. and Don Prudhomme's Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car will start in the top half of the field. Johnson powered his Mike Green-tuned flopper to the No. 7 qualifying position Saturday at Gainesville Raceway.

On his fourth and final qualifying attempt of the weekend, Johnson blasted his Skoal Racing Funny Car to a performance of 5.003 seconds at 302.72 mph, improving over his earlier effort of 5.142 at 268.01.

It's nice to get into the top half of the field, Johnson said. Lane choice might be critical come first round tomorrow. The track is coming around with each run. I was afraid we might be too soft with the tune-up on that last run, but we moved up the ladder. We could have probably run quicker.

"We made progressive steps each pass this weekend. The first run on Friday we smoked the tires at half-track. Then we ran a 5.15, a 5.14 and then a 5.00 on our last pass. Depending on the weather tomorrow, we should run 4.90s."

Johnson will have lane choice in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations when he battles No. 10 qualifier Tony Pedregon.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the Mac Tools Gatornationals beginning at 2:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 21 and show two hours of final eliminations at 11:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 21.

DIXON RACES TO NO. 5 SPOT AT GATORNATIONALS

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 20, 2004)  Three-time Mac Tools Gatornationals winner Larry Dixon powered to his best qualifying position of the young 2004 NHRA season Saturday when he drove his Miller Lite dragster to the No. 5 qualifying position with a run of 4.668 seconds at 306.33 mph at Gainesville Raceway.

On Dixon's first effort of the day, the Indianapolis resident raced to a performance of 4.732 at 280.11 after shutting off before the 1,320-foot finish line because the engine lost power after dropping cylinders. On his final qualifying attempt of the weekend, Dixon, who won his second career NHRA race at Gainesville Raceway in 1995, blasted his Dick LaHaie-tuned rail to the 4.668, 306.33 effort, a weekend-best pass.

As long as you're qualified, you can win from any position, Dixon said. I kind of feel confident in what Dick LaHaie is doing with the Miller Lite car. We keep going forward and the car keeps running better.

Dixon, who aims to collect his fourth career Mac Tools Gatornationals victory on Sunday, will face-off with Doug Kalitta in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET). Dixon will have lane choice in the opening round. It marks the third consecutive race that the two drivers have met during eliminations.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the Mac Tools Gatornationals beginning at 2:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 21 and show two hours of final eliminations at 11:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 21.

JOHNSON JR. RACES TO NO. 12 SPOT ON FRIDAY AT GAINESVILLE

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 19, 2004)  Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 12 qualifying spot Friday at Gainesville Raceway during the opening round of qualifying for the 35th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals.

Johnson powered his Don "The Snake" Prudhomme-owned flopper to a run of 6.449 seconds at 136.26 mph on Friday?s first qualifying attempt. The car lost traction near half-track on the weekend's opening pass.

On Friday's final attempt, the Iowa native drove his Snake Racing Funny Car to a performance of 5.151 at 244.96, good enough to claim the No. 12 qualifying position. There are 18 Funny Cars attempting to make the 16-car field on Sunday.

Despite the tracks best attempt to defeat us today, it didn't, Johnson Jr. said. We didn't win, but we're in the show. It's a very tricky race track and we figured out what it's going to take to get down this track.

I shut off early on the second run. Until we get a little more confidence on this new tune-up with the setback blower where the engine won't hurt itself when the car spins the tires, I don't have a problem lifting early. We'll be all right on Saturday. The track is getting better as more runs are made, which will allow us to be more aggressive on Saturday.

Johnson looks to improve upon his No. 12 qualifying position when professional qualifying continues at noon and 3:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, March 20.

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the Mac Tools Gatornationals beginning at 2:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 21 and show two hours of final eliminations at 11:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, March 21.

CAPPS DRIVES TO NO. 9 SPOT ON FRIDAY AT GAINESVILLE

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 19, 2004)  Ron Capps powered his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car to the No. 9 qualifying position after the 14-time NHRA winner drove to a run of 5.117 seconds at 286.16 mph Friday afternoon at Gainesville Raceway.

On his first run down the resurfaced Gainesville Raceway quarter-mile, Capps' John Stewart-tuned flopper lost traction near half-track and slowed to a pass of 5.716 at 172.67. On Friday?s second pass, Capps powered his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Chevy to the 5.117, 286.16 performance.

This track is very green, Capps said. There haven't been a lot of races on the new surface here in Gainesville and when the nitro cars show up, it?s tough for us to get down the track. It just takes runs on the track. By the end of the weekend, you'll see some good times.

As a driver, you have to be on your toes. You have to talk with the crew chiefs and find out if they want you to stay in the throttle or to lift if the car smokes the tires. I stayed in the throttle on the second run. I clicked early on the first run. We'll get four runs because the weather is going to be good all weekend. We wanted to be in the show today, which is why I stayed in the throttle on the second pass on Friday.

Capps aims to improve his qualifying position when Funny Car time trials continue at noon and 3:30 p.m.

DIXON SITS IN NO. 9 POSITION AFTER FRIDAY QUALIFYING IN FLORIDA

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 19, 2004)  Larry Dixon powered his Don "the Snake" Prudhomme-owned Miller Lite dragster to a run of 4.799 seconds at 248.55 mph on Friday's second qualifying pass at Gainesville Raceway to qualify his Miller-backed rail in the No. 9 position after the first day of qualifying at the 35th annual Mac Tools Gatornationals.

The two-time defending NHRA POWERade champion broke a throttle cable on his first pass of the weekend, before driving his Dick LaHaie-tuned dragster to the 4.799 pass on Friday's second qualifying effort. Dixon's dragster was clocked at 263 mph at half-track, before the three-time Gatornationals winner lifted near the 1,000-foot mark after the engine dropped two cylinders.

You can hear and feel when the car drops a cylinder, Dixon said. If you figure our dragster's engine makes 8,000 horsepower, and you lose two cylinders, that's 25-percent of the engine's power. If you suddenly take away 2,000 horsepower, you can feel it.

It's a brand new surface on this race track and it doesn't have a lot of rubber on it. The weather is warm also. If it was 10 or 15 degrees cooler, some guys would probably be running 4.40s, but it's not and they're not.

Dixon and the Miller Lite team will look to move into the top half of the Top Fuel order when qualifying continues at noon and 3:30 p.m.

JOHNSON JR. AIMS FOR FIRST CAREER VICTORY AT CELEBRATED GATORNATIONALS

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 15, 2004)  Two weeks ago in Phoenix, Tommy Johnson Jr. and the Skoal Racing crew took their first step towards accomplishing their goal of returning to the NHRA winner's circle.

Johnson, who posted his best qualifying position (fourth) since last June racing to a run of 4.823 seconds, recorded his first round victory of the season at Firebird International Raceway.

We continued making improvements at Phoenix, Johnson said. We were confident going in there and it showed. We had our best qualifying effort in a long time and our first round win was like an event victory for the guys. We needed that win. We tested at Phoenix on Monday and it went well; the confidence is high for the Skoal Racing Funny Cars.

With just two races under their belts with the new Chevy Monte Carlo body, the Skoal Racing crews are still getting adjusted to the tuning nuances that the new body prefers compared to last season's Camaro Funny Car body.

The new Monte Carlo is much better, but we've yet to discover the mph advantage, Johnson said. We're still learning the top end tune-up on the car. We've posted some solid speeds so far. I can't wait to get to Gainesville and go after my career-best speed.

The Iowa native looks to continue his progress towards returning his Skoal Racing Chevy Monte Carlo to winning form March 18-21 as the NHRA returns to Gator Country for the 35th running of the Mac Tools Gatornationals, one of the most historic events on the 23-race NHRA schedule.

Following the 2004 season-opener in Pomona, Calif., where Johnson qualified his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy Funny Car in the No. 11 spot, Johnson and crew chief Mike Green were focused on improving their qualifying position with the hopes of having lane choice for the opening round. They accomplished that goal in Phoenix and will attempt qualify near the top of the Funny Car order at the ultra-quick Gainesville Raceway quarter-mile.

Lane choice is always a factor and who you draw is important in how the day plays out, Johnson said. Phoenix showed us how important qualifying is. Lane choice is a big deal. Plus, earning points for the Skoal Showdown at Indy is important.

I don't know if lane choice will be a factor at Gainesville since there is a new surface. It's always nice to pick your choice of lane and the order you want to run in for the first round. Also, the intimidation factor. If you make four good runs in qualifying, you have a mental advantage on your opponent.

Johnson made his NHRA debut at the 1984 Gatornationals, so he is well aware the significance of a victory at the historic Gainesville facility holds.

I love the track, Johnson said. It's one of my favorite races on the schedule. Gainesville was the first national event I raced at in 1984 (Super Gas). It's definitely one race I want to win before my career is over. There is something special about Gainesville.

CAPPS AIMS FOR FIRST CAREER TITLE
AT HISTORIC GATORNATIONALS

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 15, 2004) - At the beginning of each season, every driver makes a list of goals they hope to accomplish: low qualifier awards, contend for a championship and specific races they?d like to win. There are a handful of races on the 23-race NHRA schedule that stand above the rest, and the Mac Tools Gatornationals is one event victory any driver would cherish.

It's one of the more prestigious races on the NHRA circuit, Capps said. The fans are everywhere, the attendance at the Gatornationals is unbelievable. When you drive into the track, you pass all the fans camping and hanging out. It's kind of like Brainerd, Minn., people plan vacations around the Gatornationals.

Plus it was one of those races that you would always read about. Living in California, you wanted to attend the Gators. When you think of all the drag racing legends that have won and staged their car on that track, it's pretty amazing.

Capps, a 14-time NHRA event winner, has never stepped foot in the Gainesville Raceway winner's circle. He hopes to change that when the NHRA POWERade Series makes its only Florida appearance, March 18-21, for the 35th running of the historic Mac Tools Gatornationals.

Capps, who led the Funny Car points standings heading into last season's event at Gainesville, enters the 2004 race hoping to kick his season into high gear.

We stayed after Phoenix and did some testing and things went really well, Capps said. We're still learning this new Monte Carlo body and what it likes and doesn't, but this Skoal Racing Funny Car has loads of potential. We have a fast car that can win races.

I was at Frank Hawley's School at Gainesville Raceway earlier this year and they recently repaved the track. It's really smooth now. It was always a fast race track, now it should be even faster.

Capps car owner, Don ?the Snake Prudhomme, powered his Funny Cars to victory at Gainesville five times during his illustrious 32-year driving career. Capps, who is in his eighth season at Snake Racing, would like nothing better than to follow in Prudhomme's footsteps and bring another Gatornationals trophy back to the West Coast.

Gainesville is one of the big five races that have been around a long time, Capps said. It's very prestigious, along with the Pomonas, Indy, Columbus and Englishtown. Reading about the Gators, it would mean a lot to have my name on a ?Wally? trophy from Gainesville, Fla.

DIXON EYES FIRST VICTORY OF 2004
AT THE SITE OF TRACK WHERE HE
EARNED HIS TOP FUEL LICENSE TEN YEARS AGO

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 15, 2004)  Gainesville Raceway is a special place for Larry Dixon. Ten years ago, the then 27 year-old Dixon, then a crew member on Don Prudhomme's Top Fuel dragster, earned his NHRA Top Fuel license at the historic Florida facility the Monday after the 1994 Gatornationals.

A year later, Dixon returned to the Sunshine State and collected his second career NHRA victory when he drove his Prudhomme-owned MGD dragster to the win over Blaine Johnson to capture his second "Wally" trophy in his first three races.

Gainesville will always hold great memories for me, Dixon said. Starting out going to Frank Hawley's School in 1990. Then getting my fuel license in 1994. Then winning there my first season as a driver and having won there back-to-back in '01-'02. Gainesville has been good to us.

Now, in his 10th season behind the wheel of his Miller-backed dragster, Dixon aims to collect his first NHRA victory of the season and move into the thick of the Top Fuel points race when the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series makes its only appearance in Florida for the 35th running of the Mac Tools Gatornationals, March 18-21.

After posting second round finishes at the first two events of the 2004 NHRA campaign, the two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion is confident he'll return to winning form after crew chief Dick LaHaie's decision to change the engine combination on Dixon's Miller Lite car, which now features the popular setback blower (supercharger).

I'm for whatever Dick LaHaie thinks will make our car run well and win races, Dixon said. If we make the right calls on race days and gain knowledge with each run from the data we gather, we should be fine.

Dixon, who has raced to three victories and two No. 1 qualifying positions in Gator country, will reach another milestone if he qualifies for the 35th running of NHRA's first East Coast race on the 23-race schedule. Dixon enters the event having competed in 499 rounds of competition. The Indianapolis driver hopes to surpass round win No. 500 and get to career round No. 503 on Sunday, March 21.

I don't really care about the 500th round, Dixon said. We don't get any extra points from POWERade and it's not the most rounds in the history of drag racing. I'm focused on qualifying at Gainesville, then hopefully getting to round No. 503 that Sunday.

If Dixon obtains career victory No. 34 and moves within one win of equaling drag racing legend "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, Gainesville Raceway will continue to be one race track Dixon considers a bit more special than the rest.

DICK LAHAIE Q&A

Ted Yerzyk, Don Prudhomme Snake Racing

VISTA, Calif. (March 15, 2004) Dick LaHaie is arguably the most respected professional tuner in the sport of drag racing. The Michigan resident won the 1987 NHRA Top Fuel championship at the final event of the season in Pomona, Calif. following a season-long battle with rival Joe Amato. Since retiring from driving in 1991, LaHaie has tuned both Scott Kalitta (1994-95) and Larry Dixon (2002-03) to consecutive NHRA Top Fuel championships. The five-time champion got his start in drag racing in 1958 piloting a 1948 Mercury. He started driving nitromethane-powered dragsters in 1962. In this candid Q&A discussion, LaHaie talks about his early days in drag racing, why he left the sport, his initial conversation with Don ?the Snake? Prudhomme about coming to work for Snake Racing, and how Dixon has grown as a person and driver.

Q: You grew up 90 minutes from the Motor City (Detroit) in Lansing, Mich. Were you involved in the muscle car era, racing on Woodward Ave. and that scene?

LAHAIE: I raced on the street in the early days of drag racing in the late 1950s. I never had a muscle car. I always had hot rods that could beat the muscle cars. I had a ?56 Ford Coupe and in 1958 I went down to the Chevrolet dealer and bought a brand new Corvette motor and four speed transmission and put it in the Ford and I?d go race the Corvettes and those cars and just whip them. I did some street racing. I shouldn?t have done it, but everybody did it back then, but once I started racing on the drag strip that was it. I started running fuel cars in 1962. It?s pretty hard to run them on the street. Every now and then we?d pull the car out of the shop and start it on the street, but we?d drive it back into the shop.

Q: Why did you decide to retire from driving in 1991?

LAHAIE: I drove for 33 years. I was over it. I was fed up with the politics in the sport. I didn?t like the way that the sport was going at that time. Just having to deal with not only sponsors, but the media, along with being both a crew chief and a driver, I got tired. I felt like anytime someone has done something for 33 years that they should be able to walk away from it and not feel bad about it.

Q: Did you have any second thoughts or reservations about not driving any longer?

LAHAIE: When I decided to quit, I woke up one morning and decided that I don?t need to do this any more. That was it. I made the decision right after Indy in 1991 to retire from driving.

Q: How difficult was it to be team owner, driver and tuner of a car?

LAHAIE: When we first started, that?s the way it was done. As the sport progressed, we needed more and more people to work on the cars. We had semi trailers to get around the country. We had sponsors to deal with and make appearances on their behalf. It got to a point where it got to be a lot of responsibility. It was time to think about doing something else.

Q: You first crew chief job was tuning Scott Kalitta?s dragster in the early to mid 1990s. How did you join Kalitta Racing?

LAHAIE: I?ve known Connie (Kalitta) for over 30 years. We?ve been friends for a long time. I had been retired for a couple years and he called me and said, ?Hey, why don?t you come down and run my kid?s (Scott Kalitta) race team.? I said, ?No, I don?t think that would be a good idea. You and I have been friends for a long time.? Connie invited me to lunch and I went to the shop and we talked. I looked at his cars and they weren?t what we needed. Connie was pretty proud of them and it?s pretty hard to tell someone they?ve got an ugly baby. He ended up giving me full control. I told him it would cost him more than $1 million to run this team. He said, ?I spent $2 million last year.? We kicked it around for a while and finally I took it over in the winter of 1992. I had never been a crew chief. I didn?t even know where to stand on the starting line. We put some guys together and ran the season and finished No. 2. We didn?t have a real stellar year, but we qualified No. 1 seven times in 1993. We only won one race. We ran the fastest speed in the history of the sport at 308 mph, which was five mph faster than anybody had run at that time. We had a good year. I think the 1994-95 seasons kind of speak for themselves when we won the two championships. Then we came back in 1996 and finished No. 2 again. The team and driver were just kind of ho-hum and it really pissed me off. I told those guys it would be the team itself that destroys itself. Some of the crew members felt that they could not pay attention and not stay focused and still win. And, some of the guys on the team did stay focused, but there were three of four that dragged the rest of us down. I also felt that Scott didn?t want to drive any longer. So, one day in April of 1997, I gathered everyone together and said, ?I don?t need to be here.? After that, I took the rest of the 1997 season off before going to work for Doug Herbert in 1998. I started with Prudhomme in the fall of 1999.

Q: When Don Prudhomme approached you about tuning the Miller Lite dragster, what was your reaction?

LAHAIE: He said, ?I?d like to have you come work for me.? I said, ?I don?t think we can Snake, I don?t think it would work?. He said, ?Why not?? And I said, ?Well, I never liked you.? And he said, ?I never wanted to go to dinner with you either.? That was great. I think we got off on the right foot. I?ve got a lot of respect for him and he respects me. He knows how hard I think and try to scheme and make this the best team out here. He?s the same way. There?s a competitiveness in both of us. So, it?s worked out pretty well.

Q: Why do you feel the relationship with Prudhomme has worked so well?

LAHAIE: I think it has worked because he leaves me alone and I don?t go to him with every petty issue. I know he?s got a lot to do and deal with. He doesn?t need to know the day-to-day b.s. that we have to put up with. He supplies us with everything we need. He?s always asking if there?s anything we need? Anything that he can help us out with he supplies. He?s been very easy to work with.

Q: What has been your biggest thrill as a tuner?

LAHAIE: I would say the two championships with Larry have been the most dominant. In 2002 we led the thing wire-to-wire. I think had we not crashed at Bristol (Tenn.) last year, we?d have led the thing two years in a row wire-to-wire. We lost it for one week basically. That was a pretty scary crash we had at Bristol and to bounce back and to win the next race a week later and just continue on like nothing ever happened said a lot about the team. They are dedicated to winning races and championships.

Q: You mentioned how some of the crew members at the Kalitta camp lost focus after winning consecutive championships. Is that an issue you?ve addressed with the Miller Lite crew before the 2004 season?

LAHAIE: I had a talk with them a couple weeks back and we assessed a few things. They have to realize that we?ve had an excellent combination the past few years. We rode that thing for three years. We had a very fast car and a very dependable car. It did everything we wanted it to do. But, times have changed and we have to change with the times. It takes time to sort things out. It?s really hard to keep a team up for as long as they have been. When things start going the other way, it starts crumbling real quick. When you?re not winning races, that really tells you what the team is all about. Everyone likes to win races.

Q: You have a nine-member crew this season. When you won the 1987 Top Fuel title, you had a very small crew. What was it like to travel around the country with your family and win the NHRA championship?

LAHAIE: In 1987 it was my daughter Kim (Richards), my son Jeff, and me. We had some people come in and help us every now and then. It was very special because nobody else had ever done that. I think it brought us to a point in our lives that there was always a special bond. That was something that you can only dream about. It was very cool to accomplish. To this day, it?s probably been the highlight of my life.

Q: Now, you and Kim compete at the race track. Has your relationship remained as strong since she became the assistant crew chief for arguably your biggest rival?

LAHAIE: She?s my daughter. She?ll always be my daughter. The red car is just another red car. Tim (Richards), her husband, and I have been friends a long, long time. He?s won a lot of championships. As far as a competitive level, sure, it?s there. As soon as we pull the wires off the car, we?re after the throat, but they are too. As soon as we make the run, it?s all back to business as normal.

Q: What do you enjoy more, driving or tuning a dragster?

LAHAIE: Driving is an entirely different sensation. For excitement, I prefer the tuning part of it. The driving is competitiveness; it?s you and the guy next to you. As far as being a crew chief and tuning the car goes, the first time I stood on the starting line and we put a good number on the board and I heard all the people cheer. I looked around and thought what is that for? I didn?t know. I had never experienced that. When you?re in the race car and at the top end after you make a pass, there are two or three people there and it?s no big deal. It makes a chill run through me to see Snake or Connie Kalitta when the car posts a good number. To see how excited they get; I get a lot of satisfaction from that. And the crew, they get pretty emotional. I don?t get that emotional I guess.

Q: You?re known for your consistency to get down the race track, especially on a hot, sticky race track. Do you take pride in that?

LAHAIE: First off, you have to deal with it. Everyone has to deal with it. I take a lot of pride in it because it means winning races and that?s what I take pride in. It doesn?t matter if it is 40 degrees or 140 degrees, you want to win. We haven?t done very well on cold race tracks and other cars go out and just fly on cold tracks. I would like to have a combination to win on hot, cold or medium tracks. A combination to win on all of them, which I think we?re working towards. And, we have won on cool race tracks, but we don?t put up the stellar numbers. One thing I won?t do is quit. I keep working on things and try to make them better.

Q: How have you seen Larry (Dixon) grow as a driver since your arrival to the team?

LAHAIE: When I got here, he was emotionally drained. He had no self satisfaction. He didn?t feel he could do anything right. It took us about a year to come back out and flex our muscles. He and his wife (Allison) have had two babies (Donovan and Alanna). Larry has grown as a person and he?s learned a lot of the ins and outs of drag racing. He?s told me that the best thing that ever happened to him was when we lost the championship in 2001 because he learned how to deal with it. You have to grow in this sport. It wasn?t like when I started and you were 20 years old doing this. He?s living his dream. It?s a good thing.

Q: Is the competition in 2004 the toughest you?ve seen in recent years?

LAHAIE: It?s just at a quicker level now. There are a lot of quick cars out there. Kalitta owns three of them. The Army car (Tony Schumacher), (Joe) Amato?s car, (Brandon) Bernstein, there?s a good eight car field out there with very quick cars. Maybe the competition has closed up a little bit. It?s probably going to be the toughest year to win.

Q: With that being said, if you win a third consecutive title, would this one be the sweetest?

LAHAIE: Oh yeah, no doubt. If we can pull it off and win it again, yeah. Most everyone thinks we won the championships because we came right out of the gate winning races. We won lots of races quickly and then coasted along. Well, that is true to a point, but I never liked doing it the way we did the past few years. I hated it. You started looking over your shoulder after the first race, and it?s tough. It really is. You start making decisions on how to not lose any ground instead of being aggressive and that?s how I won all my other championships, to really come after it. So, I would like to think we could do that again ? to keep the pressure on the opponents.

Q: Last season you won by such a large margin that many of the other teams were testing new engine and clutch combinations for this year. You changed your combinations with a new clutch, cylinder heads and supercharger. You didn?t have much track time to test. Do you feel you?re slightly behind?

LAHAIE: Sure, I feel we?re behind a little bit. However, I have confidence in what this team can do. I?m not the type of person to ever throw in the towel. I really don?t want our car to be a generic car like everyone else. Our chassis isn?t like every other team in the sport. I want to keep our own identity. We?ll work with that and see what happens.

Q: Following the Winternationals, you made the switch to the setback blower. What was the decision behind that?

LAHAIE: A couple different things. We were going down a different route. Something happened to our car after testing at Phoenix. I?m not quite sure it was the combination. You don?t have to hit your thumb very many times with a hammer to realize you need to change something. I got to looking at the top eight cars and we?re the only one running a standard placement blower. I called Snake and said those blowers setback makes everyone a tuner. He said, ?When everyone had the blower where you had yours, you were better than everybody else. So, I have the confidence that if you set the blower back you?ll run better again.? It?s that type of confidence that he has in me and the respect that I have in him that makes all this click.
