Meyers Widens Points Lead by Picking Up Fifth Win of 2011 Season
2010 Champion gets third top-5 in a row, Schatz finishes 2nd with Swindell 3rd

By Kyle Luetters

SARVER, Pa. — Sept. 24, 2011 — The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series season is entering its stretch run, and Jason Meyers knows the pressure is on if he's going to repeat as champion. On Saturday night in the Commonwealth Clash at Lernerville Speedway, Meyers and his Elite Racing team rose to the occasion and captured their fifth victory of the year and extended their lead in the standings at the same time.

"Wins have been so hard to come by this year," said Meyers, of Clovis, Calif. "We had a great car all night and then when we got to lap traffic, you never knew where they were going to go. Some went high, some went low. You had to be very patient tonight when it came to getting through all of it. Our car seemed to work really well around the top. I need to thank Brian (Bloomfield) for pointing that out to me during the last yellow flag. Just was another great run for our entire DDNi/Media-Tile/GLR Investments/All-Star Performance team and we’ll use this to go into Williams Grove (Speedway) this weekend."

Youngster Sam Hafertepe Jr. set Quick Time and started the 35-lap feature on the pole with Sammy Swindell on his outside. Hafertepe Jr. led early until mechanical woes forced the racer from Sunnyvale, Texas, to pull his #15H machine into the pit area and finished 22nd. Meyers inherited the lead and had to fend off four-time series champion Donny Schatz for the remainder of the race.

"We had a really good car tonight," said Schatz, driver of the Tony Stewart Racing #15 STP/Armor All/Chevrolet. "My guys really put their MAC tools to work tonight. The top side was working for us pretty good there for awhile. We were able to catch people in lap traffic so those late race restarts hurt us a bit."

Sammy Swindell dueled with Jason Sides on the last restart of the race, but he eventually pulled away to earn the final podium spot.

"Our Big Game Treestands car was pretty good tonight,” said Swindell. “We ran pretty well earlier on."

Sides would settle for the fourth position as Kraig Kinser made his way up to the 5thspot for his fifth top-5 of the season. Jac Haudenschild charged from 22ndstarting position to finish 6thto earn the KSE Hard Charger Award. Joey Saldana, who was looking for his third straight win, suffered engine trouble early on and finished 23rd.

The World of Outlaws will go head-to-head with their heated rivals, the Pennsylvania Posse, next weekend at Williams Grove Speedway. The annual National Open weekend at the famed half-mile oval in Mechanicsburg, Pa., is Friday, Sept. 30, and Sat., October 1.

BRANDON, S.D. — Aug. 20, 2011 — After a lackluster showing at the 51stGoodyear Knoxville Nationals, Steve Kinser and his #11 Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/ Chevrolet crew have found their groove again as the “King of the Outlaws” picked up his seventh win of the season and second win in a row. The Bloomington, Ind. native led the final 14 laps to claim the checkers at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.D.

“It’s a great feeling to be back in victory lane for the second night in a row,” said a grinning Kinser. “The track started to rubber up a bit and we found something there about halfway through. It hooked up car really well and allowed us to get by the 14 and the 9. The whole crew really worked hard to get us back to where we were earlier this year and I think we are getting there. We certainly had a lot more speed the past two nights than we have had in the last month.”

Kinser started the night’s feature event in the 8thposition as Kerry Madsen led the field to green with youngster Brad Sweet to his outside. Once the green flag flew, Sweet powered the #9 Red Bull Maxim to the lead and held on thru the first 21 circuits. Sweet had to hold off numerous challenges from second place finisher Jason Meyers. The Clovis, Calif. native was battling hard with Sweet when Kinser snuck by.

“Another great run for us tonight in this All-Star Performance/DDNi/Media-Tile car,” Meyers said. ”Brad and I got to battling there pretty good and the track started laying rubber down. There’s not much left here on this right rear but we made it. Like I said, just another great night for us.”

While he didn’t get the win, Meyers was able to extend his points lead over Donny Schatz who finished 22ndafter an early race caution. Kinser and Schatz are now tied for second in the standings, both 89 markers back. Sweet wound up finishing third but was upbeat after leading early.

“We had an awesome car tonight for sure,” Sweet said. “We had some pretty good battles going there with Steve and Jason. We’ll eventually learn how to win one of these things. It’d be some great medicine for Joey back home to see the #9 car back in Victory Lane.”

Terry McCarl was able to wheel his #55 machine to a fourth place finish with Sam Hafertepe Jr. rounding out the top-5. Pole sitter Madsen ran into some late race troubles and finished 15th. Early front runner Lucas Wolfe also had issues yet managed a tenth place finish.

The ‘Great Northern Tour’ continues for the Outlaws as the series heads to Black Hills Speedway on Tuesday, Aug. 23 and then it’s onto Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on Aug. 26-27.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Aug. 19, 2011 —Tony Stewart Racing teammates Steve Kinser and Donny Schatz waged an epic back and forth battle for the checkers at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D. Neither driver was able to gain a clear advantage on the other and the 40 lap main event came down to the final turn. With Schatz riding high, Kinser dove to the bottom in turn four and powered past to claim victory by little over a tenth of a second.

“That was a race,” said Kinser as he gained his breath back in Victory Lane. “Donny Schatz is one the greatest sprint car driver out here right now and to battle him tonight was awesome. I leaned on him a few times there and I shouldn’t have but I wanted this one really bad. We didn’t run nearly as well at (Knoxville) Nationals as we wanted to so we all went back to the shop and put our heads together. We came out tonight and got our second quick time of the season and the win so I think we found something.”

(Click here to watch a video with Kinser after his victory at River Cities Speedway.)

The third trip of the season to the three-tenths mile oval produced the type of excitement that fans have come to expect from the speedway in Grand Forks, N.D. Hometown hero Mark Dobmeier led from the get go and was up front for four circuits until Kinser muscled his Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet by on lap five. Kinser seemed to be on cruise control until Schatz and his STP/Armor All/Chevrolet J&J caught the 20 time champion and proceeded to take control. From lap 18 on, it was a battle between two of the most accomplished drivers in sprint car racing.

“I just had Sprint Car 101 from Steve Kinser tonight,” Schatz said with a chuckle in Victory Lane. ”I don’t think I’ve ever had that much fun in a sprint car. It’s cool to race your teammate like that and go for the win.”

Perhaps the person with the best view in the house was third place finisher Jason Meyers.

“You know, I never wish anyone would wreck but I was kind of hoping that they would cancel each other out,” Meyers said with a laugh in Victory Lane. “All jokes aside, that was a great race between those guys. The All-Star Performance team is just happy to come out of here with three finishes in 2011. Seemed like we were always wrecking here the two or three years before that. Great show tonight for the fans. They always pack the place up here and we can’t wait to come back next year.”

Hard charging Sammy Swindell finished fourth with Dobmeier holding onto the fifth position.

With River Cities Speedway in the rearview mirror, the ‘Great Northern Tour’ continues on as the Saturday, Aug. 20 at Huset’s Speedway; Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Black Hills Speedway; and Aug. 26-27 at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta.

DONNY KNOXVILLE: Schatz Claims Fifth Goodyear Knoxville Nationals Crown in Six Years
Gutsy early move to charge past Swindell and Sweet leads to $150,000 payday

By Kyle Luetters

KNOXVILLE, Iowa — Aug. 13, 2011 — Donny Schatz wasted little time finding his way to the front of the 51stGoodyear Knoxville Nationals on Saturday night at historic Knoxville Raceway. Normally a driver who excels in the latter stages of a race, the four-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion quickly charged from 13thto fifth, then set his sights on the lead of the $150,000-to-win, 50-lap main event.

Schatz struggled through his qualifying night on Wednesday when motor issues forced his car into the pits, but he was saved by strong time trial and heat race performances that blunted the effects of his rough time in the A-main.

“I was sweating bullets when I thought were going to have to come through the Last Chance Showdown after we finished 24thin that main (qualifying night),” said Schatz, of Fargo, N.D., who drives the Tony Stewart Racing STP/Armor All/Chevrolet. “Thankfully we had enough points to qualify to start 13th in Saturday’s show. My car was awesome all night long. The motor, the chassis, everything was great. The bottom was a place where my car was able to work really well early on and as the race progressed, I kind of wore out that line so I had to move up a bit. I’m very lucky to be with great people and I need to thank the over 1,100 people the signed up for our sign and ride program. It was really cool to get all of those people into victory lane tonight.”

Once the green flag flew, Schatz quickly mounted a charge to the front. Lap by lap, Schatz picked off car after car until a restart on lap 14 gave him the opportunity to make his move for the lead. Riding the low side, Schatz made it a three-wide coming down the front stretch underneath front row starters Sammy Swindell and Brad Sweet. From that point, Schatz held off hard-charging Oklahomans Daryn Pittman and Shane Stewart, who wound up second in his third consecutive event during the Goodyear Knoxville Nationals after being the runner-up in Friday’s Q20 Race of Champions and the Premier Chevy Dealers World Challenge.

“This guy over here started two rows in front of me and in a few laps, I couldn’t see him it all,” Stewart said as he motioned towards Schatz at the post-race press conference. “I looked up at the scoreboard during our first caution and noticed he was already in the top three. I feel really proud of our work. My team did a great job and we passed a lot of cars.”

Swindell earned the pole through a strong run on his qualifying day, but settled for third in the A-main.

“We just weren’t fast enough,” said Swindell, of Germantown, Tenn., who won the event in 1983. “During the red, we didn’t change much, just put two new rear tires on and I got a bad restart when we came off of that red. I was racing really hard towards the end to make up that ground I had lost but I just didn’t have enough.”

Defending Goodyear Knoxville Nationals Champion Tim Shaffer put on another excellent display of driving talent as he charged from the 19th starting position to finish fourth with Pittman finishing in fifth. Outside pole-sitter Sweet was 8thafter qualifying for his first Goodyear Knoxville Nationals A-main and led four laps early on. Current World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series points leader Jason Meyers experienced mechanical woes after changing gears during the event’s pit stop and finished 22nd.

With the rigs and teams pulling out of the famed half mile oval, they now set their sights on the ‘Great Northern Tour’ that will see the Outlaws race Friday, Aug. 19, at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D.; Saturday, Aug. 20 at Husets Speedway; Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Black Hills Speedway; and Aug. 26-27 at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta.

Lucas Wolfe, Tim Shaffer, Kevin Swindell Take Center Stage in Final Tune-Up for 51st Goodyear Knoxville Nationals
Sammy Swindell, Brad Sweet comprise front row for $150,000-to-win A-main

By Kyle Luetters

KNOXVILLE, Iowa. — Aug. 12, 2011 — Lucas Wolfe is still chasing the first points-paying victory in his World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series career, but on Friday night at Knoxville Raceway he dominated the best drivers in the world by winning the Premier Chevy Dealers Knoxville World Challenge, the third of three feature events during the night before the focus quickly turns to Saturday’s 51stGoodyear Knoxville Nationals $150,000-to-win A-main.

Wolfe, a Mechanicsburg, Pa. native, has been heating up on the World of Outlaws circuit lately, but a victory at Knoxville during the biggest week in Sprint Car racing certainly brought a smile to the series top rookie in 2008.

“This was the most money I’ve ever won in one event,” said Wolfe, who pocketed $10,000 for the win.

Wolfe wasn’t the only winner on the night. Defending Knoxville Nationals champion Tim Shaffer claimed the inaugural Q20 Race of Champions, the second feature Friday night, while Kevin Swindell kicked the night off by capturing the A-main for drivers outside the Top 50 in qualifying points earned during Wednesday’s and Thursday’s programs.

One of the most impressive performances of the night belonged to Shane Stewart, who finished second in the World Challenge and the Race of Champions.

The stage is now set for the glitz, glamour and grandeur of the 51stGoodyear Knoxville Nationals on Saturday night. Sammy Swindell will be on the pole while Brad Sweet, filling in for injured Joey Saldana at Kasey Kahne Racing, will start on the outside of the front row.

Among the drivers already locked into the 50-lap A-main are defending World of Outlaws champion Jason Meyers (starting fourth), 12-time Goodyear Knoxville Nationals champion Steve Kinser (starting eighth), four-time Knoxville and World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz (starting 13th), leading World of Outlaws qualifier Paul McMahan (starting 16th) and the World of Outlaws driver with the most wins this season, Craig Dollansky (starting 18th).

“You get an extra set of butterflies in your stomach as you go four wide here,” said Donny Schatz, who won the Goodyear Knoxville Nationals every year from 2006 through 2009. “You can hear the roar of the crowd over your own engine. It’s a feeling that is so indescribable that you have to be here to experience it for yourself.”

Schatz’s Knoxville streak is impressive, but Steve Kinser’s 12 titles are still the benchmark when it comes to most prestigious Sprint Car event in the world.

“It’s our biggest race and the biggest pay day,” said Kinser, the 20-time World of Outlaws champion from Bloomington, Ind. “Donny talked about going four wide to salute the fans here. I think it’s on par with the parade lap before the Indianapolis 500.”

Kinser and Schatz raced their way in on the first of two qualifying nights that saw Sammy Swindell take the checkers after a spirited battle with Davey Heskin. On the second qualifying night, it was Mark Dobmeier who was the last man standing when the dust settled, having passed Jason Meyers with 11 laps to go.

Dobmeier Captures Goodyear Knoxville Nationals Qualifying Victory
North Dakota racer edges Meyers for win; Sammy Swindell tops overall points

By Kyle Luetters

KNOXVILLE, Iowa. — Aug. 11, 2011 — Mark Dobmeier knew he let one World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series victory slip away earlier this year at Princeton (Minn.) Speedway and he wasn’t about to let Thursday night’s Goodyear Knoxville Nationals qualifying event get away from him, too.

Dobmeier charged past World of Outlaws champion Jason Meyers on Lap 14 and held him off for the victory, putting himself solidly into the field when the green flag falls on Saturday night’s $150,000 to win main event.

“Wow, I can’t believe we’ve gotten here,” said Dobmeier, of Grand Forks, N.D. “We feel like we’ve gotten this place figured out here in recent weeks and this positioned us well for Saturday night. I let one win get away from me by picking the wrong line at Princeton. We’re pumped about this and the car worked really well al night long.”

Meyers led for the majority of the 25-lap event, the second of two qualifying nights for the 51strunning of the Knoxville Nationals, but Dobmeier was able to get past Meyers on the outside with 11 laps to go. Meyers held on for second in his specially designed AllStar Performance KPC with local favorite Brian Brown finishing third.

“I lost track of Mark a little bit towards the end of the race,” said Meyers, of Clovis, Calif., who spent Wednesday night and part of Thursday at a local hospital receiving intravenous fluids to combat the flu. “I knew he was coming and had a fast race car. This entire crew gave me another great car.”

Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contender Cody Darrah was the night’s fastest qualifier, but he wasn’t able to transfer out of the Last Chance Showdown on a night when 54 cars were signed in to race. Williams Grove track champion Lance Dewease finished fourth in the A-main with Jason Johnson, of Eunice, La., rounding out the Top 5.

Overall through two qualifying nights at Knoxville, Sammy Swindell is atop the points chart with Brad Sweet, Dale Blaney, Meyers and Daryn Pittman rounding out the Top 5 in points. Steve Kinser is eighth while Donny Schatz is 13thand defending champion Tim Shaffer is 19th.

Swindell Takes Opening Night Victory at Goodyear Knoxville Nationals
1983 Nationals champ tops points chart after late-race pass of runner-up Heskin

By Kyle Luetters

KNOXVILLE, Iowa. — Aug. 10, 2011 — Sammy Swindell used a bit of patience and the high groove at Knoxville Raceway on Wednesday night to blast past Davey Heskin and claim the opening night feature event at the 51stGoodyear Knoxville Nationals.

Heskin led from the initial green flag and fought off challenges from pole-sitter Joey Moughan and Kasey Kahne Racing’s Brad Sweet. However, with five laps to go, Swindell worked his way to the front and held on through a late race caution to wind up in victory lane on the first of four nights of racing that culminates with the $150,000-to-win finale on Saturday.

“We got another win in the qualifying night which sets us up pretty good for the feature on Saturday night,” said Swindell, of Germantown, Tenn. “The car worked well all over the racetrack but was pretty good up high. We’ve got a brand new car here and Alan Parker built us a brand new motor so we’re pretty excited. We just need to hold on and get through Saturday night and hopefully we’ll be back up here when it’s all said and done.”

The first of two qualifying nights featured some big stars as Swindell, last year’s Knoxville Nationals champion Tim Shaffer, 20-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser, four-time World of Outlaws champion Donny Schatz and 41 other racers tackled the famed half-mile track. Sweet, of Grass Valley, Calif., kicked off the night by setting quick time, which is critical with the Knoxville Nationals format that awards points Saturday’s starting position every time a driver is on the track.

The A-main capped off an exciting night and featured plenty of drama as Shaffer and Schatz both experienced engine woes.

Schatz, who also is a four-time Goodyear Knoxville Nationals champion, wasn’t the only World of Outlaws regular to experience trouble. Jason Sides never quite got the setup on his machine right and Bill Rose also struggled. Lucas Wolfe and Chad Kemenah both were moving up in their respective heats until accidents took both drivers which caused them to miss the night’s B-main.

The Outlaws are back in action tomorrow night for the second qualifying night of the 51stGoodyear Knoxville Nationals before the Granddaddy of them all on Saturday night, the $150,000 to win main event.

By Chris Dolack

ROSSBURG, Ohio - July 17, 2011 - World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship contender Joey Saldana had surgery on Sunday in Indianapolis to his right forearm, which was broken in a multi-car crash early in the Kings Royal A-main Saturday night at Eldora Speedway.

Doctors inserted two plates and 25 screws to stabilize his arm. Saldana's ribs were also injured in the incident, which contributed to a partially collapsed lung. He is expected to remain hospitalized until midweek.

Saldana counts two Kings Royal victories among his nine World of Outlaws wins at Eldora. After sustaining a concussion in a crash last September at Eldora, Saldana won in May at the famed Tony Stewart-owned speedway in rural western Ohio. Saldana has been at or near the top of the championship standings all season as he tries to win his first World of Outlaws championship as well as the first championship his Kasey Kahne Racing team.

For further pertinent updates on Saldana as the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series readies for Tuesday's Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup at Lernerville Speedway, click WorldofOutlaws.com or follow @worldofoutlaws on Twitter by clicking http://www.twitter.com/worldofoutlaws

World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series at a Glance:
Brad Doty Classic at Limaland Motorsports Park and Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway

Jason Meyers

CONCORD, N.C. — July 11, 2011 —Jason Meyers and Joey Saldana emerged victorious as the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series spent the weekend in Wisconsin. Cedar Lake Speedway proved to be the perfect night for Meyers, the 2010 Series Champion, to flex some muscle as he led all thirty-five laps of the night’s feature event.

Saldana set the tour on fire earlier in the year but cooled as the month of June kicked off. A trip to victory lane for the second year in a row could be the catalyst the #9 Kasey Kahne Racing team needed to get their season back on track.

As the Outlaws gear up for the legendary “Month of Money,” the series points standings is closer than ever with the top six running within 85 points of each other.

This week, the Outlaws are in Ohio as the 23rdAnnual Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic presented by Racing Optics on Wednesday, July 13 and then it’s on Eldora Speedway for the famed Kings Royal weekend.

Sides Conquers Second Night of Boot Hill Showdown in Kansas

DODGE CITY, Kan. — July 2, 2011 — Jason Sides knew he wasn’t going to get very many shots to pass a strong race leader in 2010 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Champion Jason Meyers. The Clovis, Calif. native had been stout all weekend and started the second night of the two day show on the pole and led early on. However, lap traffic proved to be the window of opportunity that outside pole sitter Sides needed.

“Lap traffic played a big role in tonight’s race,” said an exhausted yet excited Sides, who led the final 17 laps of the 30 lap event. “Jason (Meyers) got in there a little bit hot and slid up the track a bit and that opened the bottom up for me. There was quite a bit of wet stuff low so that was the best place for our car. When I saw that open up, I knew I had to take it.”

Meyers wound up second after fending off a hard charging Sammy Swindell for third and there was quite a bit of disappointment in the former champion’s voice during post race interviews.

“This one is on me tonight,” said Meyers. “My crew has been working so hard and it just seems like this is how our year has gone the whole way. We’ve been close quite a bit. But I take the blame for this one. I was really wanting to get these guys into victory lane tonight.”

Swindell rounded out the podium finishers after setting Quick Time on the night with a 13.570 lap around the three eighths mile oval. Swindell battled his Big Game Tree Stands teammate, Craig Dollansky throughout the main event for the third spot.

“Craig and I had a good battle going there,” said Swindell, who has four victories on the season. “It was a lot of back and forth which was good and I was able to find the line that worked really well for my car and that was the best I could do.”

Dollansky, the previous night’s winner, settled for fourth with Ben Gregg slotting in the fifth position. Series points leader Donny Schatz finished 8 thand retook the series points lead by seven over Joey Saldana, who finished 13th

The Outlaws are back in action again at Cedar Lake Speedway on Friday, July 8 and Beaver Dam Raceway on Saturday, July 9.

Dollansky Dives to Score Fifth Win of 2011 Campaign at Dodge City
Points Leader Schatz has engine woes, Saldana retakes lead in standings

By Kyle Luetters

DODGE CITY, Kan. — July 1, 2011 — Dry and hot conditions have forced city and local officials to ban fireworks in Southwest Kansas. However, the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series staged a show that would put even the biggest and brightest fireworks to shame. Elk River, Minn native Craig Dollansky charged through the field and used a late race restart to grab his fifth win of the season and first victory at Dodge City Raceway Park.

“Tonight certainly was a work in progress as we had to keep adjusting throughout the heats and the dash,” said Dollansky in victory lane. “It always is a total team effort and to get that last restart was pretty cool. I wasn’t quite sure what was going to happen on it. I got a good run off of Sammy (Swindell) coming off of turn 2 and got under him and made it work.”

Swindell, who led 26 laps of the 30 lap main event, settled for second place after starting on the outside pole.

“We really didn’t want to see that caution with three (laps) to go,” said Swindell, a native of Germantown, Tenn. “Craig pulled of a pretty good move and I wasn’t able to get back past him. It’s a good night for Big Game Treestands.”

2010 Series Champion Jason Meyers finished in third. Meyers, a Clovis, Calif. native, sat on the pole for the night’s main event and had high hopes going into the 30 lap affair.

“We felt like we were really close tonight to getting our first win of the season,” said Meyers. “We maybe just missed something for the feature. However, we can take tonight and add it to our notes and go on from there.”

The nights fastest qualifier, Jason Sides, was fourth with five time Dodge City race winner Joey Saldana coming home in fifth. Fargo, N.D. native Donny Schatz was running fourth in the main event until problems with the engine on his sprinter regulated him to a 20thplace finish.

The Outlaws are back in action again at Dodge City Raceway Park as they close out the Boothill Showdown on

Dollansky Sweeps World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Duel in the Dakotas with Exciting Final Turn Pass at River Cities Speedway
‘The Greatest Show on Dirt’ next heads to Princeton and Huset’s speedways

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - June 18, 2011 - Craig Dollansky completed a sweep of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Duel in the Dakotas in thrilling fashion on Saturday night at River Cities Speedway when he swept past Jason Sides on the high side in the final corner and charged to the checkered flag.

It was a reversal of fortune for Dollansky, who earlier this season lost a race to Sides on the final turn. This time Dollansky, of Elk River, Minn., was the hunter, and earned not only a sweep of the weekend event in Grand Forks, N.D., but also picked up his fourth overall victory of the season.

"I may be from Minnesota but I love North Dakota, I will tell you that," said a beaming Dollansky. "We were good around the top for most of the night. I also want to give a special shout out to all the fathers out there. This is just really cool."

Dollansky sported a different primary paint scheme as brilliant shades of blue from Aggressive Hydraulics adorned his #7 Big Game Treestands Maxim during the two-day event. The combination seemed to work all weekend as Dollansky and the rest of the pack survived a wild night. Sides led from the start of the race in the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim and held off hard challenges from Dollansky, Joey Saldana and Steve Kinser. Sides led the first 17 laps before Saldana went to the point on Lap 18. Sides then recaptured the lead a lap later and held it until the final circuit.

"We got passed," said a dejected Sides, of Bartlett, Tenn. "It was a matter of yards to the finish and we just got caught in lapped traffic. Dollansky was better on the top and he got around me."

Kinser managed to finish in the third position after a wild night for his #11 Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet Maxim. The 20-time champion had his hands full, especially on six restarts.

"One of the restarts we gave everything away and then on the next one, we gained it all back," said Kinser, a five-time winner this season from Bloomington, Ind. "Our car hooked up pretty good in some places and we were able to use that to our advantage."

After seriously challenging Sides for the lead with 10 laps to go, Saldana scraped the wall coming off of turn four and faded to the fourth position. Defending series champion Jason Meyers battled his way into the Top 5 as the checkers flew to maintain a solid string of finishes. Current points leader and North Dakota native Donny Schatz looked strong early in the event, setting quick time during qualifying, but settled for a seventh-place finish to go with his runner-up finish on Friday night.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series remains in the upper Midwest this week as it invades Princeton (Minn.) Speedway on Saturday, June 25, and Huset's Speedway in Brandon, S.D., just outside of Sioux Falls on Sunday, June 26.

RIVER CITIES SPEEDWAY NOTEBOOK

Dollansky Surges to World of Outlaws Win at River Cities Speedway
Schatz edges Rose for second in ‘Duel in the Dakotas’ opener, widens points lead

By Kyle Luetters

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — June 17, 2011 — Craig Dollansky tracked down Bill Rose midway through the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Duel in the Dakotas opener on Friday night at River Cities Speedway and charged through traffic, got a strong jump on a late restart then powered to victory for the third time this season.

Dollansky, of Elk River, Minn., chased pole-sitter Rose from the drop of the green flag, eventually catching and passing him on Lap 19 at the 3/10-mile bullring. Rose, trying to earn the first World of Outlaws win of his career, raced with Dollansky through traffic, looking for any kind of opening to pull off a huge upset. Rose’s final shot at Dollansky came on a double-file restart with five laps left in the 40-lap main event, but Dollansky proved to be too strong in his specially outfitted Aggressive Hydraulics/Big Game Treestands Maxim.

Dollansky chose the bottom groove, with Rose lined up to the outside and current points leader Donny Schatz right behind Dollansky on the inside of the second row. As Dollansky sped away, Rose tried to fight off Schatz’s STP/Armor All/Cheverolet J&J, but Schatz was able to move into the runner-up position with one to go. Rose wound up holding onto a career-best third in the KJM Trucking Maxim with Steve Kinser in the Tony Stewart Racing Bass Pro Shops/J.D. Byrider/Chevrolet Maxim and Joey Saldana in the Kasey Kahne Racing Red Bull Maxim rounding out the Top Five.

“What a team effort tonight by DJ (Lindsey), Troy (Dollansky) and Luke (Dollansky) tonight,” said a smiling Dollansky in victory lane. “They put such a car under me tonight that it was unreal. It truly was fun to wheel this Aggressive Hydraulics-backed car and pick up a win for them as they are our primary sponsor this weekend. The track was also great too. Tons of grip and I could run anywhere.”

Dollansky was near the front all night long but had to contend with Rose and four-time series champion and North Dakota native Schatz. After getting passed for the lead, Rose did his best to fend off Schatz as the laps wound down before Schatz pulled in front of Rose coming off Turn 4 with the checkers in sight.

“I wish I could be happy to tell you that we are excited because of a second place finish but we’re not,” said Schatz, who with 106 victories in his career remains one win away from tying his childhood hero Doug Wolfgang. “We’ve been consistent all year but we want to win races. You want to see those trophies add up. It’s going to take about 15 of them to win this championship.”

Despite being third across the finish line, Rose received a standing ovation from the huge crowd when he emerged from his car for post-race festivities.

“Just to be standing amongst these guys is cool, I don’t care what anyone says,” said Rose, an owner and driver who raced a chassis built in 2006. “We were pretty good on both the top and low line and the car ran really fast all night long. Lapped traffic held me up a bit and Craig really found something coming off the corners and that allowed him to get by. We’re getting closer though.”

Defending series champion Jason Meyers was the night’s fastest qualifier and finished sixth, maintaining his third-place position in the championship standings.

The Outlaws are back in action Saturday night to wrap up the Duel in the Dakotas at River Cities Speedway before invading Princeton (Minn.) Speedway next Saturday (June 25) and Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.D., next Sunday (June 26).

McMahan Scores First Victory of 2011 at the Dirt Track at Charlotte
Kinser uses runner up finish to take series points lead from Saldana

By Kyle Luetters

CONCORD, N.C. — May 28, 2011 — Paul McMahan had no idea what his 2011 racing plans were when he took off for a vacation in Cancun, Mexico last fall. McMahan spent 2010 subbing for the injured Cody Darrah in the #91 Great Clips Maxim for NASCAR star Kasey Kahne. The Elk Grove, Calif. native picked up a victory at the famed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio en route to an 8thplace finish in the final standings. Even with his solid season, McMahan was still unsure of what the future held.

“I called Kasey and asked him what the plan was for 2011 and he told me to give him a few weeks,” said a smiling and relieved McMahan. “Dennis (Roth) called me when I was down in Cancun and told me to call Kasey. When I did, he told me that he had found a ride for me. Kasey had put it all together himself and I was extremely happy that I was going to be driving for him for another season.”

With Kahne looking on, McMahan wheeled his #83 HR Cattle Maxim into victory lane in the Circle K NOS Energy Drink Outlaw Showdown at the Dirt Track at Charlotte. Heavy rains had delayed the event 24 hours but as the ‘Greatest Show on Dirt,’ took to the speedway, McMahan was at the top nearly all night long. McMahan set quick time for the fifth time on the season and kept his nose clean throughout his heat and the dash. Germantown, Tenn. native Sammy Swindell started the A-main on the pole and led the first 14 laps until a restart bunched up the field and gave McMahan his shot. The two drivers raced feverishly and at one point made contact down the front stretch as the green flag flew.

“Sammy slid up into me a little bit and tried to block me but I was going to hold my ground,” said McMahan. “I wasn’t going to give an inch.”

While Kasey Kahne Racing got to victory lane with McMahan, two of the four KKR machines entered in to the nights events experienced trouble. Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate Cody Darrah experienced motor issues and the #49 of Brad Sweet experienced an overheating motor after losing a left rear tire.

“We had an up and down night with the Great Clips Maxim,” said Darrah, a native of Red Lion, Penn. “We learned quite a bit that we can use for later on but unfortunately we lost a motor and that ended our night early. We’re disappointed. We won a heat race and had high hopes.”

Swindell was running second to McMahan until a flat left rear tire sent him into the pit area. When the Big Game Treestands crew arrived to change the tire, they discovered the front brake lines were broken which left Swindell with no brakes, effectively ending his night.

The Tony Stewart Racing tandem of Steve Kinser and Donny Schatz came home second and third respectively. According to Schatz, the race track lent itself to some great racing and tested the drivers stamina.

“We raced pretty hard tonight, there’s no doubt about that,” said the four time champion from Fargo, N.D. “The track widened out really well and we were just flat out the entire time. It was an extremely fast race track tonight and very demanding on us as drivers.”

2010 Champion Jason Meyers came home fourth with Mechanicsburg Penn. native Lucas Wolfe rounding out the top-5. NASCAR star Tony Stewart made it around Joey Saldana to finish 10thon the night. With his 11thplace run, Saldana relinquished the points lead to Kinser and now trails the 20-time champion by 9 points.

The Outlaws now head back to I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich., on Monday, May 30, to make up the “Rumble in Michigan,” which was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 21.

Schatz Attacks Attica for First World of Outlaws Victory of 2011
Four-time champ holds off Dollansky while Shaffer charges from 23rd to 3rd

ATTICA, Ohio. — May 20, 2011 — After several close calls and some early season frustrations, Donny Schatz finally broke through on Friday night at Attica Raceway Park for his first World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series victory of the season.

It was the 106thtriumph of his career, and the perfect way to wrap up his car owner Tony Stewart’s birthday. It also moves the four-time champion to within victory one of tying his childhood idol, Doug Wolfgang, on the Outlaws all-time career win list.

Schatz was strong all night in his STP/Armor All/Chevrolet J&J, running third in the dash to secure the inside of Row 2 on the starting grid for the 40-lap A-main. He quickly slid past pole-sitter Phil Gressman and fought off Craig Dollansky’s charge for victory.

“Ideally, I would have liked to started about fifth or sixth,” said Schatz, of Fargo, N.D., who also won in 2008 at Attica. “However, once the race got going, I was able to find a good line around the bottom of (turns) one and two and the outside in three and four. Towards the end of the race, I started over driving it a bit and slid up into the middle and found out I could still get some grip. We had a car that could run all over and that is a testament to Ricky Warner and this whole team. We were great all night.”

Schatz was cruising until the first caution flew with 23 laps complete. That was the first of four caution periods – including a red flag for Jac Haudenschild’s flip with nine to go - that forced Schatz to decide which lane was best on double-file restarts. Dollansky tried a slide job on the closing laps in the Big Game Treestands Maxim, but then had a battle on his hands with 2010 Knoxville Nationals champion Tim Shaffer, who had charged from 23rdto finish third.

“I felt like we had a good shot at getting around (Schatz) had we stayed green,” said Dollansky, a native of Elk River, Minn., who has led a series-high 93 laps this season. “That red flag coming out killed us a bit because we did have a better car on the longer runs. I tried to dive in there deep and hoped it would get enough bite to get around Schatz but it just didn’t hold. We were good all night on the top and if we were going to get him, it was probably going to have to be there.”

Shaffer tried to dive below Dollansky for the second spot on the last lap but came up just short and settled for the third position.

“We had a very decent run tonight and the top was really working for us,” said Shaffer, of Aliquippa, Pa., who was the KSE Hard Charger after passing 20 cars. “We managed to keep our nose clean and run strong. We gained quite a bit of knowledge tonight.”

Following his flip in Turn 2 that brought out a red flag with 31 laps complete, Ohio fan favorite Haudenschild emerged from the wreckage unharmed and waved to the fans, receiving a thunderous response.

Sam Hafertepe Jr. had another strong outing with the World of Outlaws to finish fourth, while defending series champion Jason Meyers was fifth and enters Saturday’s event at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich., aiming to win at that track for the third year in a row.

Series points leader Joey Saldana never quite found his groove, finishing 11thafter starting 18th. Steve Kinser continues chasing Saldana in the overall standings, using his sixth-place finish Friday night to cut Saldana’s lead to 27 points. Only 97 points separates Saldana in first to Jason Sides in fifth.

The Outlaws invade I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich., on Saturday night (May 21) before heading southeast on Friday, May 27, to compete during Speed Weeks at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.

Can Kinser and Schatz Repeat at 40th DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH?
Tony Stewart Racing teammates are defending World of Outlaws winners at Volusia

CONCORD, N.C. - Feb. 5, 2011 - Tony Stewart. Steve Kinser. Donny Schatz. A year ago at the DIRTcar Nationals by University of Northwestern Ohio those three superstars came together to form a World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series powerhouse. Stewart put together a team with 24 series championships combined. Fans were somewhat awestruck by the pairing fierce competitors Schatz and Kinser under Stewart's ownership. Many figured the championship battle would come down to the two TSR stars.

It was tough to argue, too, when they showed off their domination beginning with the initial green flag at Volusia Speedway Park. Schatz captured opening night and Kinser followed up with a victory one night later. Of course, the season played out and while Schatz and Kinser were in the title hunt all year, Kasey Kahne Racing's Joey Saldana and Jason Meyers didn't back down, with Meyers becoming the first Californian to win a World of Outlaws championship.

Now, a year later entering the 40th Annual DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH beginning Tuesday, Feb. 8, the expectations remain sky high for the TSR team. Schatz surged down the stretch last fall but came up just short as Meyers dominated the World Finals at Charlotte. Another successful off-season of racing in Australia will give Schatz the momentum he counts on for a fast start. As for Kinser, last year marked the first time since 2005 he was back atop the championship hunt during the heat of the season. Entering this year's opener at Volusia, there's little doubt everybody will be wondering if Schatz can win a fifth title or if Kinser can capture his 21st crown.

"It wasn't a bad first season at Tony Stewart Racing," said Kinser, of Bloomington, Ind., and one of the original Outlaws in 1978. "We were right in the hunt all year. We won some races, but just had a few bumps in the road and that's what ended up costing us the title."

After four consecutive World of Outlaws championships, the competition finally caught up to Schatz last year. However he knows the ground he made up down the stretch combined with his focused effort in Australia during the winter gives him a bit of an edge this week at Volusia Speedway Park, which is just a short drive from Daytona Beach, Fla.

"Last year we didn't adhere to the changes like we needed too and that put us behind a little bit," said Schatz, of Fargo, N.D. "We learned a lot at the end of last year and used Australia as a stepping stone and really figured out the things we needed to get back on top."

A noticeable difference in the Schatz's #15 ride this year will be a completely new look as STP has become his team's primary sponsor.

"We're really excited to be a part of the promotion of STP and hopefully can be as successful for them as we have been for Armor All."

Despite having 2010 seasons that many drivers would be proud of, Schatz and Kinser expect to win races and championships. That's clearly their goal in 2011.

"The bottom line is that we were good for a majority of the season," Kinser said. "If we get back to that level again this year and can eliminate a few of those rough nights, I feel like we'll be right there all year long."

Schatz echoed his teammate's confidence.

"You go out one day at a time and win as much as you can," Schtaz said. "That's where this team deserves to be and where I expect to have them."

The racing action at Volusia kicks off on Tuesday (Feb. 8) with the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars waving the green flag on the season Friday (Feb. 11), Saturday (Feb. 12) and Sunday (Feb. 13).

Joey Saldana Aims to Defend DIRTcar Nationals Sprint Car Title
Kasey Kahne Racing Superstar Also Sets Sights on First World of Outlaws Championship

By Kyle Luetters  / 2010 file photo © Tim Johnson

CONCORD, N.C. - Feb. 3, 2011 - Joey Saldana was one of the hottest drivers in 2010 on the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series national tour. He kicked off the season by winning the DIRTcar Nationals by University of Northwestern Ohio championship and stayed at or near the top of the series standings the entire season.

Now, Saldana and his Kasey Kahne Racing team are gearing up invade Volusia Speedway Park to launch the 2011 World of Outlaws season at the 40 th DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH. His performance in 2010 raises the expectation level, making him an immediate contender to win his - and his car owner's - first World of Outlaws crown. He has 33 victories over the past two seasons, more than any other driver, and last year he also managed the points battle exceptionally well.

"Last year we had a tremendous car all week at the DIRTcar Nationals and my crew did a great job adjusting on it," said Saldana, a native of Brownsburg, Ind., and the son of 1970 Knoxville Nationals champion Joe Saldana.

In addition to history being in his favor, the 1996 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year winner also spent some time this winter "Down Under" honing his skills.

"We went down and ran eight races in Australia," Saldana said. "I felt like we ran very well and was able to build up more momentum."

Racing wasn't the only thing Saldana was up to this off-season. He also began training with Pit Fit, an exercise organization that works with drivers like his car owner, Kasey Kahne, and former Indianapolis 500 champion Scott Dixon. In addition to becoming more fit and strong, Saldana has also focused on making sure there are no lingering effects from a concussion he suffered in a crash last fall at Eldora Speedway.

"I started working with Dynavision to make sure my mind was fully recovered from the accident," said Saldana of the unique training technology.

With Saldana ready for a fast start, fans can also expect to see changes in his #9 KKR machine.

"We were very happy to have been partnered with Budweiser for the past few years," said Saldana of his team's sponsor the past several seasons. "We're looking forward to announcing new sponsorship at the DIRTcar Nationals."

In addition to his ride, Saldana's crew is also one of the best in the business. Willie Kahne was the crew chief in 2009 and '10, beginning this season Kale Kahne will step into that role.

"It's going to be strange not working with Willie this season but we have a great team and I'm sure we'll all get on the same page and be as strong as ever."

Through the changes, Saldana's desire and determination remains intact. The hard-charging driver will once again pilot a Maxim chassis this year. His proven success on the track has helped raise his level of confidence in his car, his team and himself, and he knows he's definitely a championship contender.

"We hope we can win it," he said. "It's all about running as strong as you can and just being there at the end."

Tickets to see Saldana and the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series compete in the 40th DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH at Volusia Speedway Park can be purchased online at http://www.worldofoutlaws.com/tickets or by calling 386-985-4402 . In addition, the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series is expanding its early summer weekend at Knoxville to add a complete show on Friday, June 10, to the previously scheduled race on Saturday, June 11.

Also, all of the action during the Goodyear Knoxville Nationals will be captured in high-definition by the World Racing Group media production team and will air on SPEED in a multi-hour, tape-delayed HD broadcast.

"The timing is right to work with the World of Outlaws," said Knoxville Raceway Director of Racing Ralph Capitani. "The premier 410 racing event and the premier national organization are working together and we're certainly happy about that. We have a long history of running exciting Sprint Car races together. We're looking forward to what the future holds."

The world renown Knoxville Nationals brings together competitors from across the country and around the world for four days of intense competition at the center of Sprint Car racing just outside of Des Moines. The Goodyear Knoxville Nationals' purse of more than $1 million anchors Sprint Car racing's fabled Month of Money and makes it the richest event in the sport, with racers leaving everything on the track for a shot at becoming a legend.

"We are excited to bring the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series back to the Knoxville Nationals," said World Racing Group CEO Brian Carter. "The World of Outlaws and Knoxville Raceway have been synonymous for more than 30 years and we're certainly pleased to be working together with Ralph Capitani and his team to make the 51st Goodyear Knoxville Nationals an even greater event for fans and competitors alike."

Every August the four-day extravaganza envelopes the town of Knoxville with days full of music, food and camping that eventually give way to thrilling nights of wheel-to-wheel racing at breathtaking speeds.
