Shane Stewart Wins First World of Outlaws Main Event

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

UNION HILL, LA (March 26) – Shane Stewart dodged spinning lapped cars twice during the final five laps on his way to winning his first World of Outlaws Sprint Series “A” Feature Friday when the series ran its inaugural event at Thunder Valley Speedway.

Stewart, who won successive World of Outlaws Sprint Series Preliminary Features at the Talladega Short Track and Devil’s Bowl Speedway in October of 2001, led all 35 laps to claim the $10,000 first prize.

“I couldn’t be happier,” said Stewart, who visited with elementary school children in Bixby, OK, Wednesday. “(Crew Chief) Rob (Hart)’s mom passed away earlier this year, and I’m sure she’s smiling down on us now. This is just awesome! This team is incredible; we’ve been fast all year long. We picked up Ol’ Glory as a sponsor, and I wish Carson and those guys could be here to celebrate with us tonight. This MIN Motorsports car with Hoosier tires and a Wesmar engine was great tonight.

“I started getting nervous the last couple of laps because the bottom was going away, and I kept waiting for someone to get around me on the top. I would have never believed that this race would have been won on the bottom. The Good Lord was definitely with us tonight. We had a lapped car spin right in front of us, and then he spun again in front of us a couple of laps later. You fans are awesome, and I’m glad you were here tonight. I don’t know what else to say – this is just awesome!”

Stewart, who won the First Dash Race for the privilege of starting the main event on the pole, narrowly missed colliding with Sam Haertepe, Jr., during the 25th and 27th laps. Terry McCarl finished second, just inches ahead of fast qualifier Steve Kinser who was racing for his 500th World of Outlaws Sprint Series “A” Feature victory.

Stewart drove MIN Motorsports’ #4M Ol’ Glory Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, only to have Second Heat Race winner Brian Paulus spin in the second corner early in the opening lap. Stewart won a front-straightaway drag race with Second Dash Race winner Kraig Kinser to take the lead when the race resumed.

Brooke Tatnell, the only Australian driver to win a World of Outlaws Sprint Series main event, passed Jason Sides and McCarl during the second and fourth laps to take over fourth place.

Stewart was 12 car-lengths ahead of Kraig Kinser when he entered lapped traffic five laps into the race. Steve Kinser passed Sides for fifth place early in lap eight, only to have First Heat Race winner Danny Lasoski take the position with an inside move in turn four 3½ laps later.

Erin Crocker’s fourth-corner spin tightened the field and took the leaders out of lapped traffic late in lap 14. Tatnell passed Kraig Kinser for second place, while Steve Kinser took the fifth position from Lasoski as the green flag replaced the yellow.

Third Heat Race winner Brian Brown suffered a broken front axle when he collided with “B” Feature winner Brandon Wimmer in the first corner one lap later. Brown’s crew was unable to repair the #6 Casey’s General Stores Maxim in time for him to restart the race.

“The Dude” passed Steve Kinser as the race resumed, then took fourth place from McCarl four laps later, only to spin in turn two early in the 20th lap.

Tim Shaffer and “The King of the Outlaws” took the inside line through the second corner to pass Kraig Kinser as the green flag replaced the yellow. Steve Kinser drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past Shaffer for fourth place with an inside move entering the third corner two laps later.

McCarl and Kinser raced past Tatnell to claim second and third place during laps 29 and 30. “The King of the Outlaws” raced wheel-to-wheel with the five-time and defending Knoxville Raceway champion through turns three and four late in the final lap, but was unable to surge ahead.

Tatnell finished in fourth place, ahead of Shaffer, Daryn Pittman, Craig Dollansky, 18th-starting Jason Meyers, Donny Schatz and Paulus. Pittman’s sixth-place run from inside the seventh row allowed him to pass four drivers in the point standings and take over seventh place.

“The King of the Outlaws” set Thunder Valley Speedway’s single-lap record with a 117.904-M.P.H. lap around the semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval.

Tyler Walker flipped during the third warm-up session, and the #5 Wirtgen/MPD Hand Controls Maxim was unable take a qualifying lap. The 2002 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion was running sixth with 4½ laps remaining in the “B” Feature when his engine lost power.

Engineering, Sprint Car Racing Cross Paths for Crocker

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

FORT WORTH, TX (March 23) – Erin Crocker isn’t different than any recent college graduate. She has her degree in Industrial and Management Engineering and is seeking a career choice. And to her delight Crocker has found her dream job – as a dirt track sprint car driver.

Crocker and the country’s best sprint car drivers will invade the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track April 3rd in the NGK Spark Plugs Shootout, the season’s only World of Outlaws Sprint Series program at the Dirt Track. The event is part of RPM Week – Texas at the Speedway – that includes a full week of racing during the Samsung/RadioShack 500 festivities.

Crocker is embarking on her first full season of competition with the World of Outlaws Sprint Series and is one of four talented candidates shooting for the series’ Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award. Her education and ability to drive the 800-horsepower sprint cars point to a bright future.

“I think the degree helps my racing,” the New York native said. “I took a bunch of physics and engineering classes and maybe I don’t remember the exact formula that I learned in the class, but it taught me the basics of how things work. If you put weight here, how does it affect the car there?

“On the media and management side of racing like sending out proposals, I had to write so many reports in school that I learned they had to be proper and perfect, you couldn’t have anything misspelled. It helps me doing interviews. Education teaches you professionalism.”

Crocker’s J&J sprint car is owned by fellow New Yorker Mike Woodring and carries sponsorship by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where Crocker earned her degree. She will be racing for the $10,000 winner’s prize along with 18-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser, 2001 series champion Danny Lasoski, Daryn Pittman, Donny Schatz, Craig Dollansky, Tim Shaffer and other sprint car racing stars.

Tickets to the April 3 NGK Spark Plugs Shootout are on sale daily at Texas Motor Speedway, by calling (817) 215-8500, online at www.texasmotorspeedway.com  and at Ticketmaster locations.

World of Outlaws to Return to Australia in 2005

GRANVILLE, NSW, AU (March 19) – Parramatta City Raceway is pleased to announce that the second “Outlaws Down Under” event will be held January 13-15 of 2005.

The 2004 Outlaws Down Under was a financially viable success and a great platform with which to build this event to even greater heights moving forward.

“I am sure the pricing strategies will appeal to everyone and the family unit has been factored into the 2005 ‘Outlaws Down Under’ event pricing structure,” PCR Managing Director Steven Green said.

It is well accepted that the 2004 Outlaws Down Under event staged at Parramatta City Raceway was the best sprint car racing ever seen in Australia, also coupled with terrific, unprecedented accessibility to the Outlaws drivers for the fans who attended.

To say the Outlaws driver troup thoroughly enjoyed the trip Down Under is the definitive understatement.

“I must also add that there has been phenomenal interest from USA teams already about next year’s event,” Green said. “So if you were blown away with the American sprint car contingent in 2004, just you wait and see what driver line-up will be in store for 2005.”

In relation to ticketing information, the following details describe how to purchase for next year’s event. Three-day ticket sales for the whole venue are already being sold.

In an innovative development, last year’s reserved seat holders have been offered an unique “Lifetime-Plus” Preferred Seat Licenses (PSL) opportunity, this PSL concept will also be available to those first-time advance ticket purchasers in future “Outlaws Down Under” events.

Fans who were reserved seat ticket holders at last year’s event are rewarded with a “Lifetime-Plus” Preferred Seat Licenses (PSL), for all seats held in their names at the “Outlaws Down Under” 2004 event. This means they can see the “Outlaws Down Under” 2005 and future “Outlaws Down Under” events from the same seat as last year guaranteed. As a PSL, they will be given first opportunity to pre-purchase the same seats you sat in at the inaugural event before they are offered to the general public.

Three-day tickets for the 2005 event are available to PSL's from 9.30 am (Eastern Standard Time) at the PCR office or via Internet, mail or phone order. To secure seats, fans must pay a minimum non-refundable deposit of $100 per ticket before 5 p.m. April 2nd. When submitting order, fans should quote receipt numbers from the inaugural event.

All PSL tickets not confirmed by 5 p.m on April 2nd will be offered to the general public after April 5th.

PSL seats can be passed on to family or friends or sold in the future if full payment or deposit is paid before the April 5th deadline.

This concept means you fans can own a personal slice of the World of Outlaws Down Under event for a lifetime!

Below see pricing for individual nights, however these will be sold on a first come, first serve basis on the actual night of the event concerned and available for purchase at Parramatta City Raceway only.

“Outlaws Down Under” – January 13-15, 2005 (rain dates January 16-18)

Premium Reserved Seat (Front Straight Grandstand) Adult: $242 (three-day), $77 (13-14), $88 (15th)

A $100 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of booking for each ticket in each group. ‘King of the Outlaws’ Takes Lone Star Preliminary

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

KILGORE, TX (March 12) – Steve Kinser is ready to throw the checkered flag on his race to victory #500. The World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ defending and 18-time champion took a big step toward fulfilling that goal Friday, winning the Preliminary Feature as the series opened a double-feature event at Lone Star Speedway.

“The King of the Outlaws” passed Paul McMahan with 1¼ laps remaining to win his second Preliminary Feature of the season. The $5,000 victory gave Kinser the privilege of starting Saturday’s Dash Race on the pole.

“I’ve had a terrible cold all week long,” Kinser said. “It seems like every time I fly back and forth from out West I catch something. The racecar has been running good all year long though; from the moment we took it out of the box. We hope we can get it (career main event victory #500) out of the way Saturday. It’s just a number. We just want to come into the racetrack feeling like we’re capable of winning every night, and that’s been the case for the last couple of years.

“It seems like you had to be a #11 to run up front tonight,” said Kinser, who won the “A” Feature at Lone Star Speedway last October 24th. “There were three of us up there. Kraig (Kinser) is getting better and better. He just needs some more laps, but he’s getting to see some of these tracks for the second or third time. Actually, I thought he was going to get by Paulie (McMahan) there down low, but he moved back up and I was able to find something down low in (turns) three and four. They kind of got bottled up there, and we got on through.”

Kinser drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim across the finish line six car-lengths ahead off McMahan in the #11H Selma Shell Maxim. Kinser’s won, Kraig, started on the pole and drove the #11K Delco-Remy Maxim into third place.

“The King of the Outlaws,” the third-fastest qualifier in the 30-car field, finished fourth in the Third Heat Race and earned the right to start the 20-lap Preliminary Feature inside the third row by following Kraig Kinser and Tim Shaffer under the checkered flag in the First Dash Race.

McMahan, who won the Second Dash Race, beat Kraig Kinser down the front straightaway as the green flag fell to take the lead in the Preliminary Feature, and was four car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic four laps into the race.

Steve Kinser, who passed Jason Solwold during the opening lap, raced past Shaffer in the low groove between turns one and two eight laps later.

Donny Schatz started inside the fifth row and drove his #15 Parker Stores J&J past Joey Saldana and fast qualifier Danny Lasoski during the 11th and 14th laps to take over sixth place.

“The King of the Outlaws” took the low line through the first and second corners to pass his son early in lap 16, then took the lead with an inside move in turn four 1½ laps later. Kinser’s fourth victory in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series last five feature races pushed him 24 points ahead of Shaffer and Tyler Walker, who are tied for second place, in the standings.

Schatz passed Walker with two laps remaining, then took fourth place from Shaffer with a daring, inside move in turn four as they raced toward the checkered flag. Finishing third and fourth in the Preliminary Feature qualified Kraig Kinser and Schatz for the second-row starting positions in Saturday’s Dash Race.

Shaffer finished in fifth place, ahead of Walker, Lasoski, Saldana, Brian Paulus and Craig Dollansky. Jason Meyers, the runner-up in the “B” Feature, drove the #14 Elite Landscaping Maxim into 13th place from outside the ninth row.

Lasoski, who set Lone Star Speedway’s single-lap record two years ago, paced the qualifying session for the fifth time this season with a 107.180-M.P.H. lap around the high-banked, 4/10-mile oval.

Dean Jacobs was running third midway through the “B” Feature when a radiator hose came loose on the #2 Volcano Joe’s Maxim. Jacobs spun into the retaining wall in the third corner and flipped. Jason Martin hit the wall and turned over as he tried to avoid Jacobs. Jacobs pitted for repairs and restarted at the rear of the field. His sixth-place finish in the “B” Feature made him the final driver to qualify for the evening’s main event. Jacobs passed four cars to finish 16th in the Preliminary Feature.

Lasoski Looks for Edge in Texas IROC Race

FORT WORTH, TX (March 11) – World of Outlaws Sprint Series driver Danny Lasoski is always looking for an extra edge to propel him into victory lane. Lasoski took advantage of an off day from his sprint car racing schedule to visit Texas Motor Speedway recently to get some extra practice for the April 2nd Crown Royal International Race of Champions race.

The 2001 World of Outlaws Sprint Series champion flew into Texas to run some extra laps around “The Great American Speedway” and to get some advice from Crown Royal IROC test drivers Dave Marcis, Jim and Jay Sauter. “The Dude” hopes the extra effort translates into his first IROC victory.

“I can’t wait for the Texas IROC race,” the driver of the J.D. Byrider sprint car owned by NASCAR NEXTEL Cup star Tony Stewart said. “I am starting on the pole and want to take full advantage of that. Dave, Jim and Jay gave me some great advice on how to get around Texas quicker. It is going to be a great race!”

Lasoski will be joined by fellow sprint car stars Steve Kinser (World of Outlaws) and J.J. Yeley (USAC) as they battle champions from NASCAR and the Indy Racing League in the April 2 IROC Texas debut. Kinser Sweeps Las Vegas Outlaw Nationals

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

LAS VEGAS, NV (March 5) – Steve Kinser moved to within one “A” Feature victory of 500 in his incomparable career Friday at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when he completed his sweep of the Las Vegas Outlaw Nationals Presented by J.D. Byrider.

Kinser, who also won Thursday’s Preliminary Feature, earned the privilege of starting the main event on the pole by winning the Dash Race, then led all 30 laps for his third victory of the season. The $12,000 victory, the third of his career at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, pushed “The King of the Outlaws” into first place in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series point standings.

“This feels really good,” Kinser said. “I wish we wouldn’t have gotten knocked out of the race at Perris (February 28th). I think we had that one well in hand until we got into a lapped car.

“This racecar has been performing really well. I could get into (turn) one on the bottom, and get back up in front of the lapped cars. (Crew chief) Scott Gerkin has been doing a tremendous job, and my brother, Randy, helps with the motors, and these Maxim cars have been working really well. When you have a team like this, it makes things a lot easier. Every time I go out on the racetrack, I’m afraid I’ll get outrun – that’s my biggest fear in life. I just hope we can get this next win and get it over with.”

The defending and 18-time series champion will get his first chance at victory #500 when the World of Outlaws runs a double-feature event at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, TX, Friday and Saturday.

Kinser burst into the lead from the pole as the green flag fell in the “A” Feature. Donny Schatz, whose #15 Parker Stores J&J experienced engine problems during the Dash Race, passed Paul McMahan and Brian Paulus with an inside move through turns three and four to take over fifth place late in lap three.

Kinser’s #11 Quaker State Maxim was 10 car-lengths ahead of outside pole-sitter Craig Dollansky when he entered lapped traffic two laps later.

Jeff Hodgson and Jeremy Campbell crashed in the fourth corner late in the 10th lap, bringing out the caution flag and tightening the field. Campbell, racing in his first World of Outlaws Sprint Series event in 2004, pitted for repairs, restarted and eventually finished in 15th place. Hodgson restarted the race, only to have his front end collapse and send him crashing into the first-corner retaining wall. The red flag fell so officials could clear Hodgson’s fuel from the racing surface. “B” Feature winner Terry McCarl lost eighth place as the race resumed, spinning into the turn-four retaining wall.

Schatz, the 2003 Motorsport Video Hard Charger award winner, continued his run toward the front after the green flag replaced the yellow. He passed defending Las Vegas Outlaw Nationals champion Tim Shaffer with an inside move between turns one and two early in the 11th lap, then took the high line around new track record holder Danny Lasoski in the same spot to claim third place eight laps later.

Dollansky was 15 car-lengths behind Kinser when they caught the back-markers during lap 21, but closed to within 10 car-lengths within a lap. The 2000 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion caught “The King of the Outlaws” in dense lapped traffic midway through the 24th lap. Kinser opened a 12-car-length advantage the next time around, however, when he passed Andy Forsberg with a slide move.

Schatz took the low line through turns three and four in an attempt to pass Dollansky with 2 2/3 laps remaining, but “The Crowd Pleaser” drove the #7 VMAC Maxim over the cushion to retain second place.

Kinser beat Dollansky under the checkered flag by 10 car-lengths to claim the 499th main event victory of his World of Outlaws Sprint Series career. “The King of the Outlaws” enters the Lone Star Speedway event 19 points ahead of previous standings leader Tyler Walker.

Schatz finished in third place, ahead of Lasoski, Shaffer, McMahan, 15th-starting Shane Stewart, Paulus and Heat Race winners Kraig Kinser and Daryn Pittman.

Walker, whose fifth-place finish in the “B” Feature kept him from qualifying for the main event, started last in the “A” Feature when Mike Faria was unable to take the green flag. The 2002 Gumout Series champion drove Guy Forbrook’s #5 Wirtgen/MPD Hand Controls Maxim past 13 cars to finish 11th in the main event.

Jason Meyers, who won the “A” Feature at Perris Auto Speedway a week ago, raced into 13th place from outside the 11th row.

Lasoski sliced .069 seconds off single-lap record Stewart set last March 1st with a 131.205-M.P.H. lap around Las Vegas’ semi-banked, ½-mile oval.

‘Dude’ Looks to Improve Points Ranking in Vegas

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

LAS VEGAS, NV (March 4) – Danny Lasoski was leading the World of Outlaws Sprint Series point standings heading into The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway a year ago. The 2001 champion expects to improve his sixth-place ranking when the series returns for the Las Vegas Outlaw Nationals Presented by J.D. Byrider Thursday and Friday.

“The Dude” set fast time in the preliminary and feature racing programs at Manzanita Speedway and last Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway, but is ready for a visit to victory lane. He has won three main events in Las Vegas, including a double-feature sweep of the World of Outlaws 2003 season finale.

“Three fast times in three races is something this race team is very proud of,” Lasoski said. “Paul Kistler and all the work that he's put into our Mopar engines has really given us a lot of confidence here at the beginning of the season. But you know us racers; we always want something more. Now we want a win. Las Vegas has been a really good track for me, and with my buddy and car owner Tony Stewart over there at the big track this weekend we want to put on a good show for him. The weather is looking a lot better than it did earlier this week in California, so we're really looking forward to going racing again."

Stewart, who ranks sixth in the NASCAR Nextel Cup standings, is eager to see his #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle in action.

"I'll be able to do what I need to do with The Home Depot Chevrolet and still have plenty of time to go over to The Dirt Track and watch Danny and the team,” Stewart said. “I'll have all Thursday night with them and then, as soon as I'm done with qualifying on Friday, I'll head over to The Dirt Track. I'll be busy as a car owner working with the team, but that's something I look forward to. It's why I'm involved with the World of Outlaws."

Lasoski, who ranked second in the points race behind Steve Kinser the last two years, finished 10th in the Cactus Classic at Manzanita and third at Perris Auto Speedway. “The Dude” is only 18 points behind standings leader Tyler Walker.

Kinser Wins Outlaw Nationals Preliminary with Late Pass

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

LAS VEGAS, NV (March 4) – Steve Kinser passed Brian Paulus during a 24th-lap restart on his way to winning Thursday’s Preliminary Feature at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as the World of Outlaws Sprint Series opened the Las Vegas Outlaw Nationals Presented by J.D. Byrider.

“The King of the Outlaws,” who lost the lead less than a lap from the checkered flag six days earlier at Perris Auto Speedway, closed to within seven points of World of Outlaws Sprint Series standings leader Tyler Walker with his first Preliminary Feature victory of the season. Kinser steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the low groove between the first and second corners to pass Paulus after Shane Stewart brought out the caution flag with a turn-three crash with 1 1/3 laps remaining. The $5,000 victory gave Kinser the pole position in Friday’s Dash Race.

“I was getting around the bottom of one and two really good,” Kinser said. “It just started getting a little slick coming off the corner to where you kind of had to watch it. I went in there and kind of missed the bottom and slid on up on Brian. Actually, it was probably the best thing that could have happened to me because I slid on up in front of him. He got a good run down the backstretch, and from there it was just a battle to see who could get the lowest getting into three.

“When I got here this afternoon I thought the track was maybe going to be a little too good and be kind of one lane, but it widened out pretty good and got slick through the middle.”

Kinser, the fourth-fastest qualifier in the 33-car field, earned the right to start the 25-lap Preliminary Feature inside the third row by finishing third in the First Dash Race.

Sammy Swindell, who was involved in a first-lap crash in the First Heat Race, won the First Dash Race for the privilege of starting the Preliminary Feature on the pole. The three-time series champion drove Roth Motorsports’ #83JR Beef Packers J&J into the lead as the green flag fell in the evening’s main event.

Stewart, who set the single-lap record at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last March 1st, was on the move during the first five laps, exchanging third and fourth places with fast qualifier Craig Dollansky and defending Las Vegas Outlaw Nationals champion Tim Shaffer three times.

Swindell, who won the 2000 World of Outlaws Sprint Series season finale in Las Vegas, was 10 car-lengths ahead of Paulus when he entered lapped traffic six laps into the race. Donny Schatz exchanged sixth place with Kinser during the seventh lap before his #15 Parker Stores J&J hit the retaining wall and flipped in turn one the next time around.

Swindell’s car started smoking midway through the race, and stopped on the back straightaway with engine problems four laps later. Paulus, who won the First Heat Race, restarted ahead of the 24-car field as the green flag replaced the yellow.

Walker, whose qualifying problems caused him to start inside the 12th row, drove Guy Forbrook’s #5 Wirtgen/MPD Hand Controls Maxim past 14 cars during the first 15 laps. The 2002 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion passed “B” Feature winner Danny Lasoski and Paul McMahan during the 17th and 18th laps to claim seventh place.

Paulus was four car-lengths ahead of Dollansky when he caught the back-markers with five laps remaining. Kinser passed the 2000 Gumout Series champion with an inside move between the first and second corners two laps later, and used the same move to take the lead during the final restart.

“It (500 main event victories) is just a number to me,” Kinser said as he looked forward to Friday’s “A” Feature. “I’d just like to get it over with so people would leave me alone about it. (Crew chief) Scott Gerkin has been doing a great job with these Maxim cars. If he gives me cars as good as I’ve had lately, we should be able to win a few more races here in the next couple of months.”

Dollansky, who drove Karavan Motorsports’ #7 VMAC Maxim past Paulus late in lap 24, was two car-lengths behind when the 18-time series champion took the checkered flag. Shaffer finished in fourth place, ahead of Daryn Pittman, Lasoski, Walker, McMahan, Fourth Heat Race winner Jason Sides and 16th-starting Dean Jacobs.

Jason Solwold, whose crew replaced his engine following the warm-up session, took one lap at the end of time trials. His new power plant picked up speed throughout the evening, allowing him to pass nine cars on his way to a 15th-place finish in the Preliminary Feature.

Meyers Wins at Perris as Kinser Suffers Flat Tire

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

LAKE PERRIS, CA (February 28) – Steve Kinser was less than a lap away from his first World of Outlaws Sprint Series victory at Perris Auto Speedway Saturday when the tire he damaged two laps earlier lost air pressure. Californian Jason Meyers passed him on his way to winning the Snap-on Tools Shootout.

Meyers and “The King of the Outlaws” exchanged the lead four times during the 30-lap thriller. Kinser was leading the race with 2½ remaining when his #11 Quaker State Maxim hit retaining wall on the back straightaway, and his right rear tire started losing air pressure soon thereafter. The tire was completely flat as Kinser entered the second corner early in the final lap, allowing Meyers and Craig Dollansky to race past. Danny Lasoski, who set fast time for the third time in the last three races, collided with the defending and 18-time champion on the back straightaway, causing Kinser to spin into Dean Jacobs.

Meyers held off Dollansky for the sixth victory of his World of Outlaws career. Meyers drove Karavan Motorsports’ #7 VMAC Maxim for five months while Dollansky recovered from a back injury last year.

“That was a great race!” Meyers yelled to the capacity crowd. “My partner, Guy Stockbridge, isn’t here tonight, but I can’t wait to tell him how we did.

“I got a really good start, and then Steve got by me. I was able to catch back up to him and get my him on the top, but the next lap he went right back by me, so I don’t know if he was relaxing out front or what.

“It’s unfortunate for Steve, but fortunate for me that he got that flat tire. I just want to thank everybody for coming out tonight. I know it was cold up there in the stands, but I hope everyone enjoyed the races.”

Meyers, the seventh-fastest qualifier, finished third in the First Heat Race and earned the privilege of starting the “A” Feature on the pole by winning the First Dash Race.

Meyers drove the #14 Elite Landscaping Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the World of Outlaws’ third “A” Feature of the season. Kinser, who started outside the second corner, passed Shane Stewart and Dollansky during the first two laps.

Tyler Walker, whose fifth-place finish pushed him into first place in the point standings, started outside the fourth row. The 2002 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion took the low line through turn four to pass Lasoski for fifth place late in the third lap. Kinser used a similar move to pass Meyers for the lead two laps later.

“The Dude,” who has won two of the World of Outlaws’ last four main events at Perris Auto Speedway, steered former NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle into the low groove between the first and second corners to pass Shane Stewart for fourth place early in lap 10.

Meyers was gaining on Kinser when Mike Faria spun in turn four two laps later. Brian Paulus lost 10th place midway through the race when his #28 Maxim turned completely around in the fourth corner.

Meyers and Kinser exchanged the lead during the 16th and 17th laps. Meyers took first place with a high move through turn two, only to have “The King of the Outlaws” pass him with an inside move in the same spot the next time around.

Engine problems forced Joey Saldana to stop on the front straightaway late in lap 18. Kinser raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the yellow, and was six car-lengths ahead of Meyers when he entered lapped traffic with six laps remaining.

Donny Schatz, who started outside the 11th row, drove his #15 Parker Stores J&J past 12 cars during the first 24 laps. The 2003 Motorsport Video Hard Charger award winner passed Kraig Kinser for ninth place early in lap 26 and eventually finished in seventh place.

Meyers was pleased to win in California for the first time in his World of Outlaws career.

“This win really helps a lot,” Meyers said. “This is a new team and funds are a little low. I’m just glad to get a win with my new crew chief Steve Swenson. Preston Cross has helped me the last couple of years, and he came down here tonight to help me out.”

Lasoski finished in third place, ahead of Stewart, Walker, Paul McMahan, Schatz, Kraig Kinser, 16th-starting Tim Shaffer and Daryn Pittman.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Series will run a $51,600 event at Kings Speedway Tuesday, then head to The Las Vegas Motor Speedway Dirt Track Thursday and Friday.

Meyers Takes Perris Thriller

LAKE PERRIS, Calif. – Steve Kinser was less than a lap away from his first World of Outlaws Sprint Series victory at Perris Auto Speedway Saturday when the tire he damaged two laps earlier lost air pressure.

Meyers and Kinser exchanged the lead during the 16th and 17th laps. Meyers took first place with a high move through turn two, only to have “The King of the Outlaws” pass him with an inside move in the same spot the next time around.

Outlaws Sprint Series Hires Lyle as Director of Competition

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

ALLEN, TX (February 25) – World of Outlaws Racing has hired Bill Lyle as the Director of Competition for its sprint car racing series, President Ted Johnson announced Wednesday.

Lyle, the Director of Competition for the All-Stars Circuit of Champions the last five years, worked with World of Outlaws Technical Inspector Don Grabey and Pit Steward Wayne Lustritx during the Inaugural Cactus Classic at Manzanita Speedway last weekend. Lyle was a pit steward his first four years with the All-Stars sprint car racing series.

“It feels really good to work with the World of Outlaws,” Lyle said. “I never in my wildest imagination thought I would be working with the World of Outlaws. It’s pretty overwhelming to be around all these great drivers and teams.”

Lyle, a Pennsylvania native, owned a sprint car driven by Bill Bailey in the late 1980s and early 1990s. They raced in Pennsylvania, one full season with the All-Stars and with Australia’s World Series of Sprint Cars for three years.

“I’ve known some of the drivers for many years,” Lyle said. “Tim Shaffer, who is from Apollo, PA, raced against us at a local sprint car track called Sportsman Speedway. We were friends long before he had any idea he would be out on the road racing with the World of Outlaws.”

Bob Jackson, the World of Outlaws Sprint Series director of competition for the last 15 years, now works for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series.

Dollansky Perseveres Through
Tough Weekend at Manzanita

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

PHOENIX, AZ (February 23) – Craig Dollansky persevered and raced in the World of Outlaws’ Inaugural Cactus Classic at Manzanita Speedway when many drivers would have sat in the pits last weekend.

“The Crowd Pleaser” suffered ligament damage to both of his ankles during Friday’s Preliminary Feaure when the drive line broke on Karavan Motorsports’ #7 VMAC Maxim. Although he was unable to walk without the aid of crutches, Dollansky raced in Saturday’s feature program.

"I have some serious ligament damage and some fluid buildup,” Dollansky said. “I can't walk, but I can be lifted into the car and drive and that's what I will do.

"We were running hard and ready to challenge (Paul) McMahan and (Donny) Schatz last night, and all of a sudden – boom – the night was done. It looks like some tire rubber got wrapped up in the birdcage, and locked up the drive line. The line exploded, and stuff was all over in the car. I hit the front end on the wall trying to get it stopped."

Dollansky was the second-fastest qualifier in Saturday’s qualifying session, then finished fourth in the Second Heat Race. His fifth-place finish in the Second Dash Race put him outside the fifth row in the 30-lap main event.

The 2000 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion was in sixth place late in the fourth lap of the “A” Feature when Erin Crocker hit the outside retaining wall and flipped in turn four. Dollansky received conflicting signals from fellow drivers concerning the pressure in his right rear tire as the cars were lining up for the restart, so he decided not to pit for repairs. The tire exploded five laps later, sending Dollansky into wall in the first corner. It was later discovered that a faulty bleeder valve caused the tire to lose pressure.

Finishing 15th in Friday’s preliminary and 22nd in the “A” Feature left Dollansky in 18th place in the point standings – 60 points out of first place – but 95 racing programs remain on the 2004 schedule. Craig has fond memories of Perris Auto Speedway, the next stop on the World of Outlaws schedule. He won the first “A” Feature of his career at Lake Perris’ half-mile oval on September 30, 1999.

Kinser Cactus Classic Winner

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Steve Kinser moved ever closer to the 500-victory plateau Saturday, leading all 30 laps from the pole to win the Inaugural Cactus Classic at Manzanita Speedway.

“The King of the Outlaws,” who took the lead in the World of Outlaws point standings with the $12,000 victory, enters Saturday’s race at Perris Auto Speedway with 498 “A” Feature victories in his incomparable career. Kinser also won the World of Outlaws Down Under main event at Parramatta City Raceway in Australia January 10th.

“This car’s been running good, and (crew chief) Scott (Gerkin) and the whole team’s been working real hard,” Kinser said. “We have two teams (including son Kraig) out here on the road now, and everyone’s just done a tremendous job. We’re off to a good start – and that’s what you want to have – but there’s still a long way to go. It takes two or three months to really find out who’s going to be fast out here.

“I grew up dreaming of racing, and watching my dad race, and he was just a master when it came to traffic. I carried a helmet bag around for a while after I graduated high school, but I could never come up with anything to drive. Finally, my dad and Jerry Shields let me get in one of their back-up cars, and it just took off from there. I always thought I’d get to be a weekend racer, and thought I’d have to lay blocks for a living. I just have to thank my family for putting up with me being on the road all the time to try to make a living. I’ll tell you one thing, winning never gets old!”

The 48-year-old legend earned the right to start Saturday’s main event on the pole by beating Preliminary Feature winner Tyler Walker across the finish line in the Dash Race.

Kinser and Walker were racing wheel-to-wheel for the lead early in the opening lap when Randy Hannagan and Third Heat Race winner Dean Jacobs spun into Keith Watkins and Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate Erin Crocker in turn one. “The King of the Outlaws” drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the lead as the race resumed. Danny Lasoski, who set fast time for the second consecutive night, passed Craig Dollansky for fourth place with an inside move between turns three and four several seconds later.

The defending and 18-time World of Outlaws champion was six car-lengths ahead of Walker when he entered lapped traffic four laps into the race. Crocker hit the retaining wall and flipped in the fourth corner the next time around, bringing out the red flag and tightening the field.

Jason Sides, the 2003 Rookie of the Year, took the low line into turn four to pass Dollansky for fifth place as the green flag replaced the yellow.

Twelve car-lengths separated Kinser and Walker when they caught the back-makers midway through the eighth lap. Walker, the 2002 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion, cut Kinser’s advantage in half within a lap.

Dollansky, who suffered a severely injured ankle in a crash during Friday’s Preliminary Feature, was unable to walk but was in the cockpit of Karavan Motorsports’ #7 VMAC Maxim Saturday. The main event ended prematurely for him early lap nine, however, as he hit the wall in the first corner. The 2000 Gumout Series champion was uninjured in the crash, but his crew was unable to repair the car in time for him to restart the race.

Kinser raced away from Walker as the green flag replaced the yellow, and opened a 10-car-length advantage within three laps. Lasoski lost fourth place midway through the “A” Feature when a fuel nozzle came loose on NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle.

Jason Meyers took the high line around Sammy Swindell for sixth place two laps after the race resumed.

“The King of the Outlaws” lost his half-straightaway advantage with 3¼ laps remaining when Joey Saldana spun in the fourth corner. Meyers surrendered sixth place when he pitted to change a flat tire during the caution period. The #83JR Ore-Cal J&J driven by Swindell started slowly as the green flag replaced the yellow, and Second Heat Race winner Jonathan Allard and Watkins spun to avoid him.

Kinser raced away from the field as the race resumed, and was 15 car-lengths ahead of Walker when he took the checkered flag in his eighth victory at Manzanita Speedway. “The King of the Outlaws” has never won a main event at Perris Auto Speedway.

Donny Schatz drove his #15 Parker Stores J&J into third place, ahead of Sides, Tim Shaffer, Paul McMahan, Daryn Pittman, Brian Paulus, Kraig Kinser and Lasoski. Pittman and Paulus each passed 10 cars to finish seventh and eighth, respectively.

Walker Wins Cactus Classic Opener at Manzanita

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

PHOENIX, AZ (February 20) – Tyler Walker, no stranger to success at Manzanita Speedway, held off Steve Kinser to win the Preliminary Feature then performed his signature back-flip victory celebration Friday when the World of Outlaws opened the Inaugural Cactus Classic.

Walker, who won both feature races in the 1998 Western World Championships at Manzanita, earned the privilege of starting Saturday’s Dash Race on the pole by leading the final 24 laps of Friday’s Preliminary Feature.

“Man, that was the longest race I ever ran,” the 2002 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion said. “It seemed like I was out there for two days. I have to thank Guy Forbrook for giving me the chance to drive his car and Stu Murray from Wirtgen – he makes this all possible. I’m out here having a blast.

“Goodyear tires really did their homework over the off-season. They gave us a great tire tonight. The Mopar engines, everything was great. I’ll come back (to victory lane) tomorrow night and do some more back-flips for you.”

Walker, the second-fastest qualifier in the 32-car field, earned the privilege of starting the Preliminary Feature on the pole by winning the First Dash Race. He raced wheel-to-wheel with outside pole-sitter Brian Brown, but spins by Third Heat Race winner Jeff Hodgson and Keith Watkins brought back the first two starts.

Brown drove Lonny Parsons’ #6 Casey General Stores Maxim into the lead following the second caution period. Defending and 18-time champion Steve Kinser took the high line through the first and second corners to pass Tim Shaffer for third place early in opening lap.

Brown flipped in turn two the next time around, however, and Walker restarted in first place when the green flag replaced the red.

Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate Kraig Kinser was battling Paul McMahan for fourth place within a lap after the race resumed when he spun into the retaining wall in turn three. Hodgson, Brian Paulus and Sammy Swindell collided with Kinser. Swindell, whose #83JR Ore-Cal J&J turned over in the crash, joined Kinser in the infield for the remainder of the race.

Randy Hannagan was trying to pass Dean Jacobs for sixth place early in the second lap when he hit the berm between the first and second corners and rolled the #1X TH Racing Hurricane.

Donny Schatz, who swept the 1999 Western World Championships feature races, steered his #15 Parker Stores J&J into the low groove in turn three to pass McMahan for fourth place as the race resumed.

Daryn Pittman lost 11th place late in the sixth lap when the #21 Hop & Sack CMC hit the wall in turn four. Fast qualifier Danny Lasoski, who passed seven cars during the first six laps, took the low line into the second corner to pass Jason Sides for ninth place as the green flag replaced the yellow.

Walker was a half-straightaway ahead of Steve Kinser when he entered lapped traffic midway through the race. “The King of the Outlaws” was only two car-lengths behind Walker four laps later when mechanical problems forced Joey Saldana to stop in turn two. Brian O’Donnell crashed into the wall and flipped in the second corner as the race resumed, bringing out the red flag. The driveline broke on Karavan Motorsports’ #7 VMAC Maxim during the ensuing restart, sending the 2000 Gumout Series champion into the retaining wall in turn one.

Walker raced away from Kinser as the green flag replaced the red, and was 15 car-lengths ahead when he caught the back-markers with 1½ laps remaining. “The King of the Outlaws” was half a straightaway behind when Walker took the checkered flag.

Shaffer finished in third place, ahead of Schatz, McMahan, Jacobs, Lasoski, Jonathan Allard, Sides and 18th-starting Brian Paulus. Calvin Landis raced past nine cars to finish in 11th place.

“The Dude,” who led the World of Outlaws with 28 fast times a year ago, paced the qualifying session with a 116.085-M.P.H. lap around Manzanita’s legendary half-mile oval.

World of Outlaws to Continue as Sprint Car Leader

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

ALLEN, TX (February 16) – The recent purchase of the World of Outlaws by Boundless Motor Sports Racing, Inc. (NASDAQ: OTCBB), has many sprint car racing fans concerned that the company’s emphasis will shift toward the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. That – sprint car fans – will not happen, series officials announced Monday.

“The World of Outlaws has been the leader in sprint car racing for 26 years and that’s not about to change,” series Founder and President Ted Johnson said. “Our company has been sold, but I’m still the president and sprint car racing will continue to be what’s emphasized here. The World of Outlaws will always be, first and foremost, the leader in sprint car racing.”

Boundless Chief Operating Officer Bobby Hartslief echoed Johnson’s sentiments, saying he is excited about the sprint car racing series’ future.

“The World of Outlaws is, without a doubt, the biggest brand in dirt motor racing in the world,” Hartslief said. “It is the backbone of winged sprint car racing. Our intention is to continue to build the sprint car brand to make it bigger and better than it’s ever been before. On the contrary, I think the interest shown in our late model division is indicative of the interest that exists in the World of Outlaws brand throughout the country. As you build the brand, more of corporate America will become involved in the brand. The more corporate America gets involved in the brand, things will start happening that have never happened before. We’re looking forward to some very exciting developments with the World of Outlaws.”

The World of Outlaws fire-breathing mudslinging sprint cars, which opened its 2004 season with a landmark triple-program event at Parramatta City Raceway near Sydney, Australia, in early January, will resume racing at Manzanita Speedway Friday and Saturday. Sprint car racing’s premier series will sanction 71 events over 100 dates at 50 tracks in 29 American states and one foreign country this year.

The series has also made great strides in the electronic media. The Outdoor Channel will produce and telecast 35 World of Outlaws events on a tape-delayed basis in 2004. The one-hour telecasts will air Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern Time between late March and mid-November as part of The Outdoor Channel’s “Wednesday Night Horsepower” time slot. Most telecasts air within 14 days of each race. Additional replays will be presented Saturdays at 8 a.m. Eastern Time and Thursdays at 10 p.m. Pacific Time. The Manzanita event will be televised March 31st.

Outlaws to Return to Manzanita Speedway

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

PHOENIX, AZ (February 16) – Donny Schatz dominated the 32nd Annual Western World Championships the last time the World of Outlaws raced at Manzanita Speedway, in October of 1999.

Since sweeping the feature races 3½ years ago, the 1997 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year has won 16 main events to run his career total to 20. After winning a career-high seven "A" Features and seven preliminaries a year ago, Schatz hopes to pus his #15 Parker Stores J&J on the fast track toward the 2004 series championship.

Schatz will have plenty of competition at Manzanita Speedway February 20-21 and for the World of Outlaws title, however, as 15 drivers plan to race fulltime with the series this season.

Steve Kinser, the defending series and 18-time champion has won seven main events at Phoenix’s legendary half-mile oval. "The King of the Outlaws" drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim to victory in 25 "A" Features a year ago and is only three victories away from 500 in his career.

Danny Lasoski, who won the World of Outlaws championship in 2001, led the point standings for 45 of 67 races last season but finished second for the third time in the last five years. "The Dude" drove former NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle to 11 victories, including the Knoxville Nationals, in 2003.

Daryn Pittman, who received the Manufacturers’ Hard Charger Award in 2002, drove the #21 Hop & Sack CMC to victory in three main events last season. He finished fourth in the point standings.

Craig Dollansky ranked third in points last year when a May 17th crash at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in an Infiniti Pro Series race put him in the pits for five months.

Jason Meyers drove the #7 VMAC Maxim in Dollansky’s absence and won four "A" Features while finishing ninth in the point standings. Meyers will drive the #14 Elite Landscaping Maxim in 2004.

After winning seven "A" Features and five preliminaries a year ago, Motorsport Video Hard Charger award winner Donny Schatz hopes to put his #15 Parker Stores J&J on the fast track to the 2004 series championship.

Jason Sides, the 2003 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year award winner, spun under the checkered flag just inches behind Pittman to finish second at The Raceway at Powercom Park last August 3rd. He ranked sixth in the 2003 standings.

Paul McMahan started driving the #11H Selma Shell Maxim last April and won main events at Lawrenceburg Speedway and Tri-City Speedway. He finished seventh in the point standings.

Brian Paulus drove the #28 P and P Motorsports Maxim past Schatz late in the final lap to win the first "A" Feature of his World of Outlaws career at Hartford Speedway Park last August 6th.

Tim Shaffer drove Dennis Roth’s #83 Beef Packers Eagle to victory in both feature races during the J.D. Byrider Outlaw Nationals at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last March.

Dean Jacobs, who finished 16th in the World of Outlaws point standings in 2000, is the new driver of Larry Woodward’s #4 Volcano Joe’s Coffee Maxim.

Shane Stewart, whose team received the Best Dressed Crew award during the 2003 Knoxville Nationals, will drive Roger Chilcutt’s #4M MIN Motorsports MCI again this season. He ranked 20th in World of Outlaws points last year.

Kraig Kinser, Erin Crocker, Jonathan Allard and Brian Brown form the strongest rookie class in World of Outlaws history as they battle for the Kevin Gobrecht award in 2004.

Kraig Kinser, Steve Kinser’s son, ranked 15th in the World of Outlaws point standings a year ago. He finished second in the Southern Bleacher Classic at Texas Motor Speedway in April of 2002. Kraig will drive the #11K Delco-Remy Maxim.

Crocker, the first female to qualify for the Knoxville Nationals championship feature last August, became the first driver – male or female – to receive the Wild Card Awards for exciting sprint car performances in the 360- and 410-cubic inch sprint car sprint car polls in the same season in 2003. Erin will drive the #16 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute J&J for former racer Mike Woodring.

Allard, the Silver Dollar Speedway champion in 2002, ranked 23rd in the World of Outlaws point standings a year ago. Jonathan drives the #35W PRT Travel Maxim.

Brown, Lasoski’s nephew, ranked 21st in the 2003 World of Outlaws point standings. He drove Lonny Parsons’ #6 Casey’s General Stores Maxim to a career-best fourth-place finish last September 13th at Hollywood Hills Speedway.

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (February 11) – World of Outlaws champions Danny Lasoski and Steve Kinser will start third and fourth in Friday’s 2004 Crown Royal International Race of Champions season opener at Daytona International Speedway.

Ryan Newman, representing NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, who won a series-high 11 poles in 2003 qualifying, only had to reach into a purple Crown Royal IROC bag to win the pole for Race One. This will mark Newman’s first start from the pole at Daytona International Speedway, which will be telecast live on Speed Channel at 5:00 p.m. ET. Fellow NASCAR NEXTEL Cup driver, Jimmie Johnson will start from the outside pole next to Newman in row one.

Lasoski, the 2001 World of Outlaws champion, finished ninth in the IROC point standings last season. Kinser, who has won 18 World of Outlaws championships, ranked 11th in the 2003 IROC standings after racing with the series for the first time since the mid-1990s.

Tuesday was a very busy day for the Crown Royal International Race of Champions team, as three practice sessions totaled more than six hours of track time.

Lasoski and Kinser practiced with Kenseth, NEXTEL Cup and reigning Crown Royal IROC Champion Kurt Busch, USAC Champion J. J. Yeley and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Champion, Travis Kvapil.

“This was my first opportunity to get back in the IROC cars and everything's feeling pretty good with the cars,” Kinser said. “I'm happy to be back in the IROC Series and happy for the new sponsorship with Crown Royal and we’re just going to a lot of fun with the great group of drivers we have this year.”

Row three in Friday’s starting lineup will be reigning NASCAR NEXTEL Cup champion, Matt Kenseth starting fifth with IRL IndyCar Series driver, Scott Sharp starting sixth. The fourth row is comprised of Crown Royal colors as 2003 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion, Travis Kvapil will start seventh in the violet color # 24 and reigning Crown Royal IROC champion Kurt Busch, will start eighth in the Royal Purple # 97, in honor of his championship.

Starting ninth will be the 2002 IROC champion, Kevin Harvick, with 10th starting spot going to the 2003 IRL IndyCar Series champion, Scott Dixon. The final row will consist of USAC champion, J. J. Yeley in 11th and two time Indianapolis 500 champion, Helio Castroneves in 12th.

Speed Channel’s Crown Royal IROC broadcast team, Mike Joy, Larry McReynolds and Jeff Hammond, hosted the draw.

‘The King’ Rules Outlaws ‘Down Under’ Finale

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

GRANVILLE, NSW, AU (January 10) – Steve Kinser showed why he is considered the world’s best sprint car racer Friday at Parramatta City Raceway in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ ‘Down Under’ finale.

“The King of the Outlaws” drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim to the 497th victory of his incomparable career to claim the $20,000 first prize.

“This is a great win,” the jubilant Kinser said as he pumped his fist before the adoring sellout crowd. “After spending so much of this weekend searching for the right setup on this car, we dialed it in nicely tonight. My regular crew chief, Scott Gerkin, stayed home and it is tribute to these guys here that we came on strong when it counted.”

Kinser won the First Heat Race, then earned the privilege of starting the main event outside the second row by finishing fourth in the Dash Race. The victory was Kinser’s eighth in an O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series season opener.

Sammy Swindell, who followed Kinser across the finish line in Thursday’s Preliminary Feature, earned $11,000 for his runner-up run.

“We had a strong car and I am really happy with our run here with a new team, driver and track,” Swindell said. “To be up there so quick is great. We made a few mistakes in traffic there, and that was the difference with Steve getting by there in the end. I have loved my time here and I am pretty keen to come back again next year if you will have me back.”

Joey Saldana won the Third Heat Race and passed four cars to finish third in the “A” Feature.

“The car was great and we had a nice hard tire on that really worked good up top or down low there,” Saldana said. “Parramatta City Raceway put on one hell of an event here these three nights, and here is hoping we get even more of these American guys here next year to treat you guys.”

Australian Kerry Madsen, who won both Preliminary Features, appeared to be on his way to a second-place finish before a front-end suspension failure with several laps remaining cost him two positions.

Donny Schatz, who won Parramatta’s International Event a week before, finished in fifth place. Jason Sides finished sixth, ahead of Second Heat Race winner Daryn Pittman, 16th-starting Jason Meyers, 15th-starting Kraig Kinser and Tim Kaeding, who won the 2002 O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series season opener. Brian Paulus raced past seven cars to finish in 12th place.

Troy Little passed six cars to finish third in the “B” Feature, then raced into 14th place from outside the 12th row in the main event.

The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series will open its United States racing schedule February 20-21 at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, AZ.

Madsen Sweeps Outlaws ‘Down Under’ Preliminaries

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

GRANVILLE, NSW, AU (January 9) – Kerry Madsen thrilled his fellow Australians again Friday, winning another Preliminary Feature as the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series ran the second preliminary program at Parramatta City Raceway.

The “Mad Man,” who also won the Preliminary Feature on opening night, received thunderous applause from the capacity crowd as he performed a wing dance atop the #A1 Bikebiz Yamaha Cool.

“I came in here after last night hoping to just lock in a top-five and – hey – we have done a little more than that,” Madsen said in victory lane. “I have to thank my crew and the whole Bikebiz Yamaha team and this racetrack was awesome … you could run anywhere.”

Joey Saldana, who finished second in last week’s $50,000-to-win International Event at Parramatta and won Thursday’s Fourth Heat Race, almost caught Madsen at the end of the Preliminary Feature.

“The car just got better and better, and another 10 laps like we will have tomorrow night would have been real handy,” Saldana said. “But hey, this guy (Madsen) can sure race and is easily the best Australian driver right now and genuinely one of the best in the world.”

Pole-sitter Paul McMahan won the Third Heat Race from outside the third row before following Madsen and Saldana under the checkered flag in the evening’s main event.

“We were too good too early and full credit to Kerry and Joey out there,” McMahan said. “That was great racing all night long. I think we might have to get Kerry drunk tonight because he is going to awful hard to beat here tomorrow otherwise.”

The smooth Paramatta racing surface that featured a perfect cushion in the high groove produced intense racing and not a spec of dust.

Sammy Swindell raced past five cars to win the Second Heat Race, then finished fourth in the Preliminary Feature despite suffering a broken left front shock absorber early.

Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Jason Sides earned the nickname Jason “Slides” while executing breathtaking slide-job moves during the Fourth Heat Race and Second Dash Race.

Craig Dollansky finished in fifth place, ahead of fast qualifier Max Dumesny, First Heat Race winner Daryn Pittman, Sides and Steve Kinser. International Event champion Donny Schatz finished last in the First Heat Race, then won the “B” Feature and raced into 10th place from inside the 10th row in the main event. Adam Clarke drove past seven cars to finish 16th.

Madsen, Swindell, McMahan and Sides earned the first four starting positions in Saturday’s Dash Race by scoring the most points in the preliminary programs.

Madsen Wins World of Outlaws ‘Down Under’ Opener

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

GRANVILLE, NSW, AU (January 8) – Kerry Madsen ran the race of his life to beat O’Reilly World of Outlaws champions Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell under the checkered flag in the Preliminary Feature at Parramatta City Raceway Thursday on opening night of the historic Outlaws ‘Down Under’ event.

Madsen, who ranked second in the Knoxville Raceway point standings last season, passed pole-sitter Donny Schatz for the lead and held off the sprint car racing legends for the $5,000 first prize.

“This win is as special as anything I have ever done,” the emotional Madsen yelled to the partisan crowd from victory lane. “To join these two guys (Kinser and Swindell) on the podium as a winner is something I will cherish forever.”

Madsen paced the qualifying session of the second preliminary program at the 43rd Annual Knoxville Nationals last August, won the “B” Feature and raced past 14 cars to finish seventh in the evening’s main event.

Kinser, who claimed his 18th O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series championship two months ago, had nothing but praise for “Mad Man” Madsen.

“I have said it before about Kerry; he is a fine talent and he did a great job tonight,” Kinser said. “I was not completely happy with the car, but there are still two days of racing to go and that was a nice start. Full credit to Kerry and we will keep working at it from here.”

Swindell, who secured third place with a daring move past Schatz, Daryn Pittman and Troy Little through the first and second corners late in the race, was happy with his opening-night performance.

“We had a bit of clay in the left rear and the right rear tire was going flat, too, but I’m happy with this racecar and this is a good start to the next couple of days,” the three-time O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series champion said. “It was hard with some heavy lapped traffic on the bottom but we got through better toward the end.”

Madsen also drove the #A1 Bikebiz Yamaha Cool to victory from outside the second row in the First Heat Race. Schatz, Craig Dollansky and Joey Saldana won the other Heat Races.

Schatz and Saldana, who finished 1-2 in last week’s $50,000-to-win International Event at Parramatta City Raceway, won Thursday’s Dash Races for the right to start the Preliminary Feature on the front row. Schatz, who won the First Dash Race from outside the third row, held off Saldana during the race’s early stages. Saldana spun late and eventually finished 15th.

Schatz finished the Preliminary Feature in fourth place, ahead of Pittman, Little, Trevor Green, Jason Sides, Dennis Moore, Jr., and 15th-starting Adrian Maher. Jason Meyers raced past 13 cars to finish 11th.

Outdoor Channel Expands Outlaws Television Coverage

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

ALLEN, TX (January 5) – The Outdoor Channel has expanded its coverage of O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series sprint car racing, the cable television network’s Senior Vice President of Programming, Wade Sherman, and series President Ted Johnson announced Monday.

The Outdoor Channel signed a contract to televise 27 O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series races on a tape-delayed basis September 17th, then increased the number to 35 Monday.

“We’re extremely pleased to expand our agreement with The Outdoor Channel,” Johnson said. “Having more than half of our events televised on this thriving cable network will give us tremendous exposure as our fan base continues to grow. This contract will put us in front of the American public for three years, and we expect this to continue as we grow with The Outdoor Channel.”

The Outdoor Channel will tape the February 20-21 event at Manzanita Speedway and televise the event March 31st to start an eight-month run of O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series programming.

The one-hour telecasts will air Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern Time between March 31st and November 24th as part of The Outdoor Channel’s “Wednesday Night Horsepower” time slot. Most telecasts air within 14 days of each race. Additional replays will be presented Saturdays at 8 a.m. Eastern Time and Thursdays at 10 p.m. Pacific Time.

Among the more notable events The Outdoor Channel will telecast are double-feature events from the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, Eldora Speedway, Knoxville Raceway, Williams Grove Speedway, Eagle Raceway, Grays Harbor Raceway Park, Billings Motorsports Park and Princeton Speedway.

The cable television network will also televise all three nights of racing during the Duel in the Dakotas at Red River Valley Speedway, the Cleveland Brother Summer Nationals from Williams Grove Speedway, the Harvest Classic at Calistoga Speedway and the Gold Cup Race of Champions from Silver Dollar Speedway.

“The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series brand is highly recognizable among American race fans,” Sherman said. “We are confident this series will be tremendously popular with our audience and is likely to establish itself quickly as our flagship motorsports property.”

The Outdoor Channel is a national cable network dedicated to providing the best in traditional outdoor programming to America’s sixty million anglers, hunters and sprint car racing fans. The Outdoor Channel is available to almost sixty million homes in the U.S. through a combination of cable networks and satellite providers. The network recently announced its launch to an international audience, reaching almost eight million homes in Latin America. Outlaws Drivers Express Excitement for ‘Down Under’ Event

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

GRANVILLE, NSW, AU (January 5) – O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series drivers have ruled America’s dirt tracks for years. Now they’re excited about the opportunity to compete in the series’ first overseas event – the World of Outlaws ‘Down Under’ – this week.

Fourteen drivers from sprint car racing’s premier series will battle Australian racers for $148,000 in a special, international event at Parramatta City Raceway Thursday through Saturday.

“I think racing in Australia is the best thing that could ever happen to the World of Outlaws,” said Joey Saldana, who won the opening-night feature in last week’s Sprint Car International event at Parramatta. “We’ll be racing on a different continent and it can legitimately be called ‘the World of Outlaws’ now. I wish more people would support it. Fifteen teams were given the opportunity to go and I’m sure those who don’t go will regret not going. The event is only going to help the sport. So many people are complaining about the sport now, but when it comes down to doing something positive for it, some people don’t want to support it.”

Saldana battled Donny Schatz throughout the $50,000-to-win finale only to finish second as Schatz won Parramatta’s grand prize for the third time in four years.

"This is a great way to kick off our month of competition in Australia," Schatz said. “We decided to solely attack Parramatta City Raceway in the lead-in to the World of Outlaws show here, and winning this race is the perfect start. After having the tire go down on opening night, this is a great rebound for our Parker Stores team.

"The way Joey was pressuring me there, that was as tough and fierce a race as I have run anywhere and I was glad to come out on top. The car was set up almost perfect for the feature. I could roll the top wing back and load up the rear to keep getting the rear bite I needed and it paid off for us tonight.

"Parramatta is such a great place to race. The grandstands were packed, and the fans were pretty excited by the level of competition. When the crowd is excited, that energy transfers to the drivers and makes the event that much better. When the World of Outlaws get here, it will be a barn burner."

Following Schatz and Saldana across the line was fellow American and O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series regular Daryn Pittman.

“The World of Outlaws ‘Down Under’ event will be really good,” Pittman said. “Since I’ve raced over there before, people think I should have an advantage but I never do. It doesn’t take any World of Outlaws driver more than a couple of laps to figure out the racetrack. I’ve enjoyed racing over there, and this is one of the better racetracks in Australia. That’ll be good for the fans and the racers. I think it’s going be interesting how it all shakes out, but I think it’s a step in the right direction for sprint car racing. It’s good to open the sport a bit more and reach some new fans.”

Steve Kinser, who completed his 18th O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series championship run two months ago, is ready to resume his pursuit of 500 career victories in Australia.

“I’m looking forward to going to Australia again,” said Kinser, who has won 496 World of Outlaws main events. “We’re going with some World of Outlaws regulars who are going to go down and put on a race for the Australian people. They’re looking forward to it, too. I’ve always enjoyed going there. The only thing I don’t like is flying that long in a plane. I’ve always enjoy being there and I have a lot of friends there also. They love sprint car racing down there.”

Paul McMahan has raced in Australia the last three years, but only once at Parramatta City Raceway.

“I’ve raced in Australia before, but the World of Outlaws ‘Down Under’ event will be different,” McMahan said. “It’s going to be neat for the fans over there. The fans in Australia are like Eldora fans everywhere you go. They’re really into their racing. They really enjoy the racing. They haven’t been able to see very many of us together on the same track on the same night before. Ten or 15 of us will be racing against their best. From a driver’s perspective, it’s all good. I want to race as much as I can; that’s why I go over there during our winter time. It’s going to help us out, but it’s really going to be the best for the fans who haven’t able to see Steve (Kinser), Craig (Dollansky), me, Donny Schatz and all the others at one place like the Knoxville Nationals.”

Dollansky and three-time O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series champion Sammy Swindell are excited about their first ‘Down Under’ racing experience.

“I’m looking forward to going to Australia,” Dollansky said. “I’ve had some offers to go there in the past, but I haven’t done it. This situation should be good exposure for race teams and for the series. I think it will be pretty exciting for the fans over there.”

“I’m definitely going to race in Australia,” Swindell said. “I’ve never been there before. I’m looking forward to going over there to see what it’s like. I’m going to drive for (Australians) Barry Graham and Steven Graham over there, so we’ll see how that goes. The World of Outlaws has run races in Canada and Mexico before, but never overseas. This has never happened there and I haven’t been over there at all, so I don’t have any idea what to expect.”

Jason Meyers, who drove the #7 VMAC Maxim while Dollansky recovered from a back injury last season, is pleased to return to Australia to battle the world’s best sprint car racers.

“I think the World of Outlaws ‘Down Under’ event will be very exciting,” Meyers said. “I’ve been down there before and it’s a lot of fun. I think what (Promoter) Brian Healy is doing is great for the World of Outlaws.”

Other O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series drivers racing in the ‘Down Under’ event include Brian Paulus, Jason Sides, Kraig Kinser, Brandon Wimmer, Tim Kaeding and Dennis Moore, Jr.
