Robbie Pyle Victorious Again at Madison International Speedway
July 25th, 2008
(Oregon, Wisconsin)
Madison International Speedway has been good to Robbie Pyle. The first night
of Border Wars was no exception. After a late race pass on lap 97, Pyle was
able to pass then leader Andrew Morrissey to win the Mayor of Madison 100.
Following Pyle, Steve Carlson was also able to pass during the thrilling
battle on the final laps.
The quickest field of cars in ASALMS history at Madison International
Speedway took the track for ARP Bodies qualifying. During the qualifying
session, 10 cars in total would break Travis Dassow’s ASALMS track record on
the Wisconsin Speedway. Quick qualifier for the event would be Steve Carlson
breaking the previous track record by over 3 tenths of a second. After the
ASALMS invert, Carlson would find himself relegated to starting ninth
placing Travis Dassow on the pole position.
With the potential of inclement weather ahead, ASA Late Model Series
officials hurried prerace activities in an attempt to ensure the night’s
event could be completed. Much to the delight of the fans the area
thunderstorm never reached the track, however there would be plenty of
fireworks ahead during the 100 lap event.
Andrew Morrissey grabbed the lead on lap one, and for most of the race his
car was nearly unbeatable. Determined to make the race official at the
half-way point, the drivers of the ASALMS managed to race under green flag
conditions until lap 58. The machine of Chuck Mactrinder lost traction
bringing out the first of four yellows of the night. Iowa racer Griffin
McGrath was certainly happy to see the caution as he was awarded the free
pass and placed back on the lead lap. Besides a quick yellow on lap 66, the
race would go back to green until the final 10 laps of the evening.
With only 9 laps remaining in the contest, Troy Hintzsche and defending
ASALMS Northern Division Champion Trent Snyder would make contact. As a
result, the 76 of Hintzsche would find himself spun between turns one and
two. After careful consideration, Hintzsche would be awarded his pre-caution
position on the racetrack while Snyder was sent to the tail of the lead lap
for rough driving. The action in the top three heated up as Morrissey, Pyle,
and Carlson ran nose to tail on the restart.
The final restart of the night would come on lap 95, as a quick caution had
temporarily slowed the pace. The top three cars of Morrissey, Pyle and
Carlson would take the green flag in a tightly formed group with 5 laps
remaining in the race. Lap 98 would provide a turning point in the night’s
event. Using a veteran maneuver, Pyle was able to nudge his way inside the
Morrissey machine as the white flag was displayed by chief starter Tom
Powell. As the cars entered turn one for the final time, Pyle and Carlson
were able to clear Morrissey as they headed for the checkered flag. Robbie
Pyle is the winner of the Mayor of Madison 100 at Madison International
Speedway.
“I came here back in 2000 with the old ASA National tour and wrecked half of
the field on the first lap. “, stated a visibly exhausted Pyle in Victory
Lane. “Winning 2 ASALMS races in a row at this track will hopefully make up
for my embarrassing moment in that race”.
Driver Drew Morrissey would experience a range of emotions throughout the
night. After leading 97 of the 100 laps, he would find himself disappointed
in not winning yet satisfied to have a top 3 finish. “Leading was a lot of
fun. When we were out front we could set our own pace and just kind of
ride”, stated Morrissey. “When Robbie got to my back bumper he loosened me
up exiting turn four and that cost us a win. This is good example of good
hard racing”.

About the ASA Late Model Series:
The ASA Late Model Series was formed in 2003 when it was originally known as
the USPRO Cup Series. After combining efforts with the now defunct ASA
National Tour in 2004, Co-Founders / Presidents, Ron and Sandy Varney
reacquired 100% ownership in 2005 after the old ASA ceased operations. The
Varney's retained the name of the ASA Late Model Series.
Over the past five seasons, the ASALMS sanctioning body has developed into
the cornerstone program for Crate Engine / Template Body Late Model racing
throughout North America with a passion for short track racing that has
elevated the program to be tagged as "America's Premier Short Track Series."
The ASALMS will continue to move forward, bringing that passion to fans,
competitors and tracks nationwide as it continues to provide a platform for
exciting and affordable asphalt late model racing, while including a
plethora of racers, from the veteran weekend competitors all the way to the
stars of tomorrow's national series.
About the USPRO Cup Series
The USPRO Cup Series is a cost cutting traveling series under the
sanctioning of the ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts.
Shorter races with a 2-tire rule and shorter travel for the teams will allow
the USPRO Cup Series to give drivers wanting to eventually move up into the
ASALMS, a taste of what a Premiere Traveling Series is like.
Brian Campbell awaits the ASALMS Challenge Division in his backyard;
Berlin Raceway!
By Boyne Machine Racing / M.P.H. Promotions
Wyoming, Michigan
(Thursday, June 12, 2008): Brian Campbell has turned more laps at Berlin
Raceway then most of the entire field combined that are entered in the 2nd
annual Tradition 200!
Excluding his Father, Fred Campbell, (who's also entered), there isn't a
driver entered in the third race of the 2008 racing season in the ASA Late
Model Series Challenge Division that knows the uniquely shaped 7/16s mile
progressively banked paved oval in Marne, Michigan better than the Wyoming,
Michigan driver.
The 29-year-old, who was the 2005 ASALMS Challenge Divisions Pat Bourdow
Memorial Rookie of the Year, hopes his first appearance of 2008 at his home
track will result in a Feature Win as he awaits "America's Premiere Short
Track Series" this Friday and Saturday, June 13-14, 2008 in the running of
the 2nd annual Tradition 200.
Hot off a pair of third place finishes, one in ASALMS Challenge Division
action at Iowa Speedway in the Pride of Iowa 150 back on May 17, 2008 and
again in an ASALMS Northern Division race at Toledo Speedway on June 1, 2008
in the Glass Breaker 125, Campbell comes into the Berlin race Fifth in the
season long ASALMS Challenge Division Points Standings.
"I'm looking forward to coming home we haven't been here all year and we're
excited about the home field fans!" Relayed Campbell as he prepares for a
homecoming at the historic Marne, Michigan speed plant. "We plan on
redeeming ourselves a little bit after last years showing!" He added.
With four laps to go in last years inaugural Tradition 200, Campbell and
fellow Berlin regular, Chris Anthony collided heading into Turn Three
sending Campbell hard into the Turn Three wall and done for the evening!
Anthony was sent to the rear of the field and this set up a Four-Lap Dash
between crafty veterans; Robbie Pyle and Brian's Father, Fred Campbell.
Pyle held off Fred Campbell too win the 1st annual Tradition 200 and the
younger Campbell still cringes at the thought of what might have been in
last years race and the thought of racing his Dad for the win!
"We had a great car last year and were just biding our time getting ready to
go after it there toward the end with Robbie and Dad." Campbell continued.
"Sometimes stuff like that happens though. We're ready this time around and
I expect a much better result this weekend!" He ended.
His Father, the legendary, Fred Campbell is a 10-time Berlin Late Model
Track Champion and a member of the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame. The
Battle Creek, Michigan veteran will make his annual one start a season in
the ASALMS at Berlin this weekend as well!
"Fast Freddy" will carry the familiar #47 on the side of an identically
prepared Boyne Machine ride and will get the opportunity
to race against his son at their home track once again in ASALMS
competition! In addition, Terry VanHaitsma will make his first appearance of
the season in a third Boyne ride sporting the #21.
Finally, a fourth Boyne car is entered for the weekend and will run in the
companion USPRO Cup Series race at Berlin as Ionia, Michigan driver, Nick
Bussell, a contender for the 2008 ASALMS Northern Division Rookie of the
Year title, will make his first USPRO Cup appearance in the Tradition 50.
For the 2008 racing season, Brian Campbell will steer a Boyne Machine
Chevrolet Impala and sometimes a Ford Fusion carrying sponsorship from Boyne
Machine as well as Lane Automotive, Port City Race Cars, Speed Media,
Paragon Lanes, Nylaan Body Shop, Bassett Racing Wheels, A&A Manufacturing,
Eibach Springs, Handy Wacks Racing, Performance Friction Brakes, Penske
Racing Shocks, Flat Foot Racin.com.

Sean Murphy takes his turn at a "Three-Peat"
by winning the Pride of Iowa 150 at Iowa Speedway!
By Matt Prieur-ASA Late Model Series
Newton, Iowa (Saturday, May
17, 2008): ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division Points Leader, Sean
Murphy keeps track of the three other divisions within the ASALMS family of
divisions to see who's doing what and where!
The Fort Lauderdale, Florida driver certainly took notice when 19-year-old
Jimmy Lang won the first three Features in the ASALMS Southern Division and
thought "You know I could do that!"
In a very exciting 150-lap Feature that featured six lead changes at the
immaculate Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa, the 23-year-old originally from
Auckland, New Zealand accomplished that very feat as he steered his ASI
Limited / GunBroker.com Chevrolet into victory lane after his third straight
Feature Win!
An announced crowd of 10,670 patrons, the second highest fan count in the
ASALMS' six-year history watched one of the most thrilling races in the
brief history of the Rusty Wallace Signature Series facility in the running
of the Pride of Iowa 150, which features a unique Triple 50s format!
In winning his third straight Feature, Murphy joins Lang and 2006 ASALMS
Challenge Division Champion and Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year,
Kelly Bires, now a star in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, as the only three
drivers in ASALMS history to win three straight ASALMS Features!
"I can't believe we won this
race!" An excited Murphy said in victory lane as his crew mobbed him as he
climbed out of his machine. "I thought we were done after I tagged the wall
earlier, but Deon (Crew Chief, Deon Deneau) Butch Miller, and all my guys
never gave up on me and we won it!"
"I really wasn't thinking at that point that we would win. But these guys
never gave up and kept getting me back on track." Murphy continued. " Last
year we missed a lot of close races and now this year everything is falling
our way. I've had great race cars prepared for me each race and that's a
huge part of it." The New Zealander remarked.
2008 Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year title contender, Darren
Robertson and Indianapolis, Indiana veteran, Peter Cozzolino led the stout
27-car field to the green flag to begin the unique Triple 50s formatted
Feature.
All 27 ASALMS teams were given a set of Hoosier Racing Tires to use at their
disposal during the event, but it was up to the teams on how and when they
would use their fresh rubber making pit strategy ever so important!
In between each 50-lap segment, the companion United States Super Truck
Series ran 25-lap Features. In the time it took for the trucks to race their
Features, that was the allotted time the ASALMS Teams had to make changes to
their machines!
Cozzolino beat Robertson to the first corner to take the early lead as the
outside line back to the fifth row all made their way by Robertson who had a
slow start. ARP Bodies / Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier and New
Track Record holder, Jacob Goede, who drew the maximum of a 10 for an
inversion, quickly worked his way up to fifth by Lap two!
Cozzolino led with Sean Murphy tucked in behind him in second place. Murphy
immediately began pressing Cozzolino for the top spot and would take the
lead coming out of Turn Two on Lap 13. Goede followed Murphy by Cozzolino
and rested in second place.
The first of eight cautions flew a lap later when Pat Bourdow Memorial
Rookie Points Leader coming into the weekend, Jimmy Weller slammed the Turn
Four wall after colliding with Pete Vanderwyst. Both drivers suffered
extensive damage and were done for the night but physically ok.
On the restart Goede immediately began working on Murphy for the lead when
on Lap 27 Murphy slapped the Turn Two wall immediately began fading with his
passenger side panels flapping in the wind! The Defending race winner, Goede
drove by on Lap 30 to take over the top spot while Murphy began going
backwards in a hurry!
Derek Thorn and several others also quickly passed Murphy. But Murphy was
able to get the caution he needed four laps later which allowed him to pit
to temporarily repair the damage until the end of the first 50-lap segment.
Goede pulled away to a huge lead as the first 50 was coming to a close when
Plano, Texas driver, Brent Seeley, who earlier in the day crashed hard in
Practice, again slammed the wall, this time in Turn One, ending his night
and with the caution laps counting up to 10 laps to go in the event overall,
the field came down pit road after completing the first 50 laps.
Goede led Derek Thorn, Cozzolino, Brent Downey, and a very fast Jimmy Lang,
who started 18th on the grid and made his way up to fifth at the end of the
first segment.
This allowed Murphy, in his ASI Limited Chevrolet to repair the cosmetic
damage to the passenger side of his SS/Green Light Racing machine. He would
start the second segment at the back of the pack. The rest of the teams made
minor changes and no one changed tires!
At the start of the second segment, Goede took off on the start and tried
pulling away from Thorn and the rest of the pack. Thorn had other ideas
however and reeled Goede back in and followed in his tire tracks while Lang
continued his charge to the front and was now in third at this point.
Thorn tried to make the pass for the lead on Lap 71 when 15-year-old Brett
Moffitt and 18-year-old Alec Carll got together heading into Turn Four
resulting in both drivers slamming the wall! Goede led the last completed
lap and was placed in front of the rest of the field.
Goede would lead Thorn, Cozzolino, and the rest of the field into the Lap
100 break where everybody strapped on four fresh tires to begin the third
and final 50-lap segment to conclude the Pride of Iowa 150. Murphy had
climbed back into fourth spot at this point and was poised to make a charge
at the lead once again while Lang had slipped to fifth, but was keeping pace
with the leaders.
On the restart, Cozzolino, who started third in the last segment, quickly
passed Thorn and began to work on Goede for the lead. The Hoosier State
veteran would take the lead away from Goede on Lap 113 and was threatening
to pull away from the rest of the field.
In the meantime, back in the field, Lang the ASALMS Southern Division
point's leader, who had such a great run was forced to pit with fuel pick-up
problems, ending an otherwise excellent run for the Bluffton, South Carolina
driver.
Six laps later, Thorn and Goede were battling for the second spot when Thorn
slipped going into Turn Four and hit the wall before coming to rest in the
infield. He was ok, but very disappointed and done for the evening.
By this time, Murphy had earned the second spot behind Cozzolino while Goede
tried to hang on for third spot but had Brian Campbell and 17-year-old Kyle
Sirizzotti on his back bumper.
Murphy looked high and low trying to figure out a way around Cozzolino when
on Lap 132, Kris Stump blew a right front tire and slammed the Turn One wall
before coming to rest in the middle of Turns 1-2. The Tipp City, Ohio
veteran was ok, but done for the evening.
On what was to be the final restart, Cozzolino and Murphy pulled away to
battle, but Campbell quickly reeled the two leaders back in after passing
Goede with 12 laps to go. Murphy began building momentum around the 7/8s
mile progressively banked paved oval and tried several times to make the
pass stick, but Cozzolino held his line the whole time.
Finally on Lap 145, Murphy made the winning pass by Cozzolino and from
there, the Fort Lauderdale, Florida driver hung on for his third straight
ASALMS Challenge Division Feature Win!
Murphy came into the Pride of Iowa 150 hot off two straight ASALMS Challenge
Division Feature Wins after winning the Non-Points Crate Late Model
Challenge at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, Florida back on January
27, 2008.
He then won again in the first point's race for the ASALMS Challenge
Division on April 26, 2008 at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis in the
O'Reilly Auto Parts / ASI Limited 200 Presented by GunBroker.com. Both ASI
Limited and GunBroker.com are sponsors on Murphy's ride!
"This is just an awesome place to race!" Murphy continued in his post-race
interview in victory lane. "This is a beautiful part of the country, too. We
never see cornfields and combines! Man I love it up here."
"We were good on long runs and I was hoping for a green flag last segment,
but we didn't get it. It took me awhile to come from the back. Peter races
me clean and I appreciate that, we lost so many of these last season, and
now we're starting to get some wins! I can't wait to go to Berlin now!" He
ended.
Cozzolino, in his Fatheadz Sunglasses Ford finished second to Murphy and was
very happy with his finish despite losing the lead with six laps to go. "The
car was so tight so I moved up a lane and a half to get it to turn. I knew
Sean was back there and I tried to hold off for as long as I could."
Cozzolino remarked.
"This was a good run for us! We're starting this season off pretty strong
with some podium finishes." The 38-year-old continued. "Now we're going to a
place where I've won before in the old National Tour. We'll have something
for them there!" He smiled.
Brian Campbell made a run
from 13th to finish in the last podium position in third and echoed the
sentiments of Cozzolino about a tight race car. "I kept telling Bill (Crew
Chief, Bill McGowan) loosen this car up please!" Campbell laughed. "Finally
it started coming in during the last 50 and we made a run at those guys in
front of us, but we'll take a third after crashing at ORP."
"Now these guys come to my home track." Campbell continued, as he referred
to the next ASALMS Challenge Division race on the 2008 schedule at his home
track of Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan. "That's my house and I plan on
making things happen there in front of the home crowd!" The Wyoming,
Michigan driver added!
Goede slipped to fourth place but will maintain his second place in the
point's standings while 17-year-old rookie, Kyle Sirizzotti earned the Pat
Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Race with his career high fifth place showing
and took over the freshman point's lead!
Medina, Ohio veteran, Jack Smith, who changed motors during Qualifying,
started shotgun on the field in 27th and even went two laps down early in
the race, made a strong recovery to earn the night's Performance Concepts
Hard-Charger Award by finishing in sixth!
Joey King, who was making his ASALMS Challenge Division debut, finished
seventh while Pole-Sitter Darren Robertson recovered from his early race
troubles to finish eighth. Griffin McGrath finished a career high ninth
while Eddie Hoffman completed the Top 10.
The ASALMS Challenge Division will take three weeks off before returning to
action with the third race of the season in the ASALMS Home State of
Michigan as the historic Berlin Raceway, located West of Grand Rapids in
Marne, Michigan on Friday and Saturday, June 13-14, 2008 for the 2nd annual
Tradition 200. The USPRO Cup Series Presented by Drive Train Specialists
will also be in action.
The ASALMS sincerely apologize for the internal problems with the ASALMS
Challenge Division website throughout the weekend. We hope to have those
problems corrected as soon as possible!
