SPEEDROME "OPEN WHEEL WEDNESDAYS" DEBUT
The Blossom Chevrolet Indianapolis Speedrome opens its 2004 USAC "Open
Wheel Wednesday" slate this week, kicking off the season with events
offering points toward four different series championships.
After a four-year hiatus, USAC returns to the 1/5-mile paved oval for three
50-lappers involving the Speedrome Regional Midgets, Kenyon Midgets and the
Midwest and Speedrome Ford Focus Midgets. Practice starts at 5 pm and racing is
scheduled to begin at 7.
Offering 250 laps of racing every Wednesday night, the Speedrome gives
entry-level racers a great venue to hone their skills, while giving race fans an
economical night of family fun. A total of 16 "tripleheaders" are on
tap, all on Wednesdays, except for the May 27 "Rich Vogler Night"
program, which is Carburetion Night, the Thursday prior to the Indianapolis 500.
Defending "open-wheel" champions at the Speedrome are Sondi Eden
(Midgets) and Brian Clawson (Kenyon Midgets), while Robbie Ray won last year's
Indiana Ford Focus Midget title.
Trenton Darland, son of USAC Triple Crown Champion Dave Darland, currently
leads the USAC Midwest Ford Focus standings going into the Speedrome opener.
Coupled with the "Big M Motorfest" USAC races in Memphis, Tenn.
Friday and Saturday, the Speedrome "tripleheader" kicks off a week
where race fans have an opportunity to see participants compete for six
different USAC championships on three completely different types of tracks and
surfaces. The Weld Racing Silver Crown Cars are at the 3/4-mile Memphis
Motorsports Park pavement on Saturday afternoon, following Friday night's
Valvoline National Sprint Car and Midwest Ford Focus Midget racing on the
complex's 1/4-mile dirt track.
Among returning champions at the Speedrome this Wednesday are USAC's last
Regional Midget king, Daryl Campbell, who won the 2000 crown, and 1999 champ
John Sluss, who halted Michael Lang's domination with a sensational charge to
the title in the final race.
Lang is the all-time leader in terms of Speedrome USAC Midget wins, with 54.
He won five Speedrome titles, including four in a row from 1994-1997. In 1996
Lang established the consistency mark at the Speedrome, winning six consecutive
feature events!
