NEW EGYPT, NJ APRIL 17, 2004 . . . . Curt Michael of Ocean View, Delaware won
the twenty-five lap URC Advance Auto Parts sprint car feature event on Saturday
night at the New Egypt Speedway. But in the exciting closing laps, all eyes were
on Dave McGough, Chris Coyle, Dave Ely and Mike Haggenbottom they wrestled lap
by lap for position. Coyle, driving the Kennedy/Turpin sprinter turned a few
laps of rim-riding that brought the crowd to their feet as Dave McGough worked
the low groove, nipping Coyle to earn the runner-up spot. The battle between
McGough and Coyle, opened the door for defending champion Dave Ely and former
champion Mike Haggenbottom to reel in the leaders. The competition ran short of
time as Michael took the victory, his first of the season and nineteenth career
URC win.
A field of thirty-three URC sprint cars turned out for the second event of
the URC campaign and the second race of the Fred's Trailer Parts Center New
Jersey Sprint Series. Heat race events were won by Kramer Williamson, Gary
Gollub and Dave Gable as Josh Weller came home the winner of the "B"
Main event.
A field of twenty-five URC sprint cars took the green flag in the twenty-five
lap feature event. Before the first lap was complete, Cliff Brian spun in turn
two, displaying the first caution flag of the race. On the restart, Chris Coyle
gunned into an early lead was Dave McGough in the hunt. Jason Clauss stopped on
the apron of the speedway and the yellow flag was waiving again, this time on
lap three.
Coyle and McGough returned to their battle for the lead when green flag
racing resumed, but once again, the yellow was displayed when Brian Seidel and
Jon Eldreth tangled in turn four. With the green light back on, Coyle and
McGough now had Curt Michael, Ed Aikin and Mike Haggenbottom in the top five. On
lap nine, Michael moved into second and began to hunt down Coyle who was using
the outside groove to thrill the fans with each passing lap.
A slight brush with the first time wall and Coyle opened the door for Curt
Michael to make an inside move to take the lead. At the halfway sign, Michael
has a scant lead with Coyle second followed by a persistent Dave McGough as
Haggenbottom and Aikin followed in the top five.
Sean Michael of Allentown, PA and winner of the 2004 URC season opener at the
Bridgeport Speedway, was involved in a tangle in his heat race and was forced to
qualify through the "B" Main. Michael was on charge and even with an
ill-handling sprint car, he was racing in the top ten on lap fifteen. Michael
finished a strong seventh.
At the front of the pack, Michael was on top, maintaining a three car length
lead over runner-up Dave McGough and third place Chris Coyle. McGough began to
close in on the leader but Chris Coyle was once again building momentum in the
high and wide outside lane. Just as the leaders found themselves in slower
traffic, the yellow was displayed on lap nineteen for Justin Collett. With just
six laps remaining, a thrilling finish was sure to climax this event.
Curt Michael took the green flag as Coyle passed McGough for second. With
just five laps remaining, Coyle was now challenging Michael for the lead as
McGough brought the company of Mike Haggenbottom and Dave Ely to party. Five
cars were now racing for the win as Michael set the pace with McGough and Coyle
in a dog-fight for second with Haggenbottom and Ely just off the pace.
On the white flag lap, Ely moved into fourth as Coyle attempted to set-up for
the last lap pass for the lead. McGough slipped by Coyle to finish second with
Dave Ely fourth and Mike Haggenbottom fifth.
