Paul McMahan Dominates Outlaws' Bluegrass Classic

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

CALVERT CITY, KY (May 8) – A week ago, Paul McMahan was the only driver ranking in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series top 10 without a top-five finish. The driver of the #11H Selma Shell Maxim has turned that around in a big way in the last two events.

McMahan, who raced into fourth place at Lawrenceburg Speedway Thursday, won his first “A” Feature of the season Saturday, leading all 35 laps in the Bluegrass Classic at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway. Ironically, McMahan won his first main event of the 2003 season last May 6th at Lawrenceburg Speedway in only his third feature race with the team.

The $10,000 victory, the fourth of McMahan’s World of Outlaws Sprint Series career, pushed him into fourth place in the point standings. Eight drivers have combined to win the first 13 World of Outlaws Sprint Series main events in 2004.

McMahan, the ninth-fastest qualifier in the 32-car field, barely qualified for the “A” Feature in the First Heat Race. Brian Paulus passed him for fourth place when his right rear tire exploded as they headed to the checkered flag, but he held off Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate Erin Crocker for the final qualifying position. McMahan earned the privilege of starting the main event on the pole by winning the First Dash Race.

McMahan burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the “A” Feature, only to have Fourth Heat Race winner Brandon Wimmer spin in the second corner early in the opening lap. Paul won a front-straightaway drag race with outside pole-sitter Daryn Pittman to take the lead when green flag replaced the yellow.

Danny Lasoski was on the move following the restart, driving 2002 NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle past Donny Schatz and Tim Shaffer during laps three and four to take over fourth place.

World of Outlaws Sprint Series points leader Steve Kinser and his son, Kraig, raced wheel-to-wheel while battling for seventh place early in the sixth lap. Kraig, who leads the Rookie of the Year race, drove the #11K Delco-Remy Maxim ahead of “The King of the Outlaws” in the low groove between the first and second corners.

McMahan was approaching lapped traffic the next time around when Brian Paulus spun in turn four. Mark Kinser surrendered ninth place when his crew replaced a flat right rear tire on the #5M Sabko Maxim, while rookie Brian Brown retired to the pit area.

As was the case following the first-lap restart, “The Dude” gained two positions soon after the green replaced the yellow. Lasoski took the low line through the first and second corners to pass Pittman and Joey Saldana for the runner-up spot early in the eighth lap. Shaffer raced around Pittman in the high groove between turns three and four to take over fourth place one lap later.

Kraig Kinser and Pittman exchanged fifth place three times during the next four laps. They took turns riding the rim around each other in turn four during the 10th and 11th laps, then Kraig took the low line into the fourth corner to reclaim the position late in lap 13.

McMahan was 15 car-lengths ahead of Lasoski when he entered lapped traffic three laps later. “The Dude” cut McMahan’s advantage to 12 car-lengths by the 20th lap, however.

McMahan narrowly missed colliding with Wimmer, who spun in turn four, late in lap 21. Paul raced away from Lasoski when the race resumed, but fast qualifier Jonathan Allard stopped with a flat right rear tire one lap later.

McMahan controlled the final restart, and caught the back-markers with an eight-car-length advantage with four laps remaining. “The Dude” caught McMahan during the 34th lap, but was a car-length behind at the checkered flag. Lasoski closed to within 27 points of first place in the standings with his fourth straight finish in the top six.

Saldana finished in third place, ahead of Kraig Kinser, 13th-starting Jason Meyers, Pittman, Steve Kinser, Schatz, Kelly Kinser and Tim Kaeding. Kraig improved two positions to fifth place in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series point standings with his fourth top-five finish of the season.

Shaffer crossed the finish line in fourth place, but was credited with 25th when the #83 Beef Packers Eagle violated the World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ 1,375-pound weight rule.

Brooke Tatnell drove the #66 Phillips 66 Trop Artic Eagle past 11 cars to finish in 12th place.

Crocker overcame engine problems to tie her best “A” Feature finish of the season. Her crew replaced the engine in the #16 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Maxim following the qualifying session. Erin was running third when her engine lost power early in the final lap of the “B” Feature, keeping her from qualifying for the main event. Erin used a provisional to start the “A” Feature, and raced into 14th place from the 13th row.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Series will sanction the Freedom 40 at K-C Raceway Tuesday, then run $51,600 events at the Terre Haute Action Track and Tri-City Speedway Friday and Saturday. WoO

Mark Kinser Wins Budweiser Spring Classic at Knoxville

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

KNOXVILLE, IA (May 1) – The last time Mark Kinser raced at Knoxville Raceway, his father, Karl Kinser, underwent an emergency appendectomy at Knoxville Area Community Hospital during the Knoxville Nationals. That somber memory was still on Kinser’s mind Saturday when he won the Budweiser Spring Classic – only his second World of Outlaws Sprint Series event this season.

“I have to thank pretty much the entire staff of Knoxville Hospital,” Mark said. “They got us through a rough time, and I still get pretty choked up even thinking about it.

“We finally got some good help. We’ve had trouble keeping good help around. I guess when you’re not running up front, they don’t want to stay. We have Chris (Strait) working for us now, and I think he’s one of the best mechanics I’ve ever had.

“I have to thank Chuck Merrill of Maxim Chassis. We have an experimental car – it’s the only one like it in the field. He and my dad put their heads together and came up with something that really worked here tonight. I didn’t really think I was that well liked or respected around here, but I’ve had a lot of fans come up this weekend and say they’re glad to see me back. That really means a lot.”

The three-time Knoxville Nationals champion led all 25 laps in the 152nd victory of his World of Outlaws Sprint Series career. The $10,000 victory was the 13th of his career at Knoxville Raceway. Kinser is the sixth different winner in 11 World of Outlaws Sprint Series main events in 2004.

Kinser, the sixth-fastest qualifier in the largest field the World of Outlaws Sprint Series has attracted this year – 65 cars – qualified for the main event despite spinning out of third place in the Third Heat Race. The two-time World of Outlaw Sprint Series champion won the First Dash Race for the privilege of starting the “A” Feature on the pole.

Kinser drove the #5M SABKO Maxim past outside pole-sitter Jason Johnson as the green flag fell in the main event. Ricky Logan flipped in the first corner early in the second lap, however, bringing out the red flag. Kinser and Johnson exchanged the lead twice within a lap after the race resumed, only to have Matt Moro flip in turn four. Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year points leader Kraig Kinser used a provisional to start the “A” Feature. He collided with Moro, but rejoined the race after his crew replaced the front wing on the #11K Delco-Remy Maxim, and eventually finished in 20th place.

Defending Knoxville Nationals champion Danny Lasoski and Tim Kaeding passed Craig Dollansky within two laps after the green flag replaced the red. “The Crowd Pleaser” regained fifth place late in lap five by driving the #7 VMAC Maxim around Kaeding in the high groove between turns three and four.

Jason Meyers and Lasoski raced past Johnson for second and third place during the ninth and 10th laps. Johnson passed “The Dude” just before Brian Paulus stopped on the back straightaway with overheating problems late in lap 11. Fast-qualifier Chad Kemenah, Dollansky, Meyers and Tim Shaffer passed Johnson during the race’s middle stages.

Kinser opened a comfortable advantage as positions 2-6 changed often during the final six laps. Lasoski and Kemenah raced past Meyers on the back straightaway for second and third place midway through the 19th lap. Kemenah continued his run to the front the next time around, riding the rim through turn four to pass “The Dude” for the runner-up spot a split-second before “B” Feature winner Joey Saldana flipped into Daryn Pittman on the front stretch. Pittman’s crew repaired the #21 Hop & Sack CMC and he raced back into 14th place during the final five laps.

Shaffer, who drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle past 14 cars during the first 21 laps, passed Kaeding deep in the second corner for sixth place with 1 2/3 laps remaining.

Kinser was 1.8 seconds ahead of Kemenah when he took the checkered flag. Beef Packers teammates Shaffer and Kaeding claimed fourth and fifth place with the checkered flag in sight as Dollansky ran out of fuel and coasted toward the finish line.

Lasoski narrowed Steve Kinser’s advantage in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series standings to 53 points with his fifth top-five run of the year. Shaffer finished in fourth place, ahead of Kaeding, Dollansky, 22nd-starting Donny Schatz, Meyers, 20th-starting Steve Kinser and Jason Sides, who started inside the 12th row.

Kemenah paced the qualifying session with a 113.694-M.P.H. lap around Knoxville’s legendary half-mile oval.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Series will run $51,600 events at Lawrenceburg Speedway Thursday and Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway Saturday. WoO

Meyers Holds Off Kraig Kinser to Win at Talladega

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

TALLADEGA, AL (April 24) – Jason Meyers maintained the lead despite the repeated challenges of rookie Kraig Kinser all the way to the checkered flag while winning Saturday’s World of Outlaws Sprint Series “A” Feature at the Talladega Short Track.

Meyers, who also won at Perris Auto Speedway February 28th, led all 35 laps from outside the front row to claim the seventh victory of his World of Outlaws Sprint Series career. The $10,000 victory pushed him from 10th to eighth place in the point standings.

“It feels really good to get our second win here,” Meyers said. “We set a goal at the beginning of the season to win 10 races, and we were falling a little behind. This puts us back on track. This is a brand new team this year. We hired Steve Swenson as the crew chief, we just hired Bob Curtis this week, and they’re doing a great job. A bunch of people came together to make this work: Elite Landscaping, Pacific Union Homes, Lafferty Homes, and Peninsula Ford Dealers.”

Meyers, the seventh-fastest qualifier in the 29-car field, earned the privilege of starting the main event on the front row by driving the #14 Elite Landscaping Maxim to victory in the Second Dash Race.

Danny Lasoski, who has won World of Outlaws Sprint Series “A” Features at the Talladega Short Track the last two years, won the First Dash Race and started on the pole. “The Dude” drove 2002 NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event twice, but Brian Paulus and Bob Bennett nullified with starts with turn-two spins.

Meyers raced around the 2001 World of Outlaws Sprint Series champion to take the lead when the green flag replaced the yellow. Kinser, who is racing for the 2004 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year award, drove the #11K Delco-Remy Maxim to the deepest point between the first and second corners to pass Lasoski for second place early in the opening lap.

Shane Stewart, who won a Preliminary Feature at the Talladega Short Track on October 19, 2001, passed “The Dude” for third place with an inside move through turn four 1½ laps later. Second Heat Race winner Joey Saldana used a similar move to pass World of Outlaws Sprint Series points leader Steve Kinser for fifth place late in lap four.

Meyers was 12 car-lengths ahead of Kraig Kinser when he entered lapped traffic three laps later. Kraig Kinser, who raced back into fifth place in the Third Heat Race after colliding with fellow rookie Erin Crocker and turning over, narrowed the gap to three car-lengths in dense lapped traffic by the ninth lap, however.

Third Heat Race winner Donny Schatz raced wheel-to-wheel with “The King of the Outlaws” throughout the 13th lap, but was unable to pass him for sixth place.

Rookies Brian Brown and Jonathan Allard collided in turn four while battling for 11th place late in lap 22. Brown stopped following the collision, but Allard turned the #35 PRT Travel Maxim completely around and continued racing to maintain the position.

Meyers raced away from Kraig Kinser when the green flag replaced the yellow, and opened a four-car-length advantage within five laps. Allard and Brown collided again late in lap 29 when the #35 spun in the fourth corner, taking the leaders out of lapped traffic and setting up a six-lap dash to the checkered flag.

Kraig Kinser challenged Meyers with an inside move through turns three and four two laps after the race resumed, but was unable to surge ahead. Kraig, racing as intensely as his father – defending and 18-time series champion Steve Kinser – threatened to take the lead between the third and fourth corners again the next time around, but Meyers managed to keep the #14 ahead.

Meyers was only a car-length ahead of his closest pursuers when he caught the back-marker with 1½ laps remaining. Shane Stewart drove the #4M Ol’ Glory Maxim past Kraig Kinser for the runner-up spot in the low groove between turns three and four late in the final lap, but was three car-lengths behind when Meyers took the checkered flag.

“I was getting a little tight there at the end,” Meyers said. “Under that (last) caution I could see Steve (Swenson) telling me to move down, but I was a little too tight there. We hit traffic in those last couple of laps, and the traffic actually saved me. If anyone’s out there from the big track (Talladega Superspeedway), that’s where I want to go, so maybe we were able to open a few eyes tonight. I want to thank everyone for coming out tonight, and I hope you all enjoyed the races.”

Kraig Kinser improved four positions – from seventh to third – in the point standings with his third top-five “A” Feature finish of the season. Lasoski finished fourth, ahead of Saldana, Steve Kinser, Schatz, Daryn Pittman, Travis Rilat and 15th-starting Tyler Walker.

Tim Shaffer made a success of a roller-coaster evening. The 1999 Rookie of the Year was the second-fastest qualifier, but collided with Brown and finished last in the Second Heat Race. Shaffer won the “B” Feature and drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle past six cars to finish 11th in the main event.

Steve Kinser paced the qualifying session with a 12.380-second lap around Talladega’s high-banked, 1/3-mile oval.

Dollansky Leads Flag-to-Flag in I-55 Victory

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

PEVELY, MO (April 17) – Craig Dollansky’s roller coaster season took an upward turn Saturday at I-55 Raceway.

“The Crowd Pleaser,” who suffered ankle injuries at Manzanita Speedway in February and lost the lead when he crashed with a lapped car Friday, dominated Saturday’s World of Outlaws Sprint Series “A” Feature at I-55 Raceway.

“This definitely helps,” Dollansky said after leading all 40 laps in the main event. “We had the fastest car last night before we got taken out by a lapped car. I think that with D.J. Lindsey and Rod Fauver I’ve got the best crew I’ve ever had, and they gave me a great racecar all night. Along with everyone else who makes this happen: Scott Boyd, VMAC, Hoosier tires, Charlie Garrett engines, and Maxim Chassis.”

The $10,000 victory, Dollansky’s first of the season, pushed him from 10th to eighth place in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series point standings.

Dollansky, the fifth-fastest qualifier in the 45-car field, earned the right to start the main event outside the second row by following Donny Schatz across the finish line in the Second Dash Race.

Schatz passed pole-sitter Jason Sides in the first corner, but his #15 Parker Store J&J hooked the cushion and flipped in turn two within seconds after the green flag fell in the “A” Feature. Dollansky, who moved up to the front row as a result of Schatz’s crash, won a front-straightaway drag race with Sides when the race resumed. World of Outlaws Sprint Series points leader Steve Kinser collided with Fourth Heat Race winner Jerrod Hull and flipped in turn one, forcing a second restart.

Dollansky beat Sides down the front stretch when the green flag replaced the red. Sides drove the #7S Sides Motorsports Maxim past Dollansky in the low groove in the first corner, only to have “The Crowd Pleaser” regain the lead in turn two.

Tyler Walker and Daryn Pittman, who started inside the seventh row, passed Joey Saldana during laps three and five to take over third and fourth place.

Dollansky had the #7 VMAC Maxim 20 car-lengths ahead of Sides when he entered lapped traffic six laps into the race. The 2003 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year narrowed the gap to 10 car-lengths in dense lapped traffic two laps later, but brushed the outside retaining wall in the second corner early in the 10th lap which allowed Dollansky to extend his advantage.

Sides, who won the Second Heat Race, steadily gained on “The Crowd Pleaser” during the next nine laps, and was 10 car-lengths behind midway through the race.

Fast-qualifier Tim Shaffer surrendered ninth place early in the 29th lap when he stopped on the front straightaway with a flat right rear tire. Fresh rubber on the #83 Beef Packers Eagle allowed Shaffer to race back into seventh place within four laps.

A flat right rear tire on the #14 Elite Landscaping Maxim forced Jason Meyers to stop on the front stretch early in lap 35. Sides discovered his right rear tire was losing air during the caution, but continued circling the high-banked, 1/3-mile oval to maintain pressure in the tire.

Shaffer continued his run to the front when the green flag replaced the yellow, racing past Saldana and Walker to take over fourth place. Erin Crocker bicycled and spun into Kraig Kinser and Jesse Hockett the next time around, bringing out the caution flag and setting up a four-lap dash to the checkered flag.

Shaffer, racing in the middle groove, used a slide move to pass Pittman and Sides in turn one as the race resumed. Pittman steered the #21 Hop & Sack CMC into the low groove in the second corner to regain the runner-up spot.

Dollansky raced away from his closest pursuers during the final restart, and took the checkered flag with 10 car-lengths to spare.

“I was floating around on the top at the beginning of the race, so we were able to save the tires some here,” Dollansky said. “I’ve been here before when the track takes rubber as the race goes on, and I just wanted to be sure I saw it in time because I’ve lost races that way before. I came back from a pretty tough injury last year, and I have to thank my family, and Dr. (Terry) Trammell for all of their support. It’s great to get back to victory lane.”

Shaffer’s miraculous third-place run during the final 12 laps pushed him into fourth place in the point standings. Walker finished fourth, ahead of Sides, Saldana, Hull, Paul McMahan, Brooke Tatnell and 19th-starting Shane Stewart.

Shaffer paced the qualifying session with a 115.212-M.P.H. lap around Pevely’s 1/3-mile oval.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ fire-breathing, mudslinging sprint cars will run $51,600 events at Batesville Speedway Thursday and at the Talladega Short Track Saturday.

Kinser Wins Sedalia Feature After Dollansky Crashes

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

SEDALIA, MO (April 16) – Steve Kinser inherited first place when Craig Dollansky crashed and held off early leader Shane Stewart to win Friday’s World of Outlaws Sprint Series “A” Feature at Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway.

Dollansky, who passed Stewart for the lead late in the 20th lap, lost the lead when he collided with “B” Feature winner Jason Johnson three laps later. “The King of the Outlaws” restarted ahead of the 24-car field and beat Stewart under the checkered flag by eight car-lengths.

“I found a little rubber there on the bottom in (turns) one and two and, actually, a little bit on the bottom in three and four, but I didn’t want to show it until I could get a run on those guys,” Kinser said. “Craig was running pretty good, but I think I would have gotten by him if he hadn’t found the rubber. This Quaker State car has been strong right out of the box this year, and we just keep finding a way to get the job done.”

The victory, Kinser’s fifth of the season, gave him a 97-point advantage over second-place Danny Lasoski in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series standings. The $10,000 victory was Kinser’s fourth at Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway and the 502nd of his incomparable career.

“The King of the Outlaws,” the fourth-fastest qualifier in the 29-car field, finished fourth in the Third Heat Race. He earned the privilege of starting the 25-lap main event outside the second row by following Stewart across the finish line in the Second Dash Race.

Stewart drove the #4M Ol’ Glory Maxim past pole-sitter Kraig Kinser as the green flag fell in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ eighth main event of the season. Dollansky passed Kraig with an inside move between the third and fourth corners late in the opening lap.

Kinser exchanged fifth place with Joey Saldana and Lasoski during the first five laps. Billy Alley, making his World of Outlaws Sprint Series debut, spun in turn one to bring out the caution flag early in the sixth lap.

“The King of the Outlaws” steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim to the lowest point in the second corner to pass “The Dude” for fourth place early in lap seven.

Mechanical problems in the #75 VKCC Motorsports car forced Jesse Hockett to stop in turn four late in the 11th lap. Kinser passed his son, Kraig, for third place with an inside move between the first and second corners as the green flag replaced the yellow.

First Heat Race winner Brian Paulus stopped in turn four with a blown engine the next time around. Jason Meyers had the #14 Elite Landscaping Maxim on the move after the race resumed, passing Saldana, Lasoski and Kraig Kinser during the next five laps to take over fourth place.

Dollansky drove the #7 VMAC Maxim past Stewart between the third and fourth corners to take the lead late in lap 20. Kinser used a similar move to pass Stewart between turns one and two several seconds later.

Dollansky was trying to lap Johnson in the third corner late in the 23rd lap when their collision cost “The Crowd Pleaser” the lead. Kinser raced away from Stewart as the green flag replaced the yellow and took the checkered flag with eight car-lengths to spare.

Meyers, who started inside the fifth row, finished in third place, while Saldana recorded his third straight top-five feature finish since joining the Volcano Joe’s Coffee team 10 days before. Kraig Kinser finished in fifth place, ahead of Paul McMahan, Lasoski, Tim Shaffer, Second Heat Race winner Donny Schatz and Daryn Pittman.

McMahan and Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year leader Kraig Kinser headed to Saturday’s I-55 Raceway event tied for fourth place in the point standings. Stewart climbed from 18th to 15th in the standings with his fourth top-five finish of the season.

Shaffer drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle past 12 cars to finish in eighth place. Brooke Tatnell raced into 14th place from inside the 11th row.

Toni Lutar paced the qualifying session with a 111.885-M.P.H. lap around Sedalia’s semi-banked, ½-mile oval. After a flat right rear tire took him out of the First Heat Race, Lutar finished second in the “B” Feature and 17th in the main event.

Lasoski’s car owner, 2002 NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart, won Sedalia’s 360-sprint car race for the second straight year.

World of Outlaws Alters Seat Belt Rules

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

ATLANTA, GA (April 12) – In the interests of safety, World of Outlaws Sprint Series Technical Director Martin Willis announced Monday that seat belt webbing coming into contact with any sharp or unradiused metal edge shall be protected from that edge by means of push-on grip vinyl trim.

The areas of concern are the webbing slots in the metal racing seats. All seat manufacturers either roll the edge or supply the seat with trim protecting the webbing from abrasion or cutting under impact conditions. Webbing entry slots into the seat with an existing metal roll of 1/8-inch smooth radius will not require vinyl trim.

Where the webbing slot has been enlarged by filing or cutting is of particular concern. In most instances the edges have been left sharp, increasing the incidence of potential belt failure. As racing seat belts are subjected to severe conditions, it is encouraged that undamaged belts be replaced every 24 months. The date sewn onto the webbing should be used as a guide. Where the seat belt date is known to be "new old stock," it is acceptable practice to extend the replacement date on a set of belts to 36 months from date of manufacture. Damaged belts should be replaced immediately.

This is one area that the World of Outlaws would rather be proactive in their approach to their series. The regulations covering the newly formed World of Outlaws Late Model Series specifically cover the sharp edge issue. The belt replacement intervals are encouraged for the late models as well. The webbing protection from sharp edges will take immediate effect. In an effort to assist competitors in complying, vinyl trim courtesy of ButlerBuilt will be available from the World of Outlaws Sprint Series tech trailer for a limited period.

Kinser Completes Eldora Sweep With Last-Lap Pass

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

ROSSBURG, OH (April 10) – Danny Lasoski was less than a lap from winning his first World of Outlaws Sprint Series “A” Feature at Eldora Speedway Saturday when Steve Kinser stole his thunder.

“The King of the Outlaws” drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past Lasoski deep in the first corner and completed his sweep of the double-feature event when he won the “A” Feature by three car-lengths.

“There wasn’t anything patient about that,” Kinser told the capacity crowd witnessing the World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ 100th main event at Eldora Speedway. “I ran as hard as I could the whole race. I was a little bit loose getting off both corners, and I moved around a little bit and found the middle in (turns) three and four. I really didn’t think I was going to get him (Lasoski), but there were a couple of lapped cars there and I got a really good run off the middle in three and four coming down for the white flag. This place is pretty special to me. I’ve been running here since I started racing in 1977, and I’ve won a lot of races here.”

The $12,000 victory, Kinser’s 30th at “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile,” increased his advantage in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series standings to 83 points over Lasoski. Kinser has won both the Preliminary and “A” Features in two of the three double-feature events the series has run in 2004.

“The Dude,” who earned the privilege of starting the 30-lap main event on the pole by beating Kinser under the checkered flag in the Dash Race, started the “A” Feature with a fresh engine. The World of Outlaws Sprint Series 2001 champion burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, and was a full straightaway ahead of “The King of the Outlaws” when he entered lapped traffic seven laps into the race. Kinser closed to within eight car-lengths within two laps, however.

Kinser’s son, Kraig, started making his way toward the front during the race’s middle stages, driving the #11K Delco-Remy Maxim past Craig Dollansky and Chad Kemenah during the 11th and 15th laps to take over fifth place. Although the leader in the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year race eventually finished seventh, he improved two positions to fifth place in the point standings.

Kinser’s cousin, Mark Kinser, was the evening’s fastest qualifier. The two-time World of Outlaws Sprint Series champion crashed with Jason Sides and Dean Jacobs during the First Heat Race, but won the “B” Feature. He drove father Karl Kinser’s #5M SABKO Maxim past Kemenah, Kraig Kinser, Donny Schatz and Joey Saldana between the 15th and 19th laps to claim third place in the main event.

Lasoski had NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle 10 car-lengths ahead of Steve Kinser with 5½ laps remaining. “The King of the Outlaws” narrowed the gap to eight car-lengths within two laps and was only five car-lengths behind during lap 28.

Kinser raced through the low groove in the fourth corner as the leaders completed the 29th lap, then took the lead with an inside move in turn one en route to his fourth “A” Feature victory of the season.

Mark Kinser, who paced the qualifying session with a 135.706-M.P.H. lap around Earl Baltes’ high-banked, ½-mile oval, finished in third place. Dollansky finished fourth, ahead of Saldana, Schatz, Kraig Kinser, Kemenah, Sammy Swindell and 21st-starting Dale Blaney. Dollansky’s fourth-place run pushed him into eighth place in the point standings.

Tyler Walker raced into 11th place from inside the ninth row, and Paul McMahan drove Dave Helm’s #11H Selma Shell Maxim past 12 cars to finish 12th.

Jason Meyers, the fourth-fastest qualifier in the 47-car field, failed to qualify for the “A” Feature in the Fourth Heat Race and the “B” Feature. Meyers used a provisional to start the main event and drove the #14 Elite Landscaping Maxim into 23rd place.

The World of Outlaws’ fire-breathing, mudslinging sprint cars will run $51,600 events at Sedalia’s State Fair Speedway Friday and at I-55 Raceway Saturday.

'King of the Outlaws' Wins Eldora Speedway Preliminary

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

ROSSBURG, OH (April 9) – Steve Kinser won Friday’s Preliminary Feature in much the same manner he has many of the World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ first 99 main events at Eldora Speedway.

“The King of the Outlaws” challenged Tyler Walker for several laps before taking the lead, then held off Danny Lasoski through the final 12 laps around “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile” for the victory.

“Danny and I were having our own little race there coming off turn four, and I guess we forgot about the rest of the guys back there,” Kinser said. “We set our car up for the end of the race. When they water this place right before the feature, it makes the bottom pretty good at the beginning until they throw it back up the racetrack. We were actually a little tight tonight, but we were good enough to get the job done.

”We’ve raced here for a lot of years (26-plus) – pretty much as long as I’ve been racing – and it would be great to win the 100th World of Outlaws race here. This team of mine has been doing a great job for the last couple of years, and it’s just been a pleasure being able to drive a car this good.”

Kinser and Lasoski won the Dash Races and started on the front row. They were battling each other for the lead when Walker – who started outside the second row – drove Guy Forbrook’s #5 Wirtgen/MPD Hand Controls Maxim around them in the high groove early in the opening lap.

Walker was a half-straightaway ahead of Kinser when he entered lapped traffic four laps later. “The King of the Outlaws” narrowed the gap to eight car-lengths in dense traffic during the 10th lap, and caught Walker two laps later.

Kinser, whose crew replaced the engine in his #11 Quaker State Maxim following the hot-lap sessions, raced wheel-to-wheel with the 2002 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion through the third and fourth corners late in lap 13, but was unable to surge ahead. The World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ defending and 18-time champion won a back-straightaway drag race with Walker midway through the 14th lap, and opened a half-straightaway advantage within two laps.

Lasoski, the series’ 2001 champion, steered NASCAR Winston Cup titleist Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle into the low groove in turn four to pass Walker late in the 19th lap. Donny Schatz, who won Eldora’s Historical Big One two years ago, used a similar move to pass Walker the next time around. Fast qualifier Daryn Pittman raced into fourth place as Walker’s engine started losing power late in lap 21.

Joey Saldana, making his debut in Larry Woodward’s #2 Volcano Joe’s Coffee Maxim, took the inside line through turn four to pass Pittman late in the 22nd lap, then duplicated the move to pass Schatz for third place as they headed for the checkered flag.

Kinser claimed his third Preliminary Feature victory of the season with 10 car-lengths to spare. The $5,000 victory pushed him 73 points ahead of Schatz in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series point standings. “The Dude” improved three positions to third place with Friday’s runner-up run.

Schatz finished in fourth place, ahead of Pittman, Mark Kinser, 16th-starting Jason Sides, Sammy Swindell, Chad Kemenah and Tyler Walker.

Mark Kinser, racing with the World of Outlaws Sprint Series for the first time in 2004, appeared to be in mid-season form. The three-time series qualified 10th quick in the 46-car field, then drove father Karl Kinser’s #5M SABKO Maxim into sixth place from inside the sixth row in the evening’s main event.

Craig Dollansky, who set Eldora’s single-lap record with a 141.654-M.P.H. lap on April 13, 2002, drove Karavan Motorsports’ #7 VMAC Maxim past 11 cars to finish 11th. Jason Meyers, the winner of the World of Outlaws Sprint Series “A” Feature at Eldora Speedway last August 8th, drove the #14 Elite Landscaping Maxim into 12th place from outside the 10th row. Steve Kinser’s son, Kraig, passed nine cars to finish 14th.

Pittman paced the qualifying session with a 136.685-M.P.H. lap around Earl Baltes’ high-banked, ½-mile oval. The series’ 2002 Manufacturers’ Hard Charger Award winner moved into fifth place in the point standings with his fifth-place run in the Preliminary Feature.

Full Throttle Racing Hires Jason Johnson

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

RUNNELLS, IA (April 8) – Full Throttle Racing has hired Jason Johnson to drive its #50D Cox Design & Metal Fabrication Maxim, Debbie Cox and Team Manager Derek Beckman announced Thursday.

Johnson, who put together a miraculous charge to win the World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ Cheaper Than Dirt Shootout at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track last October 11th, will join the Cox team for the series’ double-feature event at Eldora Speedway this weekend.

“We’re pleased to have Jason drive for us,” Cox said. “He is super, nice young man. We want to continue to run as many Outlaws shows as we can and we expect Jason to do a good job for us.”

Beckman, who drove the #50D for several years before becoming the team’s manager this year, hired Johnson after Joey Saldana left the team to drive the #2 Volcano Joe’s Coffee Maxim earlier in the week.

“Jason called a few days ago and said he was very interested in joining our team,” Beckman said. “He flew up here and we talked about it. He seems like a really nice kid and I know he can get the job done, so we hired him. Jason should give (five-time Knoxville Raceway champion) Terry McCarl a run for his money.

“We will race with the World of Outlaws until Knoxville Raceway starts its weekly program April 24th. After the World of Outlaws race at Knoxville at the end of the month, we will catch the series when we can. Once Knoxville’s season ends, we will race with the Outlaws again.”

Saldana drove the Cox Design & Fabrication sprinter in four World of Outlaws Sprint Series events, pacing the qualifying session in the Texas Shootout at Houston Raceway Park and finishing 10th in the NGK Spark Plugs Shootout at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track. The 1996 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year also raced into eighth place in the Preliminary Feature at Lone Star Speedway.

Johnson, nicknamed “The Cajun Sensation,” recorded four top-five finishes in World of Outlaws Sprint Series main events last season, including a third-place run in the prestigious Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway.

Saldana Takes Reins of #2 Volcano Joe’s Maxim

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

ROSSBURG, OH (April 6) – Joey Saldana is the new driver of the #2 Volcano Joe’s Coffee Maxim that races with the World of Outlaws Sprint Series, the 1996 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year announced Tuesday.

Saldana, who replaces Dean Jacobs as team owner Larry Woodward’s new driver, ranks 14th in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series point standings. Joey drove his family’s #17 Maxim and Full-Throttle Racing’s #50D Cox Design and Metal Fabricating Maxim during the first six events of the season. “The Brownsburg Bullet,” who has won 12 “A” Features in his World of Outlaws Sprint Series career, finished 10th in Saturday’s NGK Spark Plugs Shootout at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track and paced the qualifying session in the Texas Shootout at Houston Raceway Park a week before.

“I don’t really like telling somebody I’m going to do something and change, but I’m glad for the opportunity to race with the World of Outlaws full-time again,” Saldana said. “I’ve tried to run with the World of Outlaws for the last four years and the #50D car is going to run for the Knoxville Raceway championship. It’s tough to find a ride out there. You never like to quit anybody or tell somebody you’re going to do something and not do it, but I have to look out for myself and running with the World of Outlaws is what I want to do. Any time a full-time World of Outlaws ride is open, I’m interested.

“I had heard they were going to do something different through people who are involved with the team and they were looking to make a change. I got a call last night at 6 o’clock and at 8:30 Dave Razowsky, the team manager for Larry Woodward, met with me at my parents’ house, and by 9:30 the deal was done. The team uses pretty much what I’m used to – Charlie Fisher Motors, Maxim Chassis, Hoosier Tires and Mox Trucking. I’ve used a lot of that equipment for the last six years. It’s going to be good to be back with Charlie and Steve Mox. I just feel like this is going to be a better deal for my family and me in the long run. We’re going to race at Eldora Speedway this weekend and, hopefully, we can do well for him. I’m definitely going to give 100 percent.”

Jacobs ranks 13th in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series point standings through six events. He has recorded a pair of top-10 finishes in Preliminary Features, but has not finished higher than 12th in a main event.

Saldana, who finished in the top 13 in four of five World of Outlaws Sprint Series main events at Eldora Speedway last season, claimed the $50,000 first prize in the 2002 Kings Royal. He enjoyed his best season with the series a year ago, finishing third in the point standings.

Eldora to Host 100th Outlaws Event this Weekend

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

ROSSBURG, OH (April 5) – The World of Outlaws Sprint Series and Eldora Speedway will celebrate milestones this weekend when sprint car racing’s premier series invades “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile.”

The World of Outlaws will run its 100th event at Eldora, while Earl Baltes and his staff celebrate the facility’s 50th Anniversary.

“Earl Baltes was very instrumental with us getting the World of Outlaws started back in 1978,” World of Outlaws Sprint Series President Ted Johnson said Monday. “He booked the second race and brought in Jimmy Boyd and other well-known drivers from all over the country. Since then, Eldora has been our home track and we’re proud to have raced there more any other facility. We’ve run some great races there. The fans love it and they always fill the place.”

Defending and 18-time series champion Steve Kinser will lead the World of Outlaws Sprint Series into the double-feature event. “The King of the Outlaws” leads the race for the 2004 series championship by 70 points over Donny Schatz and Tim Shaffer. Kinser, who won the 500th “A” Feature of his career March 27th, has won 29 at Eldora Speedway. He crossed the finish line first in four of the five main events the series ran at Eldora in 2003, but was disqualified when he failed to comply with the weight rule last April 19th.

Sammy Swindell, who received credit for that $10,000 victory, has won 15 World of Outlaws Sprint Series “A” Features at Eldora Speedway. Bobby “Scruffy” Allen won the series’ first main event at Eldora Speedway on April 16, 1978.

Jason Meyers, who hit the retaining wall and almost spun a lap after taking the lead late in the race, held off hard charging Ohioan Jac Haudenschild to win the World of Outlaws Sprint Series main event at Eldora last August 8th. Meyers, who drove Karavan Motorsports’ #7 VMAC Maxim after Craig Dollansky suffered a back injury last May, led the final 8 2/3 laps to win his second “A” Feature of the World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ 25th Anniversary Season.

Dollansky, who set Eldora Speedway’s single-lap record with a 141.654-M.P.H. lap on April 13, 2002, also won the main event that night. “The Crowd Pleaser” ranks 11th in the point standings with four top-10 finishes, including a pair of runner-up runs, in six main events this year.

Shaffer, the series’ 1999 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year, won “A” Features at “The Big E” in 1999 and 2000. World of Outlaws Sprint Series regulars Daryn Pittman and Joey Saldana have each won an “A” Feature at Eldora Speedway in recent years.

Mark Kinser, who won series championships in 1996 and 1999, has won six main events at “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile.” Dave Blaney, the World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ 1995 champion, won five “A” Features at Eldora. Former World of Outlaws Sprint Series Director of Competition Rick Ferkel won four “A” Features at “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile.”

Haudenschild, who lives in Wooster, OH, is a four-time winner at Eldora Speedway. Andy Hillenburg, the series’ Rookie of the Year in 1988, won two main events at Eldora.

Brad Doty, the color commentator on The Outdoor Channel’s World of Outlaws Sprint Series telecasts, won an “A” Feature at Eldora Speedway on May 22, 1983. The Outdoor Channel will tape this weekend’s action for its April 28th “Wednesday Night Horsepower” show. Each one-hour telecast will begin at 8 p.m. every Wednesday during the racing season and will be replayed Saturdays at 8 a.m. Eastern Time and Thursdays at 10 p.m. Pacific Time.

Eldora Speedway’s gates at scheduled to open at 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Hot laps will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the green flag will drop for the First Heat Race at 8 p.m. each evening.

Tickets for fans 16 and older will cost $23 Friday and $25 Saturday. Fans between the ages of 13 and 15 can purchase tickets for $10 Friday and $12 Saturday. Tickets for children who are between 7 and 12 will cost $5 Friday and $6 Saturday, and youngsters six years old and under will be admitted free of charge.

Paulus Wins NGK Spark Plugs Shootout With Late Pass

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

FORT WORTH, TX (April 3) – Kraig Kinser was 2¼ laps from joining his father in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series victory column Saturday when Brian Paulus spoiled the party.

Paulus took the low line into the fourth corner to pass Kinser for the lead and kept the #28 Arnold Transportation Maxim ahead to win the NGK Spark Plugs Shootout at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.

“Something was not right with our motor, so I moved my line to the low groove,” said Paulus, who hugged Texas Motor Speedway mascot Sparky in victory lane. “It was much shorter than Kraig’s line, and it worked out for us. If I could get past the lapped cars, I knew I could get closer to him.”

The $10,000 victory was the second in World of Outlaws Sprint Series competition for Paulus, who won his first main event last August 6th with a last-lap pass of Donny Schatz.

Ironically, the second runner-up run of Kinser’s World of Outlaws Sprint Series career came almost two years before at the Texas Motor Speedway when Brad Furr won the main event.

“We were out front with lots of room,” said Kraig, who is racing for the 2004 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year award. “I just chose the wrong line.”

Steve Kinser, who won his 500th “A” Feature a week earlier at Houston Raceway Park, patted his son on the back and said, “You ran a great race.”

Paulus, the eighth-fastest qualifier in the 30-car field, won the Second Heat Race and the First Dash Race for the privilege of starting the 30-lap main event on the pole. Paulus and outside pole-sitter Brooke Tatnell were battling for first place early in the opening lap when Kinser raced between them for the lead in the second corner.

Tatnell drove the #66 Trop Artic Eagle past Paulus a lap before Tyler Walker spun into the infield between turns three and four late in lap five. Tatnell, the only Australian driver to ever win a World of Outlaws Sprint Series main event, battled Kinser for the lead until Paulus challenged him for the runner-up spot three laps later.

Tatnell caught Kinser during lap 11 and threatened to take the lead several times during the race’s middle stages. “B” Feature winner Craig Dollansky raced into 11th place from inside the 11th row during the first half of the race before the #7 VMAC Maxim suffered a blown engine early in lap 17.

Tatnell was challenging Kinser for the lead three laps later when his engine lost power, causing him to stop on the back straightaway. Kinser drove the #11K Delco-Remy Maxim away from the field as the race resumed, only to have Paulus catch him as they approached lapped traffic early in the 27th lap.

Paulus raced wheel-to-wheel with Kinser down the back stretch the next time around, and took the lead several seconds later. Kinser tried to regain first place during the final two laps, but was unable to surge ahead. Paulus improved two positions in the point standings to fifth place with his second top-five finish of the season.

Meyers finished in third place, ahead of Shane Stewart, Steve Kinser, Jason Sides, First Heat Race winner Daryn Pittman, Paul McMahan, 14th-starting Tim Shaffer and Joey Saldana.

Sammy Swindell, driving Bob Veilhauer’s #12X Beaver Drill & Tool Maxim for the first time in World of Outlaws Sprint Series competition, enjoyed a roller-coaster evening. The three-time series champion raced into fourth place from back of the pack after colliding with Dean Jacobs in the Second Heat Race, then passed 12 cars to finish 11th in the “A” Feature.

Australian Kerry Madsen, who swept the Preliminary Features in the World of Outlaws ‘Down Under’ event three months earlier, paced the qualifying session with a 102.857-M.P.H. lap around the semi-banked, 4/10-mile oval. After failing to qualify for the main event in the First Heat Race, Madsen drove the #55 TK Concrete Twister into 12th place from inside the ninth row.

Steve Kinser, a two-time winner at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, increased his World of Outlaws Sprint Series points lead to 70 points with his fifth top-five finish in six events. Shaffer moved into a second-place tie with Schatz, who finished 15th. Stewart, who won his first World of Outlaws Sprint Series main event eight days earlier at Thunder Valley Speedway, climbed into 16th place in the point standings with his third top-five finish of the year.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Series will run a double-feature event at Eldora Speedway Friday and Saturday.

Lasoski Wins IROC Race at Texas Motor Speedway

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

FORT WORTH, TX (April 2) – Danny Lasoski made the World of Outlaws proud Friday at Texas Motor Speedway.

“The Dude” became the second World of Outlaws Sprint Series driver to win a Crown Royal International Race of Champions event. Lasoski led all 67 laps from the pole position, beating NASCAR Nextel Cup racer Kevin Harvick under the checkered flag by .333 seconds.

“I owe IROC a debt of gratitude,” Lasoski said. “It was an honor to race here and represent the World of Outlaws. This is a dream come true. I can’t believe this; I know I won’t sleep all night.

“I’m so honored to be in this series. I’d probably pay to race these cars. I love to compete, and these guys are the best in the world. The Knoxville Nationals is near and dear to my heart. I’ve been fortunate enough to win it three times, but this victory tonight is very special to me also.”

When asked how it feels to be the first World of Outlaws Sprint Series driver since Steve Kinser to win an IROC race, Lasoski said. “Any time your name is mentioned in the same breath as Steve Kinser, it’s a real honor.”

Kinser, who won the third IROC race he ever entered in 1994 at Talladega Superspeedway, congratulated Lasoski in victory lane. “The King of the Outlaws” finished eighth in Friday’s race, the IROC’s first at Texas Motor Speedway.

Within seconds after taking the checkered flag, “The Dude” started a miraculous victory celebration like nobody had ever seen at Texas Motor Speedway. Lasoski turned doughnuts in the grass between the front straightway and pit road and his front-stretch burnouts sent white smoke billowing into the grandstands. When the smoke cleared, “The Dude” was in victory lane.

“I told (Texas Motor Speedway General Manager) Eddie Gossage before the race, if I won he was going to have to buy some new sod, as I was going to celebrate,” Lasoski said. “I’d like to talk Jay (Signore, IROC’s president) into buying 12 sprint cars, so we could do it in the dirt.”

Lasoski, who finished last in the 2004 IROC season opener at Daytona International Speedway in February, ranks third in the standings – only one point behind Harvick and Ryan Newman – as the series heads to Richmond International Raceway (September 9th) for the third of series’ four races. The 2004 IROC champion will receive $1 million.

“I can’t wait to get to Richmond now,” Lasoski said. “It will be more suited to the way Steve (Kinser) and I race.”

Lasoski burst into the lead as the green flag fell, and was starting to build a comfortable advantage when NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers Matt Kenseth and defending IROC champion Kurt Busch crashed between turns three and four late in the third lap.

Harvick, who started outside the sixth row, raced into second place within two laps after the race resumed. “The Dude” maintained a .2-second or better advantage throughout the final 62 laps despite a competition caution that tightened the field with 15 laps remaining.

“With five laps to go I told myself, ‘if Harvick is going to beat me, he’ll have to run right through me,’” said Lasoski, who averaged 116.983 M.P.H. in the 100.5-mile race. “Tony (Stewart, Lasoski’s World of Outlaws Sprint Series car owner) talked to me before the race. He kept preaching to save my right front tire and go after it in the final 10 laps. Winning this race was the toughest thing I’ve ever done, and I’m the happiest guy in the world right now.”

World of Outlaws to Sanction NGK Spark Plugs Shootout

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

FORT WORTH, TX (March 30) – The fierce competition for the World of Outlaws Sprint Series points lead turned the United States Air Force Showdown into one of the most exciting races in series history last March 29th at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.

After exchanging first place with each other and Chad Kemenah four times, World of Outlaws Sprint Series rivals Steve Kinser and Danny Lasoski remained four points apart in their battle for the series championship.

Kinser, the defending and 18-time champion, beat “The Dude” under the checkered flag by 1.1 seconds to claim the $20,000 first prize.

“It was a tough race,” Kinser told Texas Motor Speedway General Manager Eddie Gossage in victory lane. “I want to thank you and the Air Force. Danny and I, I think we’re going to have a lot of these (tough races) this year. It was a great race. Those last few laps were back and forth. I had to shut the door on him or he was going to get by me.”

Kinser drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim to victory in the World of Outlaws “Down Under” event in Australia, in the Cactus Classic at Manzanita Speedway, swept the Las Vegas Outlaw Nationals and claimed his 500th “A” Feature victory in the Texas Shootout at Houston Raceway Park last Saturday.

“The King of the Outlaws” will have plenty of competition for the $10,000 first prize when the World of Outlaws’ fire-breathing, mudslinging sprint cars return to the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track for the NGK Spark Plugs Shootout Saturday. Sixteen drivers are racing fulltime with the series this season and 18 won main events in 2003.

After winning seven “A” Features and five preliminaries a year ago, Donny Schatz – the Motorsport Video Hard Charger award winner – is on a mission to put his #15 Parker Store J&J on the fast track to the 2004 series championship. He moved into second place in the standings with a runner-up run at Houston Raceway Park.

Tim Shaffer has driven Roth Motorsports’ #83 Beef Packers Eagle into the top 10 in four of the five main events and ranks third in the point standings.

Danny Lasoski, the 2001 World of Outlaws Sprint Series champion, has already set fast time in five racing programs this season. “The Dude,” who drives NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle, is only two points behind Shaffer.

Paul McMahan ranks fifth in the standings – only five points behind Lasoski – after driving Dave Helms’ #11H Selma Shell Maxim into the top 10 in four of five main events.

Tough Craig Dollansky ignored the ankle injuries he suffered at Manzanita Speedway and raced into second place in three straight feature races to rank sixth in the point standings after five events.

Brian Paulus drove Dawne Pender’s #28 Maxim past Schatz late in the final lap to win the first “A” Feature of his World of Outlaws career at Hartford Speedway Park last August 6th. He has recorded four top-10 finishes, including one in the top five, this season.

Daryn Pittman, who received the Manufacturers’ Hard Charger Award in 2002, drove the #21 Hop & Sack CMC to victory in three main events last year. He has finished in top 10 in all five main events in 2004.

Jason Sides, the 2003 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year award winner, spun under the checkered flag just inches behind Pittman to finish second at The Raceway at Powercom Park last August 3rd.

Jason Meyers drove the #14 Elite Landscaping Maxim to victory at Perris Auto Speedway after Kinser suffered a flat tire less than a lap from the checkered flag. He ranks 11th in the point standings.

Tyler Walker, the 2002 World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion, ranks 12th in the point standings after three events. He won the Preliminary Feature in the Cactus Classic at Manzanita Speedway, but the #5 Wirtgen Maxim has suffered mechanical problems in recent weeks.

Dean Jacobs, who finished 16th in the World of Outlaws point standings in 2000, is the new driver of Larry Woodward’s #2 Volcano Joe’s Coffee Maxim.

Shane Stewart, whose team received the Best Appearing Crew award during the 2003 Knoxville Nationals, drove Scott Chilcutt’s #4M Ol’ Glory Maxim to his first World of Outlaws Sprint Series main event victory last Friday at Thunder Valley Speedway.

Kraig Kinser, Erin Crocker, Jonathan Allard and Brian Brown form the strongest rookie class in World of Outlaws history as they battle for the 2004 Kevin Gobrecht award.

Kraig Kinser, Steve Kinser’s son, ranked 15th in the World of Outlaws point standings a year ago. He finished second in the main event at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track in April of 2002. Kraig has driven the #11K Delco-Remy Maxim into ninth place in the point standings through this season’s first five events.

Crocker, the first female to qualify for the Knoxville Nationals championship feature, became the first driver – male or female – to receive the Wild Card Awards for exciting sprint car performances in the 360- and 410-cubic inch National Sprint Car Polls in the same season in 2003. Erin drives the #16 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute J&J for former racer Mike Woodring.

Allard, the Silver Dollar Speedway champion in 2002, ranked 23rd in the World of Outlaws point standings a year ago. Jonathan drives the #35W PRT Travel Maxim.

Brown, Lasoski’s nephew, ranked 21st in the 2003 World of Outlaws point standings. He drove Lonny Parsons’ #6 Casey’s General Stores Maxim to a career-best fourth-place finish at Hollywood Hills Speedway last September 13th.

Little-Known Facts About Steve Kinser's Career

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

BAYTOWN, TX (March 28) – Steve Kinser claimed the 500th victory of his World of Outlaws Sprint Series career Saturday, holding off Donny Schatz by half a car-length in the Fifth Annual Texas Shootout at Houston Raceway Park.

Here are some little-known facts concerning the incomparable career of “The King of the Outlaws.”

Kinser has won four races on March 27th.

“The King of the Outlaws” claimed his 100th World of Outlaws Sprint Series victory at Houston’s Big H Speedway on April 20, 1983. He has won 18 main events at Houston-area facilities: 10 at Big H Speedway, five at Houston Raceway Park and three at Battleground Speedway.

Kinser claimed victory #200 at Memphis Motorsports Park on August 22, 1987, victory #300 at San Jose Speedway on September 7, 1991, and victory #400 at Santa Maria Speedway and September 23, 1995.

Kinser has won more “A” Features at Knoxville Raceway (33, including 12 Knoxville Nationals championships) than any other racing facility.

“The King of the Outlaws” has won 29 main events at Eldora Speedway, including the first of his career there on May 21, 1978. Ironically, Kinser failed to comply with the World of Outlaws weight rule at “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile” last April 19th, and was disqualified despite crossing the finish line first.

Kinser has won 24 main events at Williams Grove Speedway and 22 at Tri-City Speedway.

“The King of the Outlaws” has claimed 11 Gold Cup Race of Champions titles at Silver Dollar Speedway and West Capital Speedway (1978, 1979).

“The King of the Outlaws” has won a single race at 44 different tracks and at 121 different facilities overall.

Kinser won 46 of the 69 “A” Features the World of Outlaws Sprint Series ran in 1987. Only eight drivers have won as many as 46 main events in their careers.

Of the 1,663 World of Outlaws Sprint Series has run in its 26-plus-year history, Kinser has won 30% of them.

Sammy Swindell ranks second on the World of Outlaws Sprint Series victory list with 260.

Despite finishing last in the first World of Outlaws Sprint Series main event at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on March 18, 1978, Kinser won the series’ inaugural championship.

Kinser has made a habit of winning when the World of Outlaws Sprint Series visits a racetrack for the first time. He has turned the trick 55 times in his career.

“The King of the Outlaws” won an IROC event at Talladega Superspeedway on April 30, 1994, in only his third race with the all-star series.

‘King of the Outlaws’ Wins #500 at Houston Raceway Park

Richard Day
WoO Director of Public Relations

BAYTOWN, TX (March 27) – The wait is over. Steve Kinser, the undisputed king of sprint car racing, has won his 500th World of Outlaws Sprint Series “A” Feature.

The defending and 18-time series champion drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past pole-sitter Brooke Tatnell late in the 10th lap of the Fifth Annual Texas Shootout at Houston Raceway Park Saturday, and held off a furious last-lap charge by Donny Schatz to claim the milestone victory by half a car-length.

“I’m just glad to get this one over with so we don’t have to hear about it any more,” Kinser said in victory lane. “Donny Schatz is one of those guys who gets better the longer the race goes on. I got to running the bottom of three and four pretty good through the middle of the race, but when I saw him beside me there, I really didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know if the top was any good, so I tried to stay low and block him, but I ended up missing the bottom. We were all pretty bottled up in traffic though.

“I have to thank Scott Gerkin. He’s the best crew chief out there right now, and he and all the guys on my team do so much to give me a great racecar night-in and night-out. Scott builds all my motors, and for a bunch of country boys from Indiana, I guess we don’t do too badly. I want to thank my wife Dana and my kids Stevie, Kraig and Kurt. I wish Kurt could have been here tonight, but he’s busy wrestling and boxing and living his own life.

“I’m just grateful to have a family that loves sprint car racing as much as I do. I always wanted to drive a racecar, but I figured I’d have to get a job and be lucky enough to race at home on the weekends. The World of Outlaws started just about the time that I did, and it seemed like back then I was one of the youngest guys in the pits. Now here I am one of the oldest, but winning races still means everything to me. I want to thank Quaker State for all they’ve done for me since I started my own race team (in 1995). They’ve been a big help in me being able to keep racing and winning. Maxim Chassis, Hoosier Tires, Jones Engineering, Sanders – they all give me the best equipment you can have. Most of all, I want to thank the fans. You’ve been great the whole time, and it’s been a pleasure being able to race for all of you.”

The victory, Kinser’s fifth in seven main events at Houston Raceway Park, pushed him 50 points ahead of Schatz in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series point standings.

“The King of the Outlaws,” the fourth-fastest qualifier in the 30-car field, earned the privilege of starting the 30-lap “A” Feature on the front row by winning the Second Dash Race.

Tatnell, the only Australian driver to ever win a World of Outlaws Sprint Series main event, drove the #66 Trop Artic Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the “A” Feature. Shane Stewart, a first-time winner at Thunder Valley Speedway Friday, hit the outside retaining wall early in the opening lap and lost 12 positions. Stewart stopped the severely damaged #4M Ol’ Glory Maxim on the back straightaway the next time around and retired to the pit area.

Tatnell raced away from Kinser as the race resumed, and opened a 10 car-length advantage by the seventh lap. “The King of the Outlaws” gained on Tatnell in lapped traffic, and passed him for the lead with an inside move in the fourth corner three laps later.

Jason Meyers, who won the February 28th Snap-on Tools Shootout at Perris Auto Speedway after Kinser lost the lead with a flat tire, started inside the sixth row. The 2000 World of Outlaws Gumout Series Rookie of the Year drove the #14 Elite Landscaping Maxim past five cars during the first 14 laps, and took fifth place from Kraig Kinser midway through the race.

Schatz steered his #15 Parker Store J&J around Brian Paulus and Tatnell during laps 16 and 18, while “The King of the Outlaws” opened a straightaway advantage. Meyers raced past Paulus in the low groove between turns three and four to take over fourth place late in the 22nd lap.

Schatz closed to within 10 car-lengths of Kinser within three laps, and narrowed the gap to five car-lengths by lap 26. The 1997 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year caught Kinser in dense lapped traffic with 1½ laps remaining. Schatz raced wheel-to-wheel with “The King of the Outlaws” through the first three corners during the final lap, but Kinser beat him under the checkered flag for the $10,000 victory.

Tatnell finished in third place, ahead of Meyers, Paulus, Craig Dollansky, Danny Lasoski, Paul McMahan, Daryn Pittman and Steve Kinser’s son, Kraig. Tim Shaffer drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle past eight cars to finish 15th.

Joey Saldana paced the qualifying session with a 104.949-M.P.H. lap around Baytown’s semi-banked, 4/10-mile oval.

Kinser and Lasoski will represent the World of Outlaws in Friday’s International Race of Champions event at Texas Motor Speedway, then compete in the World of Outlaws Sprint Series’ NGK Spark Plugs Shootout Saturday at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track.
