World of Outlaws Late Model Series Fines Hill

By WoO LMS Public Relations NORMAN, OK (April 28, 2004) – The World of Outlaws Late Model Series has fined Vic Hill for physically assaulting Dirt Dozen member Steve Francis during the March 27th race at Volunteer Speedway.

Hill was fined a total of $1,000. He will pay the first $100 at his next World of Outlaws Late Model Series race, and $900 will be deducted from his winnings. The series trusts this penalty will discourage drivers from physical confrontations with other competitors.

The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will donate the funds received from the fine to the charity of Hill’s choice. Hill said he will pay the fine at Friday’s Hoosier Tires Hoosier 60 World of Outlaws Late Model Series event at Smoky Mountain Speedway.

Smoky Mountain Speedway April 30th

By Brian Dunlap WoO LMS Public Relations Maryville, TN (April 27, 2004) The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will return to Tennessee to race the Hoosier Tires Hoosier 60 event at Smoky Mountain Speedway Friday, April 30th. Coming from a weekend of record crowds, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series Dirty Dozen will battle for a purse of more than $42,000 on Smoky Mountain Speedway’s 4/10th mile track.

Smoky Mountain Speedway owner and promoter Denny Garner is excited about hosting this action packed event at his facility. “The World of Outlaws Dirty Dozen are the professional drivers in dirt late model racing, and having them paired up with our talent of local drivers including Gusty Christenberry, Mark Vineyard, and Mark Douglas will make for one of the best shows in the area,” remarked Garner.

Gusty Christenberry a two-time Smoky Mountain Speedway track champion will be driving for his father Clayton Christenberry in the Hoosier 60.

“There will be some stiff competition with guys like Scott Bloomquist and the Dirty Dozen on the track. We have run some big races before and if every thing goes well we hope to be running up front at the end,” said Christenberry. “Smoky Mountain Speedway is a real nice track and has been very racy, we should see some fast qualifying times and a real good main event.”

Dirty Dozen driver Dale McDowell comes into this event leading the World of Outlaws Late Model series point race by only seven points over Scott Bloomquist. Joining McDowell and Bloomquist in the World of Outlaws Dirty Dozen are drivers Bart Hartman (75), Steve Francis (15), Rick Eckert (24), Dan Schlieper (9), Billy Moyer (21), Clint Smith (44), Mike Balzano (E1), Chub Frank (1), Darrell Lanigan (29), and Rick Aukland (12). Friday’s exciting action-packed event will feature time trials, heat races and a star filled 60-lap $10,000 to-win main event. The gates will open at 4:00 p.m., and racing starts at 7:00 p.m.

Ticket information for the April 30th event can be found on the Smoky Mountain Speedway web site at www.smokymountainspeedway.com .

North Georgia Speedway May 1st

By Brian Dunlap WoO LMS Public Relations Chattsworth, GA (April 28, 2004) The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will kick off the month of May with a trip to Chattsworth, Georgia to race at North Georgia Speedway. Saturday May 1st, after their Friday night appearance in Maryville, Tennessee, the World of Outlaws Dirty Dozen will make the trip to Georgia to race the 2nd Annual Peach State Dirt-y Classic.

In addition to the $42,000 purse, North Georgia Speedway owner Mike Lee is offering “Mike's Madd Money $10,000 Qualifying Challenge.” Lee is offering a $10,000 bonus to the first Late Model that can qualify with a lap in the 11 second bracket.

“We have been offering this bonus at every race this season and there is a lot of speculation that we will pay it out at this event” remarked Lee.” We are really looking forward to having the World of Outlaws Late Model series and the Dirty Dozen racing at our track.”

Twelve-time North Georgia Speedway track champion Gary McPherson is eager to compete at this event.

“These boys (the Dirty Dozen) are tough, I feel we are right there with the equipment we have and if we are able to turn a good qualifying lap then we will hopefully be in a position to run up front in the main event,” commented McPherson when asked about the race and his goals. “It’s great to be given a chance to compete with the traveling guys at our local track.”

The World of Outlaws Late Model series point leader and Dirty Dozen member Dale McDowell is no stranger to this track either as he won the track’s 3rd annual Coca-Cola Classic event held in March of this year.

“The track is only 30 minuets from our race shop and I feel that it is one of the raciest tracks in the area,” remarked McDowell. “There will be a lot of good cars there making the competition level very high; it should be a great show for the fans.”

Joining McDowell in the 2004 World of Outlaws Dirty Dozen line-up are Scott Bloomquist (0), Bart Hartman (75), Steve Francis (15), Rick Eckert (24), Billy Moyer (21), Mike Balzano (E1), Clint Smith (44), Dan Schlieper (9), Chub Frank (1), Darrell Lanigan (29), and Rick Aukland (12). Also traveling with the Dirty Dozen is the World of Outlaw Late Model series rookie of the year contenders Tim McCreadie (39), John Blankenship (23), and Scott James (83).

This action-packed event will feature time trials, heat races, and an edge-of-your-seat 60-lap $10,000 to win main event. The gates will open at 3:00 p.m. racing will start at 7:00 p.m. Ticket information for the May 1st event can be found on the North Georgia Speedway web site at www.northgeorgiaspeedway.com  or by calling the track at (706) 695-3313.

ECKERT SCORES FIRST WoO LATE MODEL WIN

By Stan Dillon

(April 24, 2004) HAGERSTOWN, MD..... Two-time national champion Rick Eckert from York, PA returned to his home track Saturday night to score his first World of Outlaws Late Model Series win in the 50-lap Stanley Schetrompf Memorial at the Hagerstown Speedway. Eckert, who earned $10,000 for his 15th career win at Hagerstown, was the ninth different late model winner in nine races held this year at the popular half-mile oval.

"I didn't know whether I was ever going to get a WoO win," said Eckert, 38, who posted a pair of runner-up finishes when the Outlaw LM Series was christened at Volusia (Fla.) Speedway Park in February. "It's nice coming home and winning this before my hometown fans. They even brought my 93-year old grandfather, who isn't in good health, to watch tonight. It was a thrill to win with him here."

Eckert started on the outside-pole aboard his familiar orange no. 24 Raye Vest Rocket and quickly pulled away to a 10 car-length lead by the third lap with pole-sitter and dash winner Scott Bloomquist in pursuit. Steve Francis took over second when Bloomquist brought out the caution on lap seven and was able to stay within striking distance of the leader.

Francis closed in on Eckert's bumper on the 15th lap but 'Scrub' was able to open up a five-car length advantage as the leaders began to put the slower cars a lap down on the 23rd circuit. Francis closed in on the leader on lap 27 as Eckert approached two lapped cars racing side-by-side and even pulled in front going down the backstretch, but Eckert was able to put his nose in front when the two cars finished lap 28 and was back in front when the second and final caution was waved on lap 29.

Eckert set the pace on the restart and was able to maintain a comfortable10 car-length lead over Francis the rest of the way to score his first win in round number 11 of the new World of Outlaw Late Model Series.

"I wanted to win the dash too, but I am glad that Bloomquist won," Eckert added. "He made me go in and work on my car because I knew I definitely needed to get better. Robby (Allen, crew chief) and I came to the conclusion about the things we had to do to get better and made some changes that made us better than we were in the dash, that's for sure."

Third-place starter Francis settled for the runner-up spot for the second time in as many nights. "We're happy with it," said Francis, who chased Chub Frank across the line Friday night in the A-Main staged at Lernerville (Pa.) Speedway. "We thought we had a run at him (Eckert) in lapped traffic, but Rick was a little bit better in the open and I think we were a little bit better in traffic. But it was still a good race and a good weekend. The track was excellent, probably the best we've ever seen this place. Randy (Grove) always has this place right, it was just racy."

Bart Hartman held off seventh-starting Chub Frank for third after setting fast-time of 18.639 seconds in time trials while Brian Birkhofer rounded out the top-five.

"We changed the car quite a bit from the heat race," Hartman said. "The track was good as usual. You could race all over it, bottom, top or the middle. It was racy as usual. I can't say enough about Rocket Chassis, Cornett Motors, Imler Poultry, Hoosier Racing Tires. We just needed to get a little bit better. We had a third place car evidently."

Dale McDowell was next with Bloomquist coming from the rear of the field for seventh after changing tires on the seventh lap. Randall Chupp placed eighth with 18th starting Donnie Moran ninth and 17th starting Mike Balzano completing the top-ten.

The World of Outlaws Late Model Series makes a return trip to Tennessee for it's debut at Smokey Mountain Speedway in Marysville on Friday, April 30. “CHUBZILLA” THROWS DOWN IN SARVER

By Chris Marquart

(April 23, 2004) SARVER, PA..... Third-place finisher Dale McDowell followed runner-up Steve Francis into the press room above Lernerville Speedway. McDowell no sooner breezed through the door before he made quick eye contact with Chub Frank, sitting with a content grin in the middle of the head table, occupying the seat reserved for the victor.

"Congratulations, Chub!" McDowell proclaimed.

McDowell, a two-time feature winner this season, offered a pat on the back and well wishes as he took his seat at Frank's left. Francis sat to Frank's right.

"Thank you," Frank replied, his smile widening and head nodding gently.

Frank emerged atop a four-car battle that raged over every last inch of Lernerville's smooth-as-glass, slick-as-ice half-miler, taking the lead with three to go and holding off eventual runners-up Francis and McDowell, Brian Birkhofer and a fast-advancing Rick Eckert.

"I can't believe we're here," Frank said. I didn't think we would get here because of all the stuff that was going on."

Late last month, a fire leveled Frank's Pennsylvania race shop. His mother, Janet, fell ill and without the help of his cousin Rich Briggs, Frank said that the team would probably be nowhere near competitive.

"This win is dedicated to my mom," Frank said. "The cards and e-mails and all the fan support has been amazing. I never thought we would be back in victory lane this quick. But I guess we should win now. In the long run is where the loss will hurt us. We won't be able to keep up the maintenance.

"To win in my home state, this is pretty special."

Friday night's race was calculated Chubzilla. Benefiting from hard tires that came on strong during a long green flag run, Frank stalked his prey and pounced on the lead with just three laps to go. In the final tours, Steve Francis and McDowell looked for a way past, but the No. *1 was on a roll.

"I waited and waited for Chub to make a mistake," Francis said. "We've done this a hundred times and I know that Chub doesn't make a mistakes. And if he does, he doesn't do it twice.

"I was hoping that he would try to ride Brian and Dale wide and open a door for me on the inside. He's a professional. It wasn't going to happen."

Francis followed Frank through the field over the final 15 laps, riding with Frank as the duo tried to overtake the lapped cars of John Blankenship and Rick Aukland. When they finally cleared the two lapped cars ---WoO LMS Rules do not include a move over flag for the lapped traffic--- Frank set his sights on the leaders and Francis set his sights on Frank.

"I was too far back, but Dale slipped real hard off turn four and held up Brian and that got me to them. It messed both of them up and it really got me the win," Frank said.

"Really, I didn't realize we were running them down," Francis said. "We were racing each other so hard. Then, I looked over and I saw Birkhofer under him, and there was McDowell. I figured, sure enough, we'll catch them all and have a big race at the end."

At one point, Francis said he was four-wide for the lead off the fourth turn. Frank poked his nose past McDowell in traffic on lap 47. Though the pressure was on, Frank would not release the point.

"On an open track I think I would have been fine," McDowell said. "I had trouble maneuvering in traffic and it got us."

McDowell was showing the way as pole-sitter Brian Birkhofer tried to find a line past. Birkhofer lead two-thirds of the race from the front row before McDowell was able to muscle a way past in lapped traffic.

"I was able to race with him," McDowell said. "Brian was in his line and I was in mine. Things just worked out."

McDowell found runs on the low side off turn two, drawing even with Birkhofer. Still, Birkhofer had more momentum on the high side and was able to hold the lead. The top two caught the lapped cars of Ken Schaltenbrand and Ryan Markham. Schaltenbrand was holding Markham off on the high groove; the same line used by Birkhofer. Birkhofer moved to the middle of the speedway and McDowell drove under him off the second turn and was credited as the leader of lap 32.

McDowell looked comfortable, riding on the point for a handful of laps before coming under Birkhofer's fire.

"We sort of missed on the set-up," McDowell said. "We didn't anticipate it getting slick at the end. I couldn't steer through lapped traffic the last 10 laps like I could early.

"It was pushing and you have to slow down more in the corners. I couldn't maneuver. In open track, I would have been fine."

With less than 10 tours remaining, McDowell was struggling to hold Birkhofer at bay. The tacky speedway began to glaze over at the halfway mark, leaving slick spots that accentuated the ills of a poor handling car. McDowell's nose-heavy No. 17M pushed through the fourth turn, twisting from under him and forcing him to slow. In turn, Birkhofer was left no choice but to check up.

Frank and Francis were almost a half-straightaway behind yet the bobble allowed them to close in on the lead pair.

With five to go, Chub drove hard into the third turn, sticking the No. *1 to the inside and took over the second spot. Francis secured third from Birkhofer the following circuit. Frank led lap 47 while the rest of the pack battled for real racing room. Birkhofer fell to fourth and Francis wheeled under McDowell.

Francis said his car was better in the middle, but knew that would not produce a run past Frank. There were two main grooves on the track, on the bottom against the inside berm and up on the cushion. The middle lane was still "open" clay and had not slicked over as the other lanes. Beyond that, Chub could barely shake the advances of McDowell and Birkhofer.

"My car was more consistent on the bottom and I had to hope (Frank) would slide out and turn sideways so I would have a run on him," Francis said.

That happened off the second turn three times. Francis had driven into the corner too hard, hoping to gain ground on Frank. When Frank slid off the inside, Francis could only follow in his tire tracks.

"I wish this was a 60 lapper," Francis said. "It would've been interesting to see."

Frank stayed on the bottom while McDowell rode high. Francis pulled to a convincing second on the final lap, relegating McDowell to third. Birkhofer placed fourth ahead of Rick Eckert, who started the feature in 17th and clawed his way into the top-five.

"You just had to run where they weren't," Frank said. "We beat them at the end. I guess that's the idea, just beat 'em at the end."

PIT NOTES: Scott Bloomquist suffered a flat tire on lap 19. He returned without losing a lap, improving to 11th in the final order... Top 'Rookie of the Year' contender and current first-year points leader Tim McCreadie time trialed 7th fastest and went on to win his heat, besting both quick qualifier Rick Aukland and Steve Francis. Smoke seeped from the rear quarter of McCreadie's No. 39 following the heat and the Sweeteners' Plus team replaced the engine. McCreadie missed the top-six dash and deferred to sixth on the starting grid. McCreadie was plagued by troubles the rest of the night and was ultimately credited with 23rd... Dave Lyon had the bell housing shatter on board his no. 14. Parts came through the floorboard and struck his ankle...Rising star Josh Richards made the WoO LMS field, starting 23rd. Richards, just 16 years old, ran well in his heat but luck vacated his No. 1 and he was left to finish the feature 27th...The top finishing Lernerville regular was David Scott, placing 7th. Scott started 18th on the grid following a hard charge in his heat. He moved into the third and final qualifying spot in the sixth heat, making a remarkable run from mid-pack.

By Brian Dunlap,
WoO LMS Public Relations

Kilgore, TX (April 17, 2004) -- The World of Outlaws Late Model series returned to Lone star Speedway Saturday for a second night of non-stop action packed racing. This time, it was Dirty Dozen driver Bret Hartman that was able to walk away with the win and a check for $12,000.

Hartman set the fast time of the night and weekend with a 16.297 lap and was able to lead every lap of the feature with his Sev Bent Calf Ranches Rocket Chassis Grand Prix. “Things really fell in to place, we set fast time and won our heat race, in the dash we finished second which left us with a good starting position for the feature (outside poll)” remarked Hartman.

Hartman took the lead with the initial green flag, but was forced to restart due to a caution flag brought out by Darrell Lanigan spinning in turn four. When the green flag flew for the second time, Hartman took the lead in turn four as Steve Francis went low in to turns one and two moving into second and passing Billy Moyer and Tim McCreadie.

Going in to lap three the running order was Hartman, Francis, Moyer, Frank, Bloomquist, Balzano, and McCreadie had fallen back to 8th position. Racing remained tight as Francis went low and pulled up alongside of Hartman on lap seven, challenging him for the lead. At the same time Bloomquist was turning up the heat on Frank fighting for 4th position.

By lap ten Hartman was into lap traffic, but was able to maintain his lead. Frank and Bloomquist passed Moyer, taking third and forth positions respectively. On the next lap Rick Eckert went low in turns one and two passing Moyer and moving in to 5th position and behind Bloomquist.

Lap 14 brought out the caution as Bobby Russell spun in turn two. Upon the restart Balzano got into the back of Eckert lifting the back end of his car into the air.

The caution flag flew once again on lap 17 as Eckert was stopped in turn two due to complications stemming from the incident with Balzano on the previous restart. Frank moved into second position as Francis pulled off the track due to a belt failure.

By lap 22 Hartman had pulled away from the field again and had gained an 8 car length lead over Frank. Friday night’s feature winner Dale McDowell had also been able to work his way up from 23rd position to 9th position.

By the half way point in the race, Hartman was leading the field by a straight away.

On lap 26 McDowell got past Ron Litton and moved in to 8th position, and on lap 31 passed Clint Smith moving on up to 7th position.

As the race neared completion Frank backed off conserving his tires allowing Balzano and Duke Whiseant to close on himself and Bloomquist. Bloomquist put pressure on Frank, but was unable to get around him before the race was completed at 50 laps.

“Hartman’s team had done their homework and had hit the right set up, we were a little to too soft on the tires to be able to challenge him for the win” remarked Frank. Frank who has recently suffered a devastating fire at his race shop in Pennsylvania was happy to come away from Texas with a good finish. “I just wanted to thank all of the fans, drivers, and Boundless Motor Sports officials for their overwhelming support after the fire” noted Frank.

The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will make there next appearance April 23rd in Sarver, Pennsylvania at Lernerville Speedway. Ticket information can be found on the Lernerville Speedway web site at www.lernerville.com, or you can call Lernerville Speedway directly at (724) 353-1511.

STAR SHINES BRIGHT FOR MCDOWELL

By Brian Dunlap,
WoO LMS Public Relations

Kilgore, TX (April 16, 2004) -- The World of Outlaw Late Model series traveled to Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas Friday night for heart-stopping, mud-slinging night of action. It was series points leader Dale McDowell that was able to emerge from the race with his second series win of the 2004 season.

McDowell proved he was the man to beat when he took the lead with his Larry Shaw Racetek engines Pontiac coming off of turn four at the start of the race and led every lap their after. “We had a little luck in the draw and started up front in the dash, which left us with a good starting position in the feature and we were able to pull it off” stated McDowell. With regards to his points lead McDowell remarked “We are leading the series points by slim margin against some tough competition so every race and every win counts.”

Starting on the pole, Ronny Adams brought the field around to take the green flag followed by McDowell, Darrell Lanigan, Steve Francis, Scott Bloomquist, Bart Hartman, and the rest of the 25 car starting lineup.

On lap 2 Bloomquist was able to run his car low in to turn 2 making a move on and taking forth position away from Darrell Lanigan. By lap 3 McDowell had began to open up a significant 10 car lead as Bloomquist began pressuring Francis for third position.

By lap 10 McDowell had worked his way up to the lap traffic, he was unphased as he was able to pass Aukland and maintain his lead. McDowell was soon able to pull away from the field and build a straightaway lead by lap 15.

Going in to lap 16, Francis, Bloomquist, and Lanigan hand began to close in on Adams. By lap 20, the four cars were racing nose to tail looking for any opportunity to pass each other. Francis began to apply serious pressure to Adams, challenging him for second position.

Lap 26 brought out the caution flag do to Duke Whiseant’s car stopping on the race track. When the Lone Star Speedway flagman dropped the green flag McDowell once again jumped out and pulled away from the field building a 6 car length lead over Adams.

Bloomquist began to put the heat on Francis, challenging him for third position, trying high and low to get around him. With Bloomquist hot on his heals, Francis was unable to challenge Adams for second. McDowell crossed the finish line with ¾ straight away lead, and collected a check for $5,000 for his troubles. The World of Outlaws Late Model series returns to Lone Star Speedway Saturday night for final show of the weekend featuring a 12,000 to win main event. CLINT SMITH JOINS DIRTY DOZEN

By Brian Dunlap,
WoO LMS Public Relations

NORMAN, OK (March 31, 2004) -- The World of Outlaws Late Model Series welcomed Clint Smith as the newest member of the Dirty Dozen Saturday night at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, TN.

The announcement was made Saturday that Wendell Wallace would be unable to complete the full season with the World of Outlaws due to a lack of help and financial support. Wallace does however plan to run a limited World of Outlaws Late Model schedule for the remainder of the season.

“The Outlaws are a great bunch of guys and are headed in the right direction,” Wallace stated with regards to his experience with the organization. “The World of Outlaws is going to take Late Model racing to the next level”.

Boundless Motor Sports Racing, Inc., Chief Operating Officer Bobby Hartslief commented that Wallace would be missed as member of the Dirty Dozen.

“From the outset we looked at our relationship with the Dirty Dozen drivers as business partners. When business partners find them selves in a difficult situation, others step in to help. Wendell came to us last week and discussed his problems with being able to run the full schedule. The Dirty Dozen drivers and myself had a meeting and discussed how resolve the problem. After taking a look at the championship points table we determined that Clint Smith would be the logical replacement for Wendell as a member of the Dirty Dozen. Clint accepted the offer, and we relieved Wendell of his contractual duties,” said Hartslief.

The former Hav-A-Tampa champion and 4 time Southern All-Star Series champion Clint Smith is coming off of a strong season last year with 9 feature wins and 45 top ten finishes. Following Saturday’s race, Smith is currently 6th in the 2004 World of Outlaws Late Model Series points.

“I feel honored and fortunate to be able to race my way in to the Dirty Dozen and be given the opportunity to fill the vacancy left by Wallace,” remarked Smith. “The World of Outlaws is a very professional organization made up of the best promoters and the best dirt racers in the country and I am very proud to have the opportunity to be a part of it”

Smith will race his JP Drilling Rocket Chassis Monty Carlo Late Model along with the rest of the Dirty Dozen at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas April 16th and 17th. Ticket information for the April 16th and 17th events can be found on the Lone Star Speedway web site at http://www.lonestarspeedway.net , or you can call Lone Star Speedway direct at (903) 986-9731.

VOLUNTEER REPORTS RECORD-BREAKING CROWDS FOR WoO RACE

By Robert Walden
March 31, 2004

BULLS GAP, Tenn. (March 31) – The World of Outlaws Late Model Series made its first-ever appearance Saturday, March 27 at Volunteer Speedway before a “standing room only” crowd – the largest in the history of the storied track. While Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa became the seventh different driver through the series’ first seven events in 2004 to visit victory lane, history was also made following the WoO race when the Volunteer Web site at www.volunteerspeedway.com  got shut down due to unusually high traffic on Monday.

Not only were the top names in dirt Late Model racing present competing with the Outlaws, with the NASCAR Cup and Busch events being held at nearby Bristol Motor Speedway, Bill Elliott was also in attendance at “The Gap” wheeling his dirt Late Model around the high banks. “Awesome Bill” failed to advance into the 60-lap feature after getting collected in a first-lap, multi-car crash in a last chance consolation race. However, that was not the only crash he was a part of!

While the Outlaws event at Volunteer was without a doubt the biggest show ever, the appearance of Elliott racing on dirt made news worldwide thanks to the Jayski.com Web site and its millions of viewers. With the WoO race story and results and racing action photos on the main page of the Volunteer site showing the crash and Elliott’s No. 9 Dodge Intrepid, those who visited the Jayski site saw the following.

Elliott Dirt Tracking: Bill Elliott raced on dirt Saturday night at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, TN. He qualified 33rd-fastest, but failed to qualify for the evening's feature race after crashing during his heat. A pic and more news on the race at www.volunteerspeedway.com . (3-29-2004)

That’s all it took! Once that was posted on Jayski, it didn’t take long before the Volunteer site was shut down due to the huge numbers who clicked on the Volunteer link.

“It’s really something else, our Web site getting shut down,” said track public relations director Robert Walden. “Once I finished typing the race story and results and posting several photos on the site around 6 a.m. on Sunday, I never dreamed our site would get overwhelmed with the tremendous amount of traffic we received. And it’s still shut down! There are a couple photos which show Bill Elliott. One while the wreck was happening, and one with him standing by his crashed car assessing the damage. I usually look on Jayski.com daily to check out the latest racing news myself, and with all the NASCAR-type fans the site attracts, I’m sure when they saw where Elliott raced on dirt with the World of Outlaws they wanted to see photos.

“ZFx Inc. in Kingsport is our site host, and the way I understand it is our Volunteer site was getting 1,000 hits per second. It was set up to be able to handle at least 100,000 people on the site at one time, and once it reached more than that it shut down. Who would’ve ever thought a dirt track’s Web site would get those kind of numbers? They (ZFx) said they’d never seen anything like it, and basically there’s nothing that can be done about it. Hopefully we’ll get our site back up sometime today.”

With the WoO show and the Duayne Hommel Benefit race officially in the books as the most successful weekend in the history of Volunteer Speedway, fans are already talking about the next appearance by the Outlaws at the track in August.

“Oh yeah, everyone we talked with at the track told us they can’t wait until our August mid-week WoO events,” said track general manager Doug Gillenwater. “Looking at the packed grandstand, infield pit and backside pit and tier-parking this past Saturday night was unreal. We had a tremendous crowd. Even though it might have been a tight squeeze (standing room only) getting everyone in, we managed to somehow accommodate all who walked up to the ticket booth wanting in. We were parking cars down in the grass fields behind our entrance sign at the road and in other locations on track property where we’d never had to before.”

For more information contact Volunteer Speedway at (423) 235-5020, or at www.volunteerspeedway.com  once the site gets back up.

Brian Birkhofer pockets $10,000 in Volunteer Speedway World of Outlaws victory

By Robert Walden
March 27, 2004

BULLS GAP, Tenn. (March 27) – Saturday night before the largest crowd in the history of Volunteer Speedway, Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa grabbed the lead from pole-sitter Freddy Smith as they raced into the first turn on lap 2, and once out front he never looked back in winning the World of Outlaws Late Model Series 60-lap feature over a star-studded field of competitors. Birkhofer became the series’ seventh different winner in seven events to date in the 2004 racing season.

Randle Chupp set fast-time at 13.572-seconds in qualifying over the 53-car field. The six heat races respectively were won by Chupp, Jeff Maupin, Birkhofer, Billy Moyer, Scott Bloomquist and Darrell Lanigan. Dashes were won by F. Smith and Birkhofer, with Steve Francis and Bart Hartman each winning consolations.

The first consolation saw Francis get together with Vic “The Thrill” Hill as they led the field into the first turn, with Hill slamming hard into the outside guardrail. With a total of seven cars involved, coming out on the worst end was Hill who flipped two times to destroy his No. 1 Monte Carlo, and NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Bill Elliott, who also made heavy contact to damage his No. 9 Dodge Intrepid.

Settling into third behind Birkhofer and Smith at the start was Greg Johnson, with Lanigan and Chupp rounding out the top five. With Birkhofer beginning to distance himself from Smith, Johnson was pressuring the “Southern Gentleman” for the runner-up spot, and just behind them Lanigan had Chupp shadowing his every move.

Getting a strong run off the fourth turn to pull alongside Lanigan down the front straightaway, Chupp carried it off deep into turn one to take over fourth place on lap 13. After sneaking peeks under Smith’s left-rear quarter panel racing off the corners for several circuits, Johnson got a good bite racing off the fourth turn to power into second on lap 17. With Chupp glued to Smith’s rear bumper, he dropped to the inside racing into turn three to move into third on lap 19.

After following Clint Smith from the drop of the green back in seventh place, Bloomquist dropped to the inside racing off (turn) two on lap 26 to move into the sixth spot. As the race reached halfway Birkhofer was still in command, but with the leader working heavy lapped traffic he had both Johnson and Chupp within striking distance.

Although Lanigan held off the advances from Bloomquist for several laps, on lap 41 between turns three and four Bloomquist made the pass to take over fifth and set his sights on F. Smith. The event’s only caution waved on lap 54 when Maupin slowed on the high side between turns three and four with engine problems to set up a six-lap dash to the checkers.

With the green waving on the restart Birkhofer quickly led Johnson and Chupp off into turn one, while behind them Bloomquist dove to the inside of F. Smith. Racing off the second turn and down the backstretch, Bloomquist had the advantage entering turn three to take fourth from F. Smith on lap 55.

But up front it was all Birkhofer, driving the Daufeldt Transport/Simon Trucking/J & J Steel/TB Company/Pro Power/No. 15b MasterSbilt Monte Carlo to the $10,000 victory over Johnson, Chupp, Bloomquist and F. Smith. Completing the top-10 finishers were Dale McDowell (after starting in 18th), Lanigan, C. Smith, Chub Frank and Moyer.

“Oh man, I’m so excited. What a crowd we have here tonight and it’s just great to be able to win a race here at Volunteer Speedway,” said the jubilant winner Birkhofer after climbing from his car to the cheers of the standing-room-only crowd on the front straightaway. “The few times I’ve ever raced here in the past I’ve never really had too good of runs, but I’m beginning to really like racing around these high banks. We decided to come down for the open practice session on Thursday night and we tried a lot of different things, and we learned a few more things in the ‘Hommel Benefit Race’ on Friday night that really made us good tonight.

“I don’t quite understand this deal with the Outlaws just yet about how you come out of the heats and go to the dashes, but it worked out really well for us tonight in winning the second dash to earn the right to start on the front row. Man, I’m telling you with the strong field of cars here tonight it really meant a lot where you started. Even though we were very good, I had some trouble once I closed in on the back of the field to try and lap those guys because they were racing hard. I could look on the scoreboard every time we came down the front straightaway and could see that Johnson and Chupp were running in second and third, and not knowing exactly how close they were I got kind of anxious working the lapped cars. I know a lot of big name drivers have won races here over the years and I’m glad to be able to say I’ve now also won at Bulls Gap. I believe everybody in the grandstands got their money’s worth tonight with the show they saw, and I really enjoyed it from my ride out front.”

McDowell Stays On Track to Win Outlaws' LM Finale At Atomic

March 14, 2004

OAK RIDGE, TN.....What a difference 24 hours makes. Just ask Dale McDowell.

The recently crowned Florida Tour champion was the only driver to lead both World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Mains at Atomic Motor Speedway over the weekend yet was rewarded with just one victory.

"If something had to happen I'm glad it was yesterday and not today," said McDowell, 37, who led all 60 laps on Sunday afternoon to earn the $12,000 grand prize. Atomic's season-opening 'Hoosier 100' began Saturday with a 40-lapper paying $5,000 to win and McDowell led the initial 10 circuits before spinning out in traffic.

"Everything was just about the same both times. The track was maybe a little faster today and the show was run off quicker with rain all around. We had a really good car all weekend and with the cautions falling at the right time were able to stay clean in traffic this time," McDowell added.

With 54 cars signed in each day, McDowell's no. 17m Larry Shaw Race Cars/Rocket entry was among the most noticeable as it sat on the pole for both features after he won a pair of preliminary dashes. McDowell time trialed 22nd fastest on Saturday and improved to 3rd quick Sunday, easily qualifying through his heat on both occasions.

McDowell out-dragged front row partner Greg Johnson when the initial green flag waved on Sunday with Wendell Wallace and John Blankenship in close pursuit. The order remained intact during the early stages with Steve Francis filling the fifth-place slot as the leaders reached traffic by lap 15.

Intent on improving one position from his runner-up finish registered the previous afternoon, Scott Bloomquist was the first driver to discover the outside groove was the fastest way around Atomic's high-banked third-miler. 'Bloomer' started eighth in the 24-car field and suddenly found enough traction to sweep past track regular Billy Ogle,Jr. and WoO Series star Steve Francis to crack the top-five by lap 24.

The first yellow flag slowed the action on lap 26 when Jeff Maupin stopped in turn four with mechanical difficulties. When the green lights reappeared Wallace jumped into second as Johnson chose the high side on the Delaware-style restart. Bloomquist also made his way past fourth-place Blankenship.

At the halfway mark the man on the move was 'Dirty Dozen' member Dan Schlieper. Time trialing 15th fastest, Schlieper could only muster third-place in his qualifying heat to fill in 15th on the starting grid. But after 30 laps of the feature he had followed Bloomquist's lead and successfully worked his way into sixth position.

Schlieper improved one more spot without even making a pass as a broken rear-end on lap 34 parked the Bloomquist entry for the duration. Two laps later Schlieper darted past Blankenship and on lap 40 tried to blast from fourth to second in one thrust yet dropped back in line as the leaders once again encountered traffic.

Despite the strategies playing out behind him, McDowell continued to open up a comfortable margin between Johnson, Wallace, Schlieper and Blankenship as the laps dwindled and the passing lanes began to narrow.

Schlieper was not yet done however as he ducked under Wallace as the pair jockeyed through turns one and two. Contact was made and Wallace spun forcing him to pick up the rear of the field with 16 laps still to go.

After trying unsuccessfully to pass runner-up Johnson on the low side on lap 46, Schlieper finally moved into second two laps later as the duo exited turn four. He then set his sights on McDowell who had easily opened up a five car-length advantage. Yet that lead quickly evaporated when Volunteer State driver Vic Hill stopped low in turn four to incur the final caution period on lap 48.

Back under green flag conditions McDowell and Schlieper wasted little time pulling away from the pack and by lap 55 had created a 10 car-length gap between top trailers Johnson, Ogle and Blankenship. But with tire wear becoming an issue over the final circuits, Schlieper could offer no serious challenges the remainder of the way and 'MacDaddy' cruised home by a full car-length under the checkers.

"I've had a lot of wins before but I'm really proud to add my first with this new Outlaws group," added McDowell, who finished 19th at Atomic on Saturday. "I feel like this deal has assembled the best of everything in the industry and it's a great feeling to beat the best in the business. Once the fans catch on to what we have to offer I'm sure they'll also be proud to be a part."

The final day of full-fender competition continued to showcase the World of Outlaws LM Series 'Dirty Dozen' as the 20-mile main event featured all but Chub Frank in the starting line-up. While McDowell and Schlieper played out lead roles, Francis (7th), Rick Aukland (9th), Darrell Lanigan (11th), Bart Hartman (12th), Rick Eckert (13th), Saturday's winner Billy Moyer (14th), Wallace (16th), Mike Balzano (17th) and Bloomquist (21st) made headlines of their own throughout the show.

Through the first six events ---resulting in six different winners--- in the inaugural World of Outlaws Late Model season points championship, McDowell (519) stands atop the chart followed closely by Bloomquist (512), Eckert (512), Moyer (507) and Francis (505). It was a roller coaster ride for McDowell at Atomic as he began the weekend behind only Bloomquist, then dropped to fifth after Saturday's show before climbing all the way to the top with his convincing flag-to-flag triumph.

The World of Outlaws Late Model Series makes its second successive stop in Tennessee with Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap hosting the 'Lords of the Ring' on Saturday, March 27 in its own season-opener. A full show of Late Model action includes time trials, qualifying races, consolation rounds and a 60-lap feature finale paying $10,000-to-win.

MOYER EXPLODES AT ATOMIC IN OUTLAW LATE MODEL SERIES RETURN

March 13, 2004

OAK RIDGE, TN.....The World of Outlaws Late Model Series returned to action after more than a month layoff and it was 'Dirty Dozen' mainstay Billy Moyer overtaking points leader Scott Bloomquist to capture his first checkered flag of the young season.

Moyer from Batesville, Ark. collected a $5,000 first-place check in day one following a methodical move from sixth to first which culminated in his first-ever win at the high-banked Oak Ridge third-miler.

"I was in the right place at the right time," said Moyer, 46, who scored the thrilling victory aboard his black no. 21 J&J Steel-Hawkeye Trucking/Rayburn Chevrolet Monte Carlo entry. "(Scott) was guarding the bottom a little too much and it caught up to him at the end."

Full-fender competition Saturday afternoon at Atomic marked the biggest season-opening event in the track's colorful 36-year history. With more than $100,000 in purses on the line for the inaugural Hoosier 100, Moyer claimed the lead-off 40-lapper while a 60-lap WoO Late Model Series A-Main paying $12,000-to-win awaits the top competitors on Sunday afternoon.

Moyer wasted little time showing he was the class of the 54-car field signed in for time trials as he scaled the third-miler in a time of 12.680 sec. for an average speed of 94.637 mph. Volunteer State favorite Bloomquist (12.805 sec.) from Mooresburg was second fastest while multi-time Atomic points champion Billy Ogle, Jr. (12.867 sec.) was third quickest and best among the locals.

Dash winners Dale McDowell and Mike Balzano shared the front row to pace the star-studded 24-car starting field and it was McDowell leading the early stages as his closest challengers continued to dice for position.

Row three partners Bloomquist and Moyer made the biggest advances as 'Bloomer' overtook Steve Francis on lap four then pulled into third past Rick Eckert the following circuit. Moyer remained in tow as the leaders approached traffic.

But it was the car of 24th running Scott James that ended any chance for recently crowned Florida Tour champion McDowell as his no. 17m machine spun with 10 laps complete. Balzano inherited the lead for the restart with Bloomquist, Moyer and Eckert in relentless pursuit.

The biggest incident of the feature took place on lap 12 when WoO rookie contender Tim McCreadie got caught up in lapped traffic with Shannon Babb and Patrick Duggan as the trio exited turn four. All were able to refire and on the ensuing Delware-style restart Balzano continued to run ahead of Bloomquist and Moyer.

Bloomquist stuck his nose under Balzano for the first time coming out of turn two on lap 13 but Balzano was able to slam the door shut as they dove into turn three. The stalled mount of Babb required another yellow flag on lap 14 to keep the field bunched still shy of the halfway mark. Balzano staved off another bid by Bloomquist on lap 16 before Vic Hill spun to incur a caution period and let him regain his breath.

The top-three order remained intact with 20 laps scored despite Balzano finding it harder to hold fast in the low groove. Bloomquist finally ducked low in turn four as the leaders came around to complete lap 23 and Moyer mirrored the inside maneuver out of turn two the following circuit.

Moyer quickly caught up to Bloomquist and actually pulled alongside low on lap 26 but his initial effort to take command was delayed when the frontrunners again reached traffic with only 10 circuits remaining. Three laps later Moyer switched lanes and once again ran wheel to wheel, this time testing the high line. The third try proved to be the charm as 'Mr. Smooth' dropped low exiting turn four to forge the final lead change as the scoreboard clicked off 35 laps complete.

Bloomquist never retreated as he made numerous bids up high aboard his potent Custom-powered no. 0 Miller Brothers Coal-Hawkeye Trucking machine before falling just a car-length shy under the checkers. Balzano, Eckert and Francis produced a sweep of the top-five spots for the Outlaws' 'Dirty Dozen' while Dan Schlieper (12th), Chub Frank (14th), Darrell Lanigan (15th), provisional starter Bart Hartman (16th) and McDowell (19th) finished further behind. Wendell Wallace and Rick Aukland did not qualify.

2002 UDTRA Rookie of the Year Ogle,Jr., Chris Madden, Ronnie Johnson, Tazewell (Tenn.) Speedway record-holder Steve Smith and 2000-2001 Atomic points champion Mark Vineyard rounded out the top-10 in the afternoon affair.

Moyer's victory vaults him from sixth to third in the points standings through five of the currently scheduled 48 WoO LM Series events. Bloomquist (404), Eckert (388), Moyer (385), Francis (369) and McDowell (365) rank highest with Bloomquist and Francis posting wins during the season-opening Florida Tour in February.

The World of Outlaws Late Model Series returns to Atomic on Sunday afternoon for its final show of the weekend. The nation's top full-fender stars battle in a big 60-lapper paying $12,000-to-win. Outlaws Late Models Head for the River this Spring

WoO LMS Public Relations

NORMAN,OK (March 1, 2004) -- The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will take center stage at the Red River Valley Speedway, Wednesday, May 12th making it's West Fargo debut during the year-long Centennial Celebration of the Red River Valley Fair. Though the temperatures may still be on the chilly side, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series Dirty Dozen will be sure to heat up the competition for an outstanding show at one of the country's finest and fastest ½ mile dirt tracks.

Red River Valley Fair Manager Bruce Olson welcomed the opportunity to bring the excitement of the World of Outlaws Late Models to his track not only once, but three times this season.

"We haven't run late models here in some time, but we're really excited to have them back and be a part of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series first season schedule," said Olson.

When asked his feelings on the WoO Dirty Dozen concept initiated by five-time National Champion Scott Bloomquist, Olson replied, "I think it's great, you're guaranteed to bring in the best talent in the country to compete against our own local talent - there's nothing better. It's going to make for great show."

Joining Bloomquist in the 2004 WoO Dirty Dozen are Mike Balzano (E1), Dale McDowell (17M), Rick Eckert (24), Bart Hartman (75), Billy Moyer (21), Steve Francis (15), Chub Frank (1), Dan Schlieper (9), Wendell Wallace (88), Rick Aukland (12) and Darrell Lanigan (29). Despite the grumblings from the rumour mill over the WoO LMS 2004 schedule and controversies surrounding several competing events, Olson commented, "Hey, there's only seven days in a week, so there's going to be that competition. The main thing is, go enjoy the sport that you love, whether it's late models, golf, or whatever."

And the $10,000 to-win May 12th show is just the beginning. Fans who enjoy the Red River Valley show will get the opportunity to literally come back for more when the WoO Late Model Series Dirty Dozen return for a re-match Friday and Saturday, August 6 and 7th where the stakes will be high, $5,000 to win Friday and $40,000 to win Saturday.

Ticket information for the May 12th event can be found on the Red River Valley Speedway web site at www.redrivervalleyspeedway.com  after March 15, or call the Speedway direct at 1-800-456-6408.
